Each character has qualities, which helped build this friendship. The many qualities they present as individuals allow them to out smart and allude the police. Thought the book strangers become friends and accomplish tasks that the average dumpsite boy couldn’t dream of. It all starts when Raphael and Gardo discuss the idea of approaching rat in according to hide the bag. Gardo goes on to say “We need your help…” rat when on to say “That’s Ok” Raphael and Gardo were shocked (Mulligan, 2011, pg.26). They couldn’t believe rat was so quick and calm with a response to help the boys hide the bag that could end them in endless amounts of trouble if they were to be caught concealing it from the local police. When reading this passage I was stuck by rat’s selflessness to people he barely knew. He was willing to risk his safety to protect his newfound friends. Typically you see this kind of selflessness in a friendship that has grown over years. This is an overlapping quality throughout the book. In the climax of the book the starts out with a twist; As most people know friendships grow and form over time. Raphael was in the prison fighting for his life “I didn’t find a bag, sir!” by this time through the interrogation Raphael was experiencing physical abuse and was still repeating to the police that “I didn’t find a bag, sir!”

When you get into a corner you say “Hey, look, a puppy!” – Although this sounds a bit silly, it is a great lesson when you are in a board room or in a meeting and backed into a corner with nowhere to go. You simply change the subject to release the tension and focus on something else that will possibly lead to some solutions instead of going down the same path over and over. When Michael was in the meeting at Souverain to try and get some of Mark Lyons money back from money they owed him for his 1984 crop and realized that this winery had absolutely no money to give him, he changed the subject by asking about the silver locomotive he had been staring at through the window. While this lightened the high strung tension in the room it also opened up another conversation and gave Michael an idea of how to get Mark’s money back. He would take what he found out was wine in those silver locomotives, bottle and sell it.…

Pipe music is usually associated with the story of the Pied Piper, which is what we later discover Der Rattenfanger expresses. As Faith reads the title of Der Rattenfanger Eva asks her ‘Mutti’ the question of what an abyss is, this is significant in regards to describing the character of The Ratcatcher, an abyss is usually associated with separation and loss, both of which The Ratcatcher personifies. That he is mentioned with association to an abyss foreshadows what is to happen with Eva and the relationship that she currently shares with her ‘Mutti’.…
