The Jewelry Maupassant
In the Guy De Maupassant's ‘The Jewelry', a short story that anyone by just reading the title would think that it's simply about a piece of jewelry. But it is not what the title seems, it's about a man, M. Lantin, who found the love of his life and how he found out what he thought his wife did behind his back. The story only shows the M. Lantin's side of the story, a man's point of view, but it lacks Lady Lantin's side of the story. Just by reading the story, Guy De Maupassant only wrote what M. Lantin saw and felt, but he never mentioned what Lady Lantin thought of her husband or her new marriage life. And in the end, after her death, as she had no chance of defending herself, she was accused of committing adultery. But a couple of expensive

“The Necklace” Maupassant focuses on femininity. He develops a character as a woman who possesses all the attributes needed to be desirable by other men. “She had no dresses, no jewelry, nothing. And she loved nothing else; she felt herself made for that only. She would so much have liked to please, to be envied, to be seductive and sought after (as cited in Clugston, 2011, para.6).” She’s in a marriage where she does not care for her husband and hates the house in which she resides. Because she is a…

Through the story, Maupassant emphasizes the theme of illusions versus reality by adequately revealing the true immoral nature of the nobles, while they impersonate themselves as honorable to the common people. The theme of “Boule de Suif” is thoroughly similar to “Jewelry”, where the author exposes the deceptive nature of humans through symbolizing jewelry. In “Jewelry”, Mr. Lantin finds discovers his wife’s jewelry to be exceedingly valuable, while until Madame Lantin’s death, he was under the impression that all her jewelry are imitations. In this case, He falsely believed the jewelry to be fake until he discovered the truth much later. The beauty of Maupassant’s writings is in his ability to surprise readers with his ironic and unexpected endings. In both stories, Maupassant merely uses the characters and elements in the plot in order to convey a much more significant…

The necklace by Guy Maupassant is a story about a woman who was pretty and charming but she married poor. She wasn’t satisfied with her life and always wanted to live like the rich. Her husband did all he could to keep her happy. One day he brought home an invitation to attend a ball hoping this will delight his wife since she like to be fancy and rich. However his wife almost turned down the invitation because she didn’t have anything to wear. He was able to get her new clothing for the ball and to finish her outfit she borrowed a diamond necklace from a friend to wear to the ball. They had a great time at the ball however she lost the diamond necklace. She and her husband had to work hard and spend all their life savings to replace the necklace. At the end of the story, the woman ran into her friend she borrowed the necklace from and learned that it was a fake necklace instead of real diamonds. This is a very entertaining story and the writer was able to make the readers understand the deep and hidden meaning of events and because of that I agree that Maupassant ultimate goal is achieved through symbolism.…

Many people were jealous of Antoinette and Louis’ marriage, including the King’s brother and cousin who thought Louis incapable of being a proper King, and were extremely jealous of his beautiful wife. Fabricated stories, including the Diamond Necklace Affair, circulated throughout France, mostly including Marie Antoinette’s private life and her supposed sexual acts with the men and women of the court. She was accused of sending funds to Austria and the French even challenged the paternity of the royal children. The Diamond Necklace Affair captured the entire nation’s attention since it questioned the morals of the French Queen. Lamotte was a beautiful woman, captivating to everyone, that convinced Prince de Rohan, the Cardinal of France, that Marie Antoinette was interested in obtaining a fabulously expensive diamond necklace made by Louis XV’s lover, Madame du Barry. Claiming she was the lesbian lover of Antoinette, Rohan obeyed Lamotte and went to Boehmer, the Queen’s jeweler to buy the diamond necklace. The charade unraveled when Boehmer went to Marie to collect the money needed to pay for the necklace and she refused. The King and Queen were shocked that Rohan actually believed such a flimsy story, and enraged that he went along with it. Though none of the accusations were true, the story circulated through Europe for many years after and the Queen’s reputations was damaged severely. After the accusations finally seceded, Marie was able to return to the life she was used to, being a devoted mother and wife. Sadly, at the same time her life regained normality, the state of France was in an uproar over their country’s financial issues. The poor were starving and Marie Antoinette’s small contributions to helping them were almost a lost cause. When told of the peasants and their…

Monsieur Latin, a man who only made three thousand five hundred francs a year, fell in love with a young girl who seemed to be a very virtuous woman, one that "every sensible young man dreams of one day intrusting his happiness" (1). Once they were married Monsieur Latin's wife "governed his household with such clever economy that they seemed to live in luxury" (1). This quote gives us a hint of what exactly Monsieur Latin's wife was doing behind closed doors or in this case at the theatre. Even though they seemed to have a picture perfect marriage - it wasn't at all. Monsieur Latin's wife actually having an affair. In "The False Gems" Maupassant uses the theme of the story to show us that ignorance is bliss. By using the ironies in the story he gives a cynical statement of the superiority of false happiness versus real unhappiness.…

The story of the Jewelry gives me lots of things to think about. When I first read the title I totally have the impression that it will be about passion and indulgence into temporal or material things like wealth and luxuries. I thought I was right because the protagonist’s wife, Mrs. Lantin has a passion in jewelries, however it was mentioned during the first part of the story that her jewelries are fake. So that somewhat gave me an interest to read the story more and further find out what will happen until the end of the story. The narrator tells the story as a 3rd person. He described the characters very well. His definition of the characters provides a good description of what kind of person’s the characters are.…
