English 101 T/Th 10/14/08 Analysis of “Social Bodies” Mrs. Deborah A. Sullivan is a well established author. She teaches at Arizona State University teaching sociology. She is the co-author of Labor Pains: Modern Midwives and Home Birth. She also has written a book of her own; Cosmetic Surgery: The Cutting Edge of Commercial Medicine in America. The piece of writing that I have to Analyze and Critique is a passage out of her book The Cutting Edge. The first sentence of the passage is her thesis. Every culture has customs that prescribe deliberately changing a body’s natural appearance. I believe that Mrs. Deborah A. Sullivan is correct in her beliefs, as well as her findings. Adults have the right to do what they choose to their bodies. Whether that is surgery or a tattoo, we need to respect that they can make decisions for themselves. If they want a full body tattoo then let them have it. They can make their own decisions about their body. Some of society actually tries to set themselves apart from the rest. The punks or the Goths are the most profound of them all. They go out of the way to get every piece of their body pierced or tattooed just to be different. They dress in all black also to be different. I think they were the people who started it all. Nobody liked tattoos until people started to set themselves apart. It was actually looked down upon until the 1980’s. My beliefs are the same as Mrs. Deborah Sullivan’s. I think people get tattoos and piercings just to fit in or actually to set themselves apart. But competent adults can make their own decisions about what they want their body to look like and there is nothing we can do about it but respect their decisions. I believe that her article is true in all aspects. All in all, my beliefs are the same as Mrs.…
According to Lefrancois, Social cognitive theory is a label for Bandura’s theory, which explains social learning through imitation using the principles of operant conditioning while recognizing the importance of cognitive activities such as imagining, symbolizing and anticipating (Lefrancois, p.386). Bandura’s theory was based on Skinners operant conditioning. If you recall Skinner believed in “free will” Therefore, Skinner believed that we have a mind, but due to the limitations on how to study our ”mind” he studied behavior because it could be seen by observation. Skinner was known for operant conditioning that was based on Thorndike’s “Law of effect”. Skinner and Thorndike believed that if a behavior…
The group started with the usual check-in and summarizing what happened at the previous session. Next, the group facilitator asked members to review their goals for the meeting. Three group members expressed their concerns with having difficulties with managing anger and frustration, so the discussion focused on exploring emotional issues related to these emotions.…
My research interests articulate around three axes: social perception in social cognition; foundational issues in cognitive science, and collaborative work on the mental files theory.…
This clique is a cross between the well off, athletes and the most fashionable. They are known and labeled throughout every high school as the "cool kids," but in actuality tend to be pretty smart but actually kind of bad. Normally they get away with everything and anything because of parental influence. When they do get into trouble it is often kept secretive. They tend to be pretty sneaky but yet they also might have a bit of favoritism shown towards them because they are in many activities. Some of these kids tend to not be open minded to others and/or their ideas, which is sad in a way because they go their whole high school career with no other outlook but their own. It is no wonder why the average teenager suffers from depression and suicide attempts at least once in their life because they feel as if they cant deal with the "stress" of fitting…
Observing is something we simply cannot help but do everyday in our lives. We mainly take little notice of many of the minute occurrences that we see, but all things we see can certainly help us gain a greater understanding of the world in which we live. I set out to observe three different places hoping to gain knowledge of what teens subconsciously and sometimes consciously do. My first observation was in the lobby of the Wynnsong movie theater in Winston-Salem. The next would be at the front of the school; its members were all car riders. Finally, I conclude this observation in a recent Student Council meeting. As I drew myself back away from any attention in these places, I took specific notice of a few major characteristics of the behavior in which individuals acted. Those were as follows: clothing, clique/group, social inclinations, gender, adult accompaniment, and approximate age groups.…
In our generation we have gone through numerous economical, social, and political changes. Some of which our parents would never have dreamed of. Things such as the cell phone, Wi-Fi, 9/11, and various mass shootings have permanently changed the way our generation lives and has forced our parents' to adapt to a new way of life.…
Watching movies is a leisurely activity enjoyed by many people. Not only are movies enjoyable to get a good laugh, cry, or just to relax to, but there are many things to be learned from movies as well. For this project I choose to examine two movies from a sociological perspective. The two movies I chose are, Law Abiding Citizen and 8 Mile.…
The time period in which many African Americans endured crucial discipline and segregation was known as the Civil Rights Movement. The Civil Rights Movement took place during the 1950s and 1960s. African Americans were brave during this time period; they decided that enough was enough and that change needed to be implemented.…
