The Analects of Confucius
The Analects of Confucius, a collection of sayings and ideas of Confucianism, was compiledby the followers of Confucius mostly in the form of dialogues. The last chapter, “[Emperor] Yao Said,” is the briefest chapter in the book. One school of thought holds that it is just a collection of leftovers. I come from the school of thought that the last chapter concludes Confucius’s theme of politics as well as philosophy with an inseparable connection with the other chapters in the analects. Politics was Confucius’s prime concern. Listed with examples of emperors, 20.1 talked about how to be a successful philosophical king. People, food, mourning, and sacrifice were all the elements important to the rule of a country. Generosity, good faith, industriousness, and justice were the dispositions of a king, which Confucius praised highly. All those similar ideas ran through the entire book. 1.5 and 12.9 emphasized how important it was to love people in order to govern a state. 3.12 and 3.17 talked about how necessary it was to hold a sacrificial ceremony carefully. In 17.6, the five practices that would implement humanity, which was the core of Confucianism, were courtesy, tolerance, good faith, diligence, and generosity. These political ideas have a tight relationship with each other within the 20 chapters around the theme of politics: benevolent politics. Under the rule of the king, competent officials were necessary to govern the state together. Mentioned in 20.2, cultivating the five treasures while eschewing the four evils was the key to become a capable official. In my opinion, the five treasures were actually the details, the steps of governing a state. Firstly, all constructions should be under a plan, which was beneficial to people. Then, people would work hard for the goals that they were willing to achieve. Once the state became a prosperous state, no one would be rapacious. If the officials were amiable, then all the citizens would lived in a state full

    In this particular analect, I believe Confucius is talking about the government. Confucius's writings suggest that a ruler should govern with a straightforward style that consist of principles of goodness and morality. For example, in II (1), he says "he who rules by moral force is like the pole-star, which remains in its place while all the lesser stars do homage to it." In this I believe he is referring to the north star in the sky, which is always constant and never moving. If you rule with good morals, your place will never move and people will always respect you. Another example is in II (3), I believe Confucius is saying that a ruler must not rule by regulations and punishment but by virtue and graciousness. By this kind of rule, they will learn their own feeling of shame and they will be able to correct themselves. In II (20), Chi K'ang-tzu asks how can I make the common people respectful and loyal? Confucius answers by saying that we should approach them with dignity, so they will be reverent to you. Be kind and compassionate and they will be loyal. Lastly, he says promote those who are able and teach those who are unskilled, and they will work positively for you. Finally, in II (21), someone asks Confucius how come he's not in the government , if he has such good advice. He responds by saying by doing good to your society, you are also in turn doing government. In light of Confucius' teachings, I believe he is right.     At the center of this argument is the belief that Confucius simply presented himself as a reactionary in order to mask his revolutionary ideology. This argument has traction as inside of the system of government that Confucius wanted to take from the Zhou, he made some changes. There is some evidence to suggest that Confucius had revolutionary ideas intertwined with his reactionary ideas. The first example was how Confucius redefined virtue in his society. In order to do this, it is important to talk about the importance of virtue in the Western Zhou system of government. According to the Mandate of Heaven, the legitimacy of a king and a ruling family is their virtue to the extent that if another family becomes more virtuous it is their right to overthrow the previous king and family. Both Confucius and the Western Zhou thought the Mandate of Heaven was important but they differ on what defines virtue. In the Western Zhou Dynasty, virtue signified being powerful on the battlefield. While Confucius saw virtue as having humanity which was when a person acted with “reverence, generosity, truthfulness, diligence and kindness” (19). It is certainly curious that in mirroring the government structure of the Western Zhou, Confucius made a crucial change to the definition of what gave the government legitimacy. This argument is further strengthened when considering the role of nobles and ministers in the Western Zhou Government. In the Western Zhou Dynasty, nobles generally served as ministers over fiefs and other areas and this power was passed through mostly hereditary links. Confucius, on the other hand, opened up being a nobleman and a minister to all people as a result of two factors.
