Structure and Professional Bureaucracy
Reflect on your reading for the week, specifically Analytical Exercise 8. Is another form of structural configuration better suited to multiproduct, multiservice companies? If not, is there a form of departmentalization for multiproduct, multiservice companies which would match somewhat the divisional structure configuration?"
Explain how the following somewhat match each other:
• functional structure with simple structure
• divisional structure with departmentalization by product
• machine bureaucracy with centralized, mechanistic structure
• professional bureaucracy with decentralized, organic structure

Functional structure and simple structure are the most common forms of structure. Small companies use them forms of structure. With the smaller companies, most employees report straight to the owner of the company because there are not any other managers or supervisors. Both of these structures are good for businesses that are just starting or small.
Divisional structure and departmentalization by product forms are used for multiproduct businesses. Larger companies divide into departments consisting of people who specialize in certain areas. Departmentalization by product is where you have all product related services under that one department. Both of these types of companies rely on their procedures and rules that are in place.
Professional bureaucracy and organic structure are similar because they are both decentralized forms of control. A professional structure would be a company that has very knowledgeable employees about their

Bureaucratic structures stick to a strict hierarchy system when it comes to their management. Pre-bureaucratic structures lack in standards and are found more within small scale, start p companies. This structure is usually centralised and there is only one key decision maker. Product departmentalization “This form of organization allows personnel to develop total expertise in researching, manufacturing, and distributing a product line. Concentrating authority, responsibility, and accountability in a specific product department allows top management to coordinate actions” (Gibson, Ivancevich & Konopaske, 2011, p. 403). Product departmentalization organizes employees based on product lines or set of services they work with. Each product line has a department of its own, and each department has specialists in all of the functions needed to produce and sell that product such as marketing, manufacturing, accounting, and human resources. The department in this type of company operate autonomously from each other, for example the salespeople can talk to the design and manufacturing…

Product departmentalization is when a company is organized by specific products. Take a look at 3M Corp; they make both consumer and industrial products. All of 3M Crops products operate under different divisions (Griffin, 2013). For example their Post-it and Scotch Brite brands could be located in the same building, but do not have the same managers or staffing resources. Basically the mangers and staff for both brands are coexisting with no business interaction. This type of departmentalization can also apply to retail stores. Most retail stores are broken into different departments.…

With the bureaucracy organization working so well there was little need for change. In the early 1900s organizations were run using a conventional bureaucracy. A conventional bureaucracy is defined as an organization in which officeholders have defined positions and titles. Formal rules specify the duties of the officeholders. Personality distinctions are usually discouraged by the rules (The New York Times Company., 2010). This form of running an organization took shape using a pyramid design with a well defined chain of command all the way…

For our organization bureaucracy is the best style because bureaucracy has so much happening in it that everyone's responsibility must be clear. Because, everyone is responsible for answering to their managers and every manager is responsible for the actions of the people under him. Under this style bureaucracies have strict rules that cannot be bent or broken. This is to ensure that everyone in the organization sticks to their job, and that production and communication are kept to a single, unified standard.…