I began my Sociological Observation Paper at the town’s local baseball field. It was about 8:30 p.m. when the game began, and it was about this time when I noticed the connections between the baseball players and the weary watchers. The event can be called a sort of an aggregate, a term used to describe a group of people found at a certain place at a certain time which I became acquainted with on the 25th of June towards the end of the class lecture. While there, I was a bit absent-minded, seeing as I had take notes of the behavior of the people watching while keeping close ties to the players’ interactions with one another.…
I chose to observe a sex offenders group at office of an association of licensed professional counselors in Hinesville, Georgia. The group consisted of 9 sex offenders and the counselor, who was a woman, and myself. The group meet in the evening and everyone was present and on time. We sat in a circle, and I was introduced. I had to sign a confidentiality agreement, and the guys signed something stating they didn’t mind my being there. There were no introductions, as everyone knew each other. Group therapy is seen as the most appropriate form of treatment in the United States. The rationale for this is the argument that sex offenders require group therapy because effective confrontation of manipulative behavior can only be done by other individuals who have been through the same dynamic. Groups are seen as necessary and appropriate for all sexual offenders, regardless of their individual personalities and the factors underlying their abusive behavior (Grossman, Martis, & Fichter, 1999).…
From the beginning of the story down to the very end rebellious human behavior is all you really see from the younger people loud and clear. It all starts with three girls in two piece bathing suits and no shoes slowly making their way through the A&P grocery store. Of course Sammy immediately notices them and being nineteen how could these three girls in revealing bathing suits not catch his attention. He sees them as something new to the regular routine he is use too, something refreshing. He critiques there bodies and looks and then compares them to the other customers in the store which he calls "sheep" and "house-slaves". So use to there old routine that they all seem to flow in the same direction down the isles one by one even though he says it's "not like we have one-way signs or anything" they just seem to be afraid to change the way things usually are. Unlike these three girls who chose to not only walk in the opposite direction of everyone else but to move slowly scanning each shelf, obviously enjoying the attention, and avoiding eye contact.…
In the beginning of this article it describes on how rape became. The cause is “medicalized” a social problem. The two sociologists interviewed a sample of men who had been sent to prison for rape. The men talked about their motives on why they committed these violent acts. An assumption is that male sexual aggression is unusual or strange. The feminist perspective views rape as an act of violence and social control to “keep women in their place.” They also view pornography as an important element in a larger system of sexual violence. Many convicted rapists justify their rapes by saying that their victim enjoyed herself despite the use of a weapon. Many argued, they had been instrumental in making her fantasy come true. A rapist might see his act as a legitimized form of revenge or punishment. Some of the men said that they raped their wives or other significant women to get even with them. Men believe they have the right to punish and discipline women. Rape is used “to put women in their place.” Men take out their anger issues on women to feel more powerful and know that someone is less than them. Indeed a number of men indicated that the decision to rape has been made after they realized they were in control of the situation. One man explained, “Rape gave me power to do what I wanted to do without feeling I had to please a partner or respond to a partner.” In conclusion all these men justify their crimes as being in control and getting even with women. They felt like having committed rape was fine and didn’t have a conscience.…
The purpose of this study was to conduct observations, using two different methods, on children, between the ages of 4-5, to understand their emotional behaviors in a social and learning environment as well as determining which method of observation was more reliable. There are different methods of conducting observations, but two main ones include naturalistic observation and experimental observation. A naturalistic observation method is when a researcher studies a person or group in their natural environment or setting; the behavior that is observed is one that occurs in a person’s everyday life. In contrast, an experimental observation method is when a researcher is studying a specific behavior in a laboratory-like environment.…
What is socialization and its internal and external processes? Socialization is a continuous awareness and understanding of the values and norms to distinguish a sense of self. Most of these norms and values are learned in childhood, but the socialization process never stops. Socialization begins internally when an individuals are infants and young children. It all starts with imitation of the things they see adults doing, like playing with moms make up or playing kitchen, or nurse. As the child grows, these acts of imitation grow into more complicated games than just playing. Mead calls this “taking the role of the other” (Giddens p.77). When a child reaches this stage, they are starting to see themselves through the eyes of others. This is the beginning of the development of one’s social self, which is achieved through self-consciousness, or being aware of your identity as a person separate from others.…
