The Running Dream
The Real Rosa In the book The Running Dream by Wendelin Van Draanen, the main character Jessica is trying to adjust to a new life without one of her legs. Another character, Rosa, helps her through this while facing a disability of her own. Rosa was born with cerebral palsy. Even though some people don’t take the time to really get to know her, she has some great qualities that should make people want to. In the book, Rosa gets those close to her to see her real self instead of just seeing her as the girl in the wheelchair that has trouble talking. She manages this through using some of her best qualities: her friendliness, joy in helping others, and optimism. Even when others are not friendly to her, Rosa seems to be friendly to them. The book really shows this first hand through her notes to Jessica, and the time she takes to tutors others in her math class. When Jessica is in a wheelchair, and asked to sit in the back of the room with Rosa, Rosa was open and friendly to her. Her notes help Jessica through the mental portion of her rehabilitation whether they were questions, quotes, girl talk, or just words that made her think. Rosa’s notes have such an effect on Jessica that she saves them because she can’t seem to bear to throw them away. For example, in one note conversation they have, Jessica brings up her concerns about how the running leg might just be a pipe dream. Rosa then passes her a note that reads, “So was walking.” In The Running Dream, Rosa tutors two of her classmates. First, she tutors her new friend Jessica, then a boy in their class after Jessica encourages him to ask her for help. Jessica even gets the highest math test score she has ever gotten! Over all, Rosa’s friendliness and openness to others may have been her best trait. Rosa’s joy in helping others helps her connect to others at her school. This mainly happens with her tutoring. In the book, when Jessica is sitting in the back of the math class with her, Rosa realizes that

Throughout the novel of ‘The running man’ the theme ‘things are not always what they seem’ is a consistent idea in the text. Michael Gerard Bauer’s narrative is a story of the value of perception as characters are constantly being mis-judged. Like Mrs. Mossop, josephs ‘nosey’ neighbour, the ‘dangerous, sick man’ known as Tom Layton and The Running Man who is described as the ‘stuff from nightmares’.…

Rosa had to undergo most of her journey on her own without the help or support of anyone since she had migrated to America and really had nothing to begin with. As for Luna she was a citizen she had more then Rosa ever had in the beginning even if it wasn’t much Luna had somewhere to fall back in case things didn’t go the right way. The other difference was even though Rosa accomplished what she wanted for herself it was just a victory for herself rather than Luna that as she accomplished her dream she helped pave the way for other women to do the same and helped and motivated women like her to become more involved and accepted in a political…

Rosa was always a tough, strong-minded woman. That is another reason why I admire her. At a young age, her parents got divorced and they were forced to move in with her grandparents. For financial reasons. She attended school all the way through 11th grade, when she had to drop out. She had to set aside her school duties because she had to attend to her sick grandmother and mother. I envied her because I never had the opportunity to go to school. Well not really anyways, I had to at an early age of 10 to help my parents out with the farm.…

The comment one of the men made toward Rosaleen was cruel because at the end he made a racial slur towards her. The reason why he did this was that he felt that Rosaleen was inferior since she was of color. After the racist comment was made Lily told Rosaleen not to ignore them and keep going. Lily showing concern for Rosaleen contributes to the overall theme because Lily views Rosaleen as more than just a color. She views her as a part of her family and doesn't let anything stop it.…

Attending school at a nunnery, Rosa 's female friends rarely have any contact with men. Through her betrothal to Edwin Drood, Rosa is the only woman within the nunnery that has a man to court her. She is the only woman mentioned, in the nunnery, that is going to be married off to a man, not God. Rosa capitalizes on this situation by leading the other girls in the nunnery to be her "poor pets"(118). She realizes that the girls as well as the head of the school, Miss Twinkleton, who describes Rosa as her "pet pupil"(14), look at her to be the embodiment of romance because of her prospective marriage. Miss Twinkleton and the girls live their love lives through Rosa, "over her shoulder"(51). Rosa feeds into the situation by making sure that the girls are watching her and letting Edwin know that they "must get married . . . the poor girls would be so dreadfully disappointed" (17). She uses her power over Edwin, which is given through love and devotion to her and both of their parent 's wishes for them to be married, as a way to stay in control at the nunnery.…

    Allegory of Fortune

For such a beautiful piece with such soft lighting and rich color, Salvator Rosa’s Allegory of Fortune hardly seems like something created out of anger. A beautiful woman, wrapped in a golden cloth is shown feeding an assortment of animals. There is little in the painting that evokes the sort of emotion in the viewer that Rosa put into the painting; only after applying knowledge of symbolism does the viewer see Rosa’s angry, shaking fist.…

    The Stolen Party

Rosaura is the main character of this writing. The story revolves around her from start to finish. Rosaura is an inexperienced young girl. This story opens with an argument between Rosaura and her mother. Rosaura wants to go to Luciana's birthday party. Luciana is in a wealthy family so Rosaura's mother disapproves of her daughter's attending the party. In the first few sentences the author makes it evident that Rosaura is financially challenged. Rosaura's mother says, "I don't like you going because it is a rich peoples party." This one sentence already tells me that they are probably not very wealthy. In addition Rosaura is an inexperienced young girl. She is not tarnished by the belief that everyone should be judged according to his or her financial worth. She, unlike her mother, judges people by who they are and not by how much money they have. When Rosaura's mother states, "you should not fart higher than your own ass" she shows that she feels below those who are wealthy. Rosaura's argument shows that she does not feel bound by her financial status. Her financial state isn't even an issue to her. She says that she wants to go because she is a friend of Luciana and because she was invited. The author also demonstrates Rosaura's openness in the first few paragraphs of the story. Since Rosaura is only nine years old she has no prior experience of prejudice. She does not realize that her mother might be right about her assumption that not everyone will accept her at the party and treat her with the same respect.…

In my personal opinion she should of had rights over a man that hadn’t had as hard of a day working standing up as much as Rosa did. I think this because man should have respect for any woman working throughout the day standing up.The fact that she got imprisoned for not giving her seat to a more younger man makes me feel mad with what the society was like, at the same time i am glad that as the people of today we’ve developed our equal ways towards one another. After a long day “The only tired I was, was tired of giving in.” It makes me change the way i think about discrimination when she keeps fighting and not…

    Born to Run

We may be technologically advanced, but are we really “advanced”? The Tarahumara are a group of Native American people who are well known for running long-distances in sandals or barefoot and their amazing endurance. They tend to practice a traditional lifestyle, living in natural shelters. The problem with Americans, as explained by McDougall in Born to Run, “Everyone thinks they know how to run, but it’s really as nuanced as any other activity” (McDougall 202). Most people believe they just run the way they run which is absolutely ridiculous! That’s a big problem with American’s; we believe that whatever we do is right. We would rather just execute whatever comes to us and believe that it’s the right way to do it, then practice and actually learn the correct way. Running over 20 miles a day seems like nothing to the Tarahumara people, but to American’s it seems nearly impossible. The Tarahumara hunted deer by chasing them, while we would just whip out a bow and arrow because it was “easier”. We seem to always be taking the easy route.…

You see what he made me was a monster or what he would call it the new breed of humans’ Hydro sapiens witch is bender of water.
