Isolation is a feeling that many of us don’t think about much anymore, now that connecting with people is as easy as a
touch of a button on our phones and computers. It can arise from many situations and is portrayed in numerous different
ways. The causes of isolation in particular are highlighted in the play Othello, the book Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close
and the films The Social Network and Unbroken. Loss is a common factor that leads to isolation in all four texts, as well as
having a single-minded focus on something. Characters in all four texts deal with isolation in different ways which shows
the many repercussions that arise from being solitary. Many effective conventions are used to convey this, symbolism

The Social Network displays the better way to cope with
isolation, namely recognising it and making a change where it is needed. Othello shows how someone can become
completely consumed by jealousy and are unable to see past it. The negative consequences are shown by the fates of
Othello and Iago, who are both too blinded by their fixation they can’t see the impact their actions are going to have.
The Social Network (directed by David Fincher) tells the story of Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook. Mark’s
friendship with Eduardo Savarin, who helps fund his efforts to create Facebook, is central to the storyline and it’s
deterioration leads to Mark being left without people who genuinely care about him. Mark is never physically alone which
shows how you can be surrounded by people or be connected yet still feel isolated as he doesn’t know how to relate to
other people. This is emphasized by a conversation with his lawyer where she tells him “You’re not an asshole Mark.
You’re just trying so hard to be”. The film reiterates the idea that you don’t have to be alone to feel isolated, which
