Southwestern Accreditation Facilitative Projects’ Collaboration

The goal of an early childhood program is to prepare children from birth to five for kindergarten. According to the U.S. Department of Education, “The years before a child reaches kindergarten are among the most critical in his or her life to influence learning (Prepare My Child for School, http://www.ed.gov/parents/earlychild/ready/resources.html)”. The Obama Administration under his Education Act has established an array of services to help daycare providers and early childhood centers to continue to achieve this goal. Although daycares are responsible for teaching children the knowledge they need to thrive, it is dually important to empower parents and guardians with information to reinforce their child’s learning. We also empower families by providing resources, websites and do trainings for parents.

When I founded Affordable and Loving Childcare, LLC in 2002, I had one purpose and that was to nurture children by providing a safe and structured learning environment. However, I recognized very early that “it takes a village to raise a child”. In an effort to move towards excellence, I began building a team of staff who valued children and education. As I worked diligently to obtain my associates degree in 2005 – I would encounter some difficulties dealing with some families and others would be long lasting trusting relationships.

I knew that I eventually wanted to become accredited so I became a member of the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) in 2003. In 2006, I began attending Connecticut Association for the Education of Young Children (CAEYC) conferences and networking and that was where I met other day providers and was encouraged to pursue accreditation.

The program collaboration I chose to research is the Southwestern Accreditation

To maintain a commitment to professionalism in childcare you should set a goal for yourself. My goal in my classroom is to set a standard of excellence with in my facility and to commit myself to the growth and development of each child in offering a positive, kind, loving, and safe atmosphere. I have respect, not only for myself but, for my center, each child, and their families. I keep all parental information shared with me confidential. I also uphold all health and safety regulations and make children's well-being my top priority. I remain trustworthy to children parents and staff at the center. I also respect family diversity. This includes but is not limited to cultural differences, orientation, or economic status. I encourage individuality in children. I treat each child with respect and help them to build a positive self- image. Being informed is being ready to assist any child with any need they may have. I feel it is important to always stay positive and keep a smile on your face. Stay on top of new regulations for your center as well as updated laws and other developments within early childhood education. Always make sure you have information to help parents that have children with additional needs your center cannot provide and have contact information readily available for the reporting of any sexual abuse, child abuse, or neglect. I feel I am a kind and loving person and am genuinely concerned about the growth and development of each child entering my center. I want to give them every opportunity to grow and learn in a safe environment. I love working and being around children not just in a group setting but also a one on one setting.…

My first client was a single mom who needed to go on state daycare assistance to help pay for her child’s care. Knowing the struggles my own mother had, I agreed to become a registered childcare provider with the intention of helping her. I jumped into registration and began the trainings that were required by the state. I was heartbroken hearing different provider’s lack of vision for quality childcare. I was determined, “if I am going to do this, I am going to provide care with excellence.” It truly was a turning point for me.…

Nearly twenty years ago I was one of the only ‘stay at home moms’ in my neighborhood. I began to be asked by friends and neighbors to watch their children, so after my third child was born I had my home licensed as a large family day care. I qualified for the larger capacity license because of the many years of volunteer experience working in my children’s classrooms and teaching Sunday school. While working as a home daycare provider I decided I wanted to someday be able to teach preschool or have a childcare center outside my home. I researched the requirements and discovered that I had a long road ahead of me. The first step was to get…

ACDC’s mission is to provide quality, affordable childcare to the residents of the community and surrounding area. The service area is a rural, economically depressed county that continually ranks in the lowest 10 percent of per-capita income in the state. The organization’s seven-member board of directors is comprised of volunteer representatives from various agencies throughout the community–the school district, community college, hospital, Department of Human Services, etc. The board members bring a breadth of human services experience to the oversight of the day care, but most do not possess an accounting or financial background.…

The face to face learning opportunities assists teachers in helping them navigate “rocky everyday dilemmas”. The technology learning opportunity allows for teachers to grow in their understanding of technology and how to use technology to strength the learning styles of the pupils in their classroom. Finally, the Accreditation Learning Center “focuses on developing and delivering training to help programs better understand the NAEYC Accreditation process.” There are many cultural and controversial topics that have been under discussion within the NAEYC. A few of the common issues talked about are: anti-bias, dealing with tragedies and disasters, ethics, engaging in the diverse family, and Guiding challenging behaviors and dealing with bullying. Two of these topics stood out to me in regards to my last field experience. I spent my Wednesday lab at Valerie Elementary in a 2nd grade classroom. Coming from a very affluent, primarily white, Catholic grade-school and high school, this was a very different experience for me. The two particular issues that stood out to me were engaging in the diverse family and dealing with bullying. There was a lot…

Being accredited is how an institution is recognized as a university having a legitimate degree program. The value of the degree you receive is based upon accreditation, college ranking, and the perception of the institutions image in organizations and society. As my problem statement I would like to find out what the value of accreditation is, what it takes to become accredited, maintain accreditation, and why some degrees from accredited institutions are not recognized by other institutions and business organizations. Some research objectives I would like to achieve would be to find out if the loss of credits in the transfer from school to school is due to different accreditation standards in the different accreditation organizations. Also, with comparing accredited schools, does the rank of the school make the degree received more or less valuable? Another objective is to find out what makes a degree from one accredited school more valuable than a degree from another accredited school. And finally, I would like to find out if a degree from a non-traditional school is less valuable than a degree from a traditional “Brick and Mortar” school. To solve my problem statement and answer my research objectives I will be conducting exploratory research using secondary data.…
