The Sport Obermeyer case is mainly about the production and manufacturing process of a skiwear product. Sport Obermeyer is a high-end fashion skiwear design and manufacturing company located in Aspen, Colorado. It sells the products through department stores and ski shops. The company has a global supply network; however, most of its products are outsourced through the operations in Hong Kong and China which is a joint venture between Obermeyer and its Hong Kong partner. This case describes the information flow through all the members in the supply chain. Wally in Obermeyer needed to make demand forecast and place orders to suppliers before he can get enough information from the market. Before Wally made the decisions, he needed to know how to make forecast as close as possible to the market demand according to the previous record and how to balance orders between operations in Hong Kong and China to make sure the flexible production line and the lowest cost.

Recommendation for how many units of each style Wally should make during the initial phase of production. Assume that all of ten styles in the sample problem are made in HK, and that Wally’s initial production commitment must be at least 10,000 units.

In order to minimize the company’s risk of over stock due to relatively inaccurate demand forecast in the first-phase production, it is a wise idea to order at the minimum i.e. 10,000 units. According to Exhibit 10, the total number of all 10 styles added up to 20,000 units. Therefore the goal is to reduce this by half as well as taking mean and standard deviation of each style into account. Obviously, to produce half of the forecast, it has to produce at lower than the “mean” (Average Forecast) of each style. By taking standard deviation into account, this can be calculated using the formula

    To correct the inventory policy, we want to find the optimal ordering quantity based on the calculation EOQ=. Demand was calculated by taking the average number of customer orders per day over the first 50 days. We came up with a figure near 12.24 orders per day which we multiplied by 268 days for the entire simulation. Setup cost was provided for us at $1,000 per order and holding cost was generated by multiplying the cost per unit by the interest rate which gave us a yield of 60. Based on this information, EOQ was 331 units after rounding. From the history, this was the second change we made to the inventory policy, up from 299. This was a result of a discussion in demand, where we had calculated demand based on 218 days for the simulation instead of the 268 days of the actual simulation. Next we wanted to fix the reorder point so we could eliminate inventory shortages and determined we would like to do so while maintaining a 95% service level.     There were multiple issues weighing heavily on the mind Wally, a VP at Sports Obermeyer, in November of 1992. Sports Obermeyer, a successful manufacturer of ski apparel was having trouble planning the manufacturing levels of its various skiwear items for 1993-94 based on whatever scant information it had on the end customers’ likes and dislikes. Waiting to make these decisions till after the Las Vegas trade show, the one event which would give reliable retailer feedback, would prove very costly given the extremely long lead times of it’s suppliers in Hong Kong and China.     My decision is to find a methodology of calculating more accurate demand and supply figures to address the unpredictable world of short life cycle fashion. A good decision would result in minimizing the order cycle lead time necessary to produce the ski wear and have it delivered to retailers in time by establishing a method that would ensure each prediction as a personal decision making process and not the thoughts of a few strong-willed individuals. Another criterion would be by gathering data that would provide clear indication how end-consumers would respond to the company’s current line. A good solution would enable Obermeyer to decide on where and when to source each product (China vs. Hong Kong vs. an alternative factory).     2.) The cycle time between initial design of the ski parkas and the final sale to retailers begins in Febuary 1992 and ends in Septembe1993r, a total cycle time of approximately seventeen months. At the same time, Obermeyer production cycle is very long which is making it nearly impossible to adapt to the market.
