In Afghanistan, there are many different beliefs, but the prominent religion is Islam. Women in the Islamic culture are expected to remain pure and modest in public and not be seen without a veil or chadri by males outside of their…

Women’s rights have been a highly controversial topic throughout Islamic history. Historians to this day argue whether Islam broadens or restricts them. Some argue that women’s rights have expanded because they are considered equals in God’s eyes, are allowed to vote, and the government has attempted to broaden women’s rights. However, previous women rights have been taken away, laws favor men, and women are commonly valued for appearances.…
There are many political, religious, and cultural factors that shape the lives of Islamic women. Islam is one of the world’s fastest growing religions; however, Brooks argues that “Islam’s holiest texts have been misused to justify the repression of women, and how male pride and power have warped the original message of this once liberating faith.” The book also shows these factors have slowly been taking away women’s rights, rather than furthering them.…
Today I had an assignment for my sociology 101 class. The assignment was to observe the environment around us. The main goal is to see the actions or interactions of people around us. During my observation, I saw a pattern. I was scrupulous on picking the location of to people watch, but ultimately decided the memorial union was the best place, due to the fact that there are typically abundant amounts of students there.…
The Taliban regime took control of Kabul and implemented their interpretation of Islamic laws in the year 1996. The arrival of the Taliban marked a timeline completely different known to the women in Afghanistan. Paul Watson wrote an article in the L.A. Times about a doctor who experienced and witnessed the many medical mishaps due to the Taliban laws. Watson stated, “The Taliban were so obsessed with hiding women from men’s eyes that even a male surgeon could not see his dying patient’s exposed flesh” (Watson1). This statement describes how the women couldn’t be seen by the men, even if it was a doctor trying to save his female patient. In public the women had to wear a burka that covered their body from head to toe. Exposure of their bodies would lead to the women getting beaten, stoned, and raped by the Taliban. These actions were very much extreme for the women in Afghanistan to live by. They were not just supposed to wear a burka,…
As stated on the Course Project page, “An important part of our course is researching information on diversity and multiculturalism and its social, cultural, and ethical impact upon individual citizens, groups of people, and society at large.” For my research paper I chose to write about the promotional policy of a company in which a Latina who had been with the company for a longer period of time was not selected for a promotion. She accuses the company of engaging in discriminatory policies in which a man of Anglo descent was chosen for the position instead of her. In my paper I will talk about my research into the Hispanic culture, the role of a women in the Hispanic culture as well as women in the workplace. After I have talked about the above mentioned, I will enclose the scenario that I chose and will evaluate it. In conclusion I will try to create a plan to avoid a similar incident from occurring again.…
A norm is something that is accepted by society as the right thing to do. The norm I chose to breech was the idea that cereal should be eaten with a spoon the way I broke this norm is by using a fork as a replacement for the spoon.…

I believe alcohol is a depressant that alters perceptions, emotions, and senses. Alcohol first acts as a stimulant, and then it makes people feel relaxed and a bit sleepy. High doses of alcohol seriously affect judgment and coordination. Drinkers may have slurred speech, confusion, depression, short-term memory loss, and slow reaction times. I believe a vast amount of alcohol drunk in a short period of time may cause alcohol poisoning. Teens who uses alcohol can become psychologically dependent upon it to feel good dealing with life, or handle stressful situation. I believe, their bodies may demand more and more to achieve the same kind of high experienced in the beginning and . Some teens are also at risk of becoming physically addicted to alcohol. Withdrawal from alcohol can be painful and even life threatening. Symptoms can range from shaking, sweating, nausea, anxiety, and depression to hallucinations, fever, as well as convulsions. Alcoholism may start innocuously, due to the acceptability of social drinking, but over time, can lead to serious health problems, including brain, kidney and liver damage. I believe although alcoholics seem to be doing the most damage to themselves, they are hurting their families even more.…
The status of women has risen significantly over the last few decades, but in many parts of the world male domination and oppression continues. In many Middle Eastern countries, for example, women effectively live as prisoners, unable to leave the house except under the guardianship of a male guardian. They have…
As a report produced in 2000 by the Asian Development Bank observed, one of the main issues that has led to the subordination of and discrimination against women within Pakistan society is the cultural and religious practices that have developed over the centuries. Historically, women's rights have been considered to apply solely within the home and to their role as mothers and wives, yet these have been enforced positions rather than choice.…
