Introducing the Illustrator It’s easy to tell a story with words - in fact, people do it on a daily basis. When you restrict the definition of story-telling to being only captivating stories, you reduce the number of people who can tell one. Now require that the captivating story have amazing illustrations to go along with it and you’ve narrowed the author pool down to a handful of people, with David Wiesner among them - as evidenced by his Caldecott Medal book The Three Pigs (2001). Wiesner takes it a step further, though, winning Caldecott Honor Medals with Free Fall (1988) and Sector 7 (1999) and Caldecott Medals with Tuesday (1991) and Flotsam (2006) - each one with only pictures and no words

According to the copyright pages, Flotsam, Sector 7, and Hurricane were all “executed in watercolor.” The materials are not noted in Free Fall, but the similarities to the previously mentioned tiles indicate that it was also painted with watercolors. Wiesner used a wider variety of materials in The Three Pigs, including watercolor, gouache, colored inks, pencil, and colored pencil, and in Art & Max (2010), using acrylic, pastel, watercolor, and India ink.
