Trip to California
TRIP TO CALIFORNIA

Upon preparing to write this paper, many events came to mind. The event that stood out the most was the family vacation we took to California during the hot summer month of July, 2006. Excitement, anticipation, and curiosity filled the two years it took to plan this trip. The elements that made this experience so especial were; the anticipation and planning, the wonderful adventure we faced, and the impact it had on me and my family.

It was a trip that we went on with my sister and her family, which would be our first trip together. The night the trip was booked, I continuously paced the floor looking out of my bedroom window to see if my husband was home from work yet. Since he was working out of town, I did not have the chance to tell him about the trip. As he drove up our driveway, I ran outside to tell him the good news. I said “Carlos, guess where we are going in July!” before he could even reply, I yelled out, “California!”

It seemed like forever before we would finally be on our way, but before we knew it we were on the plane listening to the flight attendant announcing “fasten your seatbelts please and prepare for landing into Los Angeles International Airport.”

We were embarking on an amazing journey, with some of the biggest thrill rides the world has ever known. After showing everyone’s passports and identification at customs, the reality finally hit me. I was making my first visit to California and my second trip out of the country. As we approached California, I began to get butterflies, as if I was starting my first day of school. My first impression of the city was very busy, modern and my eyes were drawn to The Hilton Hotel where we were staying for the week. When we entered the hotel, I noticed the luxurious entrance that was surrounded by a colourful garden, which also leads to an even more elaborate hotel.

After a very delicious breakfast the next morning, we were ready

My heart sank to my stomach, as I hated to fly on planes. I couldn’t even fathom the thought that I was stuck on this plane forever. I rubbed my hand along the smooth armrest and gripped the end as tightly as I could, hoping this was all a dream. Unfortunately, it was not.…

The thick tree lines and vast open fields bring a sense of freedom and grandeur. The brilliant light shining like beacon of hope with the soft calming breeze flowing across the field is refreshing and pure like a baby after a warm bath. The air seems to be free and clear of the city’s poisonous air pollution and the soft sounds of birds makes it all too refreshing, like a beautiful day on the beach. With quiet clean monuments and buildings dancing across the landscape, the look of peace and quiet seems to be present at last. As the blue crisp skies begin to darken across the brilliant blue pond, the shimmering light hitting the trees is as beautiful as the sun setting on the Catalina Island on a bright blue day with soft clouds flowing across the sky. I have the taste of fresh fruit on my tongue in my mouth as I take a long deep breath, and realize how much the soft green grass adds to the peacefulness in the park. I can hear the cheerful wildlife scampering beyond the tree line, like young children frolicking in their mother’s front yard. As the quiet darkness sets in, and with the city brilliant lights in the background, the serene park makes the bustling city seem peaceful once…

For this project, I decided to go to San Juan Capistrano to do my observation. San Juan Capistrano is a small town located in Orange County, two hour north of where I live. It’s also my boyfriend Colin’s hometown. Going to San Juan was a random and hasty decision because I didn’t have any real connection to or interest in the town and, in fact, I hadn’t even known that it existed two months ago. Colin convinced me that San Juan would be perfect to write about because I would get to see things that I didn’t normally see in Los Angeles. I trusted him, so we agreed that I would tag along the next morning when he would be driving home for Mother’s Day weekend.…

It was not like they said it would be. Taking a cold shower from a pipe coming out of the basement wall of a seventy-five-year-old school was not fun. They said this would be the best week of my summer. Until I began writing this essay, I had never thought about the impact my experiences on Appalachian Service Project mission trips had contributed to my transition from childhood to adulthood. However, now I realize that not only was I affecting other people’s lives, but the work I was doing was also changing me. That was the best week of my summer, and so have the two following trips been that I have taken.…

After Amber’s wedding, Emmett and I decided to take some time off of work and return to Bora Bora. We spent more than a month revisiting all of the tourist destinations we had once visited years prior. I was so surprised to see all of the changes to our favorite spots. It made me think about how much I have changed in all these years. I had been given a wonderful man, three beautiful blessings, and my dream. It felt like everything had been fit into place over all of these…

At face value, the poem depicts the American journey which takes them all the way to California's shores, which is as far west as they can go. On a deeper level, the poem depicts the human lifespan. I, a child, very old...the circle almost circled (Whitman 3-4). Line three and four invite readers to take a look at the speaker's life: I, a child, very old meaning the speaker was once a child, but now he is an old man looking back at his life. The circle almost circled meaning that his time in this world is almost over. Line five to line eight meticulously explained how we, the human race, have been wandered everywhere, done everything, trying to give a meaning to our life. The speaker uses metaphors to point out a question that forever remained…

“Passengers flying Flight QF563, your gate is now open for boarding”, I peacefully sipped what remained of my coffee and waited for Joshua to finish his bacon and egg roll. Shortly after, we began to make our way to our designated gate. The smell of low-priced takeout food filled the air and couldn’t help, but leave me feeling overly excited. My son and I navigated our way through the clustered crowds of other keen travellers, following the signs above our heads as well as the announcements that were played through the speakers at the airport.…

Then the city was a small town with very little infrastructure and little employment opportunities. There were no resorts, spas, or beach activities. Yet as I grew up so did the city, I got to witness a town become a city, and it watched me transition from a kid to a young adult. Through this unique relationship I became more optimistic about the future. Like a plant that needs nourishment to grow a town needs money. I saw a town go from a little population to a big one, saw dirt roads become asphalt highways, saw turmoil and destruction become success. All through the power of tourism. As the city grew to new success I followed suite. I set about to understand and comprehend the world we live in. As I matured and grew much like Puerto Penasco my worldly perspective changed from a naïve child to and optimistic…

One of the most memorable moments I have experienced was four years ago, when I traveled from Matamoros, Tamaulipas to San Antonio, Texas. I had the opportunity of visiting San Antonio for the first time, and more importantly, of spending time with my family who I had not seen in years prior to the trip. Spending time with my family is of great value and importance to me, so I became utterly excited to see them as soon as I had the chance.…

We took this trip during summer break. My wife and I decided this trip so all of our family can go together. My father in law and I were taking turns driving it took us about 12 hours to get to Louisiana. The ride was very exhausting for everybodyI had gotten tired so my father in law took the wheel. My wife woke me up as soon as we got to the bridge; to cross to Louisiana I was so excited to see the water and all the trees that she had told me about. It was a scorching summer day in Las Vegas and my dad and I were meandering around the city in awe of the size of everything. We were acutely aware that we had overdressed for the weather, having just left a chilly Illinois. It was the hottest place to which I had ever been. The both of us, father and son, were going to meet up with my grandpa to go to the Grand Canyon for one of the greatest trips ever. We were going white water rafting on the Colorado River for eight days.…

One warm summer day my family was frantically rushing to gather all our belongings for a week long adventure out west. We were trying our best to squeeze every item in the car; finally we were ready to depart from home. I was just fourteen years of age at the time and had never been more than a few states away. The ride there was beyond exciting, but extra long. I believe most of that was due to the anticipation of when we would finally reach the great state of Colorado.…
