Unit 334 – Support children and young people health and safety

1.1
When planning an indoor lesson you need to take into account various health and safety factors. These will be that the room you will be taking the lesson in has enough space for the amount of students in the lesson. Students and staff should be able to move around the room without causing any problems for others and be able to locate all necessary materials and any equipment that is needed for the lesson. The lighting in the room needs to be enough that in all areas of the room students have adequate light to access the lesson. I also need to take into account any persons who may have a medical or physical need, are they able to move around the room safely, do they need to be sat in a certain area or do they need a different style of chair.
When doing an outdoor activity I need to make sure that the environment is appropriate for the activity is safe and secure for all participating. This has to be suitable and accessible for students who have a disability or impairment.
I will assess all the risks through a risk assessment, which identifies risks and how I can managed them risks. Risk assessments are done all the time and these need to recorded and reported.
1.2
Health and safety is implemented by schools based on the current legislation. These are identified and enforced through risk assessment which identifies the risk and the action that is taken to manage this risk. These risk assessment cover everything from the monitoring of food cooked for lunch, as some children may be allergic to certain products. Risks assessments are also done in the class to see if it is appropriate for the number of student using the class. When there are volunteers working in school they need to be supervised and not be left alone with students as this can put the volunteer at risk as they may not know how to deal with certain issues.
