In the short story ‘’The Nature of Pure Evil’’, the word evil seems to be used casually without trying to explain something. Hedy’s female ‘’friends’’ don’t seem to really think about the meaning of evil and they only use it to describe something that they think isn’t correct. For instance Brigit, one of Hedy’s friend insist on saying that: ’’If he’s not crazy, then he’s pure evil’’ [p.112; L.57] Brigit also has her idea of pure evil, but in this short story everyone has one, and so it seems that the word lose its meaning and changes into a banal word. One of Hedy’s female friend says something on the room in Ottawa with a pentagram on the ceiling: ‘’There was something evil in there, I could feel it. However, the first time she made a call was when she saw Stanley with another woman and ‘’ [her] throat tightened at the thought of Stanley taking his bride to lunch in Chartwell.’’[p.113; L.86]. Despite telling herself that she is happy, she tries to do some harm to Stanley, which means that she seeks revenge for what he did to her. There is a difference in the meaning of revenge between the short story and the play ‘’The Butcher’’ by Nicolas Billon. The definition of evil is taken a little more seriously because the subjects of the play are about wars, revenge and the fact that it would not stop and become a cycle of violence .In the play, Elena seeks revenge for what the Butcher did to her, but she knows exactly that is trying to get justice. For her ‘’revenge is the confession of pain’’ [p.68; L.5] and so she wants to express her pain because she sees it as the only way to tell the world how she feels. Her revenge is glorified, and she makes it look like a noble act that will reach everyone since revenge ’’speaks the language everyone can understand: fairness and hate’’ [p.68; L.7-8].
