After reading the article “Reading and Writing in College” by Kim Flachmann, I completely agree with Flachmann’s argument on the importance of reading and writing skills for college students along with those who are in the work force. In the article, Flachmann expresses the value of reading and writing skills by writing that they are “necessary for surviving both in college and on the job” (Flachmann, 2014). My agreement with Flachmann’s argument is based on the activities that a college student and a worker face on a daily basis since they revolve around those skills. For a college student, these skills are essential in order to get through college. When it comes to the reading and writing skills, a college student is expected to not only…
Reading and writing are essential skills in modern life. This is a huge problem we have here in the United States because “according to a study that was conducted by the Department of Education, 32 million adults in the United States cannot read, that is almost 14 percent of the population, in addition another 21 percent of the people can only read below a 5th grade level, and also 19 percent of high school graduates cannot read.” This rate have not changed in the past 10 years and that is unacceptable because there are so many opportunities that we can take advantage of and we do not just because we tell ourselves “I do not need this”, which is not true, we need as much education as we can so we can have a better society. In addition to this the article also mention that, “The link between academic failure and delinquency, violence and crime is welded to reading failure” Many people think because they do not know how to read or write that gives them an excuse to commit different crimes but that is not true, you can better yourself if you really want…

Writing gives us a way to study our past, record the present, and discover the future. Without it I feel that we would not have been able to achieve close to what we have so far. As professor Heckathorn states, "writing is an action, an event, a performance." Writing is a form of permanent communication. The reader is grasping the original ideas of the author as apposed to a regurgitated version. Not only this but there are no interruptions in the flow of thought. Conversation or argumentation for example, can have many conflicting and confusing points of view often arriving at no conclusion. Writing allows the reader to comprehend the authors train of thought from beginning to end.…

Reading: somewhere, somehow it is all around us. Everyone learned to read through different methods and sources. As I grew up, education was not a question. I was taught to focus on school and everything else would fall into place. I knew that I would attend college and be given the opportunity to have a great education. However, other people are less fortunate than I have been. Minorities and people living in poverty cannot afford to read books and expand their knowledge. This hurts them as they age and causes them to fall behind in school. Literacy is very important to our culture, as it affects how our country is ran and decisions that are made in state and national offices.…

The ability to read and write are in fact, of great importance in everyday life. Everything from walking down the street and reading street signs, to signing and understanding contracts, even being able to secure an ideal job require literacy. In this day and age, literacy is a necessity if one wants a shot at any normalcy in life. Obviously, being able to read and write for leisure and entertainment is good thing, but to think that that's all it's good for is ridiculous. For example, if a man wants to get his driver's license and purchase a car, he must read and understand the driving manual, be able to read the test questions, and interpret the street signs on the road. Not to mention all of the paperwork and signatures that come along with buying a vehicle. The positive aspects of literacy make themselves quite evident when looking for and applying for a job, and meeting certain pre-employment criteria. Literacy should be of utmost importance to everyone, and aside from being useful for entertainment and leisure purposes; it is imperative to become successful in…
But why do we even bother with writing? Why is it so relevant to everyday life? Writing is the base to the pyramid of life - it’s the stepping stool and starting grounds to becoming a successful person. Writing is the base to learning experiences that are found in your education, community and work. Writing does more than just that though. It defines you as a person by expressing who you are, allowing you to write your thoughts and ideas down on paper to be argued and explained to another at a later time. In addition, writing is an essential job skill in which it contributes to…
Without reading, communication would not be as easy. Information would move slower around the world. An important part of school is learning how to read. But in Chicago a study said “ Reading levels are the lowest in the poorest schools. In a survey of the 18 high schools with the highest rates of poverty within their student populations, Designs for Change, a research center in Chicago, notes that only 3.5 percent of students graduate and also read up to the national norm” (Kozol 58). If students are not given the opportunity to read then they later on will find difficulties getting jobs, etc. Research has also reported that “ The researchers find there’s a very strong correlation between family income and cognitive skills” (Researchers). In poor areas, like Chicago, key skills and information are not being taught in the public education system. The lack of learning may be from inadequate teachers, lack of funding, or lack of resources to teach.…
Literally Literacy Many people take literacy for granted while most across the world long to know how to read and write. I however love to read and write. I have had the luxury of learning these skills in my youth, as I have said above many people of the world are not as fortunate. While many children at a young age had people around them read stories, news articles, or even religious sermons I was taught how to read in a very adolescent stage. Through my life these skills have flourished into something more.…
Reading and writing is something not many people enjoy to do, however there are still a handful of people that enjoy reading and writing. In the modern age not many young people like to write including myself. When I have to write a paper, I usually do my best work the last minute. Although I do not like to stay up late, it is still when I do my best work.…
