Abstract

The following passage is a recollection of events from a sniper incident that happened on 3 March 2007. I was assigned to D Co 1-8 cav, and we were located in Northern Baghdad. I will go over the sequence of events, also the outcome of the situation. I will also go over the lessons learned from what transpired that day. I will conclude the Passage with a brief description of all that was gone over in the PEM.

Introduction
The Worst Day of My Life My name is John Webb, I am going to try to explain the worst experience, I think a person in this world should have to deal with. In the early morning of March 3, 2007 in Northern Baghdad, Iraq, This would be the day that I would have to watch my friend die.
Description of events
It all started about 0600 that morning waking up in the crusty old cement barracks of FOB(Forward Operating Base) Rhustuimia (pronounced Rust-a-mia). I roll out of my bunk bed that looks like it was made in the 1980’s barely standing, only for my TV and my chair underneath keeping it up. I climb into my boots and uniform still sweaty and stinky from the night before, and make my way outside to my o’l trusty M1151 waiting for me. I realize that today is going to be an exceedingly hot day because the sun is barley cresting the horizon and the temperature is well over One Hundred degrees, sweat already beading down my forehead and down my back. Good thing I got the A/C fixed the previous week

This was the first assault bridge crossing conducted in the face of the enemy since World War II. The division secured the eastern half of Baghdad in six days with a total of 76 casualties, four KIA and 72 WIA. The division’s fire discipline and judicious use of supporting arms in this densely populated area avoided a potentially catastrophic toll among the civilian population and minimized collateral damage. During the fight for Baghdad, the division seized key facilities, including the Rasheed Military Complex, the Atomic Energy Commission, the Baghdad University, Tariq Aziz’s residence, the Ministry of Defense Complex, the Fedeyeen Headquarters, and the Directorate for General Security (DGS) Headquarters. Division Marines displayed noteworthy valor in this mission, incurring one KIA and 22 WIA (Kennedy et al., 2006, p. 2).…

Mr. Lederer and Mr. Burdick wrote the Ugly American many decades ago and it is a story that holds many truths of how we act and operate in today’s society. This fictional work displayed characters that truly understood many of the Special Operation Forces (SOF) imperatives. Louis Krupitzyn, John Colvin and Major Wolchek represented the SOF imperatives of understanding the operational environment, anticipating and controlling psychological effects, operating with and through others, considering the long term effects, facilitating interagency activities, and engaging the threat discriminately. I will combine my own experiences and those of these three characters in The Ugly American. I will demonstrate how the SOF imperatives influenced their behavior and how I approached situations during my time in Special Forces.…

The harsh terrain in the area of modern Iran made it very difficult for humans to survive and find water sources. The arid climate meant more work for agriculture and agricultural surplus was very rare. Organizing the building of underground irrigation channels for agriculture required a strong central government. The connection between royal authority and prosperity can be seen in the ideology of the first Persian Empire. (p. 100, 102).…

Liam O’Flaherty’s splendid short story, “The Sniper”, demonstrated superb suspense throughout the entire story. Several different lively, tension-filled moments riddled this story. First off, in the beginning, the sniper is laying in his covert hideout with his rifle. He decides to light his cigarette because he fancies a smoke. The light gives his position away and the soldier is shot at from an enemy sniper. In this moment Liam, the author, creates a nervous tension in the audience because the intelligent readers know it’s a bad idea. It’s obvious that the not-so-sneaky sniper would reveal his furtive position, thus becoming a target and receiving enemy fire. Consequently, these unfortunate events happen. It was 115 degrees; the platoon was walking through the middle of the desert each of them with 40 pounds of gear on and an M16A2 rifle. It was summer time in the country of Afghanistan and the temperature was rising. At this point I asked myself what the hell I am doing here and why did I join the United States Army? Right when I was thinking that I felt a tug on my leg and there stood a young boy about 7 years old with only one arm, “Candy,Candy” he asked. Upon speaking with the local villagers we found out that his arm was taken from an improvised explosive device (IED) planted there by the rebeles that wanted to “rid their country of the weak”. That is when it occurred to me that I was here to protect my country from those that think that we are weak.…

Another way the author conveys the circumstances of war on a personal level is by communicating the psychological effects. He says, “…But his eyes had the cold gleam of the fanatic.” This shows how the sniper is excited about killing people and possibly dying in the process. That is not normal, so there is some sort of psychological damage. The author also states, “He began to gibber to…

“Be quiet Private Smith”, said Commander Johnson in a hushed tone. “Sir, I’m almost positive I heard footsteps coming our way, Sir!”, Private Smith hissed back. Smith has barely moved his already tense muscles from lying in the same back breaking position for hours. Aimed his semi automatic rifle towards the incoming sound. Even though it was pitch black with the occasional fire of a gunshot in the distance too far to be close by them. He was certain he had heard the slight tap of shoes across the pavement. “Private Smith, stand down. Private!” Barked the Commander, but it was already too late, the enemy was headed straight towards them, gun raised and pointed directly at his heart, and all Private Smith could think of was either pull the…

War, a ferocious fight between man that not only physically but mentally damages everyone. Men who have families, wives , kids are lucky enough to go back home with all their limbs and wit to them . It was said to be the war to end all wars, THE GREAT WAR OF WORLD but there was nothing great about it . I was a young man at the time of my enlistment into the army and had to leave my little town of Clarksville ,Tennessee . I hugged my mother and father like it was the last time I would ever see them. I remember the ride to the shipping port where I would be shipped off the Europe it was a mixture of the excitement of seeing new places and serving my country and the fear of not coming back to see the ones I love . I could hear soldiers wearing a green hat yell “Hurry the fuck up, let’s go!" "What the hell is taking you so long!?" All the while I was carry two green duffel bags filled with fifty pounds each of my military uniforms. In that moment I felt, as though I had super hero power strength. I couldn’t feel the weight of my bags, and waddled my way up to my bed, which was on the third floor of the building. My assigned drill sergeant, Hernandez for third platoon, looked at me with disgust by how my hair was all over the place, and said "Get your fucking life together." I was terrified, my heart felt like it was racing of 100 mph. I placed my stuff on the ground, and she explained that there was more gear that I needed. I thought to myself what else do I need; my duffel bags are over capacity with what I was given. The following week she handed out third platoon's gear which contained more uniforms, a gas mask, tactical body gear, a helmet, and a sleeping bag.…

Today was possibly the worst day in my entire life. I shall start from the beginning. When I woke up I felt an uncontrollable need for freedom. I had the bad feeling in the bottom of my stomach and I couldn't get rid of it. I felt terrified, captured. I sneaked out of the house and ran. I ran from myself, from the thoughts in my head. I needed to clear my mind. It felt like a huge and terribly real nightmare. An endless nightmare. I ran and prayed for all of this to be over.…
