The use of reproductive cloning as infertility treatment
Infertility is the fundamental lacking of the ability to conceive a baby, and both men and women can have this problem. Dr. Clark, our guest speaker in class pointed out that approximately 30% of men and women are infertile, while 25% of infertility cannot be explain by science yet. Because of that, infertility is no longer considered as a lifestyle problem but a disease instead. According to Dr. Clark, one of the options for the infertility patients today is the use of stem cell therapies to treat infertility, and one of the recent popular stem cell therapies is reproductive cloning. Reproduction cloning is a process to “produce” a next generation of “you” through somatic cell nuclear transfer. In my paper, I will argue that reproductive cloning is morally permissible because of its similarity to in-vitro fertilization. After that I will offer a counter argument suggest that it’s better to utilize limited amount of oocytes on a group of sickness rather than infertile people. I think reproductive cloning is morally permissible because reproductive cloning brings embryo into existence which is similar to in vitro fertilization(IVF), and I will explain in detail in the following paragraph why they are similar. Therefore, if IVF is morally permissible, reproductive cloning is undoubtedly morally permissible too. Let me first start with why IVF is morally permissible. IVF is a prominent infertility treatment which brings the embryo into existence by fertilize an egg with sperm outside the body in-vitro. The sperm and egg used in IVF usually come from the infertile couple, or either a sperm or egg donor. After fertilization, the egg is implanted into the mother’s uterus and develop into a fetus. I will say IVF is an important treatment because it allows women to develop a close kinship relationship with the embryo when she is going through the ten- month pregnancy.
