Semiotic analysis of Winter by Tori Amos
The song Winter by Tori Amos conveys the importance of independence and self actualization in life though levels of metaphors and imagery. Using semiotics to express deeper meanings, she gives a narrative account of life in which she never finds contentment due to childhood fatherly dependence and juvenile ideas of a fantastical adult life.

The song adopts a poignant musical style with slow tempo and piano as the major instrument which was uncommon for a pop song of the early nineties. Strong periods in the song are emphasized though the use of a cello and choir. The performer, Tori Amos, gives the song a feeling of wistful yearning with her soft voice which intensifies for dramatic points and calms to a whisper for more subtle expression. The first person perspective creates an intimate portrayal of Amos. The diction is that of a child, better describing the childish mindset of Amos in the song. Using semiotics through multilayered indexical signs she tells an underlying story in which once the symbolism is known, the tale still cannot fully be comprehended without understanding what the imagery of the symbols represents.

Winter symbolizes childhood throughout the song, which she introduces in the first stanza as being a pleasant nostalgic memory. All relations to winter are references to childhood or childlike ideas. Amos' vocal style is calm during this segment to enhance the felling of comfort, though quickly becomes strong subsequently when an event arises. "Sleeping beauty trips me with a frown. I hear a voice, 'Your must learn to stand up for yourself cause I can't always be around" (Amos Lines 9-12), this represents a struggle in childhood at which the father makes clear the importance of self reliance and its necessity in life, a primary theme of the song. This struggle represented by sleeping beauty may be Amos' awakening into womanhood, a common interpretation of the sleeping beauty tale.

The mentioning of snow may seem like nothing, but if one digs deeper beyond the simple lyrics, he/she will find that snow actually symbolizes the depression the girl is feeling. The singer states, “Your twisted mind is like snow on the road.” (2-3) In these lyrics it is said that her mind “is like snow on the road.” During the winter, snow on the streets blocks cars and people from reaching their ultimate destination. Therefore, her mind is like a roadblock keeping her for happiness. During depression, all the sadness in the depressed person feels, is in their mind, but they cannot seem to move past it. That is what makes it depression, when someone experiences emotions of severe dejection. During depression it feels like one is trapped in an emotional prison that they cannot escape from. They are all alone. But, what the speaker in this story is trying to do is tell her that she has people who care about her, and he will stay with her and help her.…

In the first section of the song’s lyrics the atmosphere of sadness is laid down through the first piece of imagery showing loneliness; “She walks to school with the lunch she packed” and “Wearin’ the same dress she wore yesterday”. This atmosphere, from imagery of loneliness, continues on throughout the second and third section by the teacher seeing bruises and not saying a word about it, or the neighbors hear her cries in the night but don’t do anything as well and go back to sleep. Imagery of abuse is created by the lyrics in the first section from “She hides the bruises with linen and lace”, and the fourth section “Somebody cries in the middle of the night” and “A fragile soul caught in the hands of fate”. For the fourth section where it says “the hands of fate” there is a double figurative display, the first one being that thy personify fate as if to have hands, and the second being the metaphor they use to compare the young girl’s fate and beatings, being derived from the hands.…

On the last stanza the line ‘the worlds a bear shrugged in his den’ suggests he is experiencing the bear pit. Further more, the word ‘snug suggests the warmth inside; ‘snoring night’ is inside away from rest of the world while winter is outside. Inside all inviting but outside it’s harsh. The line ‘the fog unfolds its bitter scent’ suggests its comparing ice to fog and also its comparing the fog to the bad smell…

On the cover of More! the character again embodies the self for the reader. She represents the more! "ethos of youthful, cheeky impertinence" (in Curran 1996: 189) Her red, low-cut dress suggests that she is sassy; a vixen that has sexual needs and is not afraid to fulfil them. Again, the clear skin and perfect features encourage the reader to believe that there is an inner-beauty within everyone that will shine through. However, the More! model does not appear as innocent as the 19 model. Her hair is swept more vigorously from her face and therefore creates a more disrupted, chaotic image than the previous. The innocence depicted by the clear complexion of the 19 model is challenged here as the More! model raises her eyebrow into an arch; she has a glint in her eye and pouts her lips proudly. As we notice the presence of a man in the left hand side of the front cover, we therefore interpret this facial expression as sexual prowess - this girl knows what she wants and she knows exactly how to get it. The male figure is not personalised; indeed we only see a leg, an arm and a crotch and yet we are fully aware of the masculinity of the character. This could suggest that, in subversion to the representation offered within male magazines, the man is the sexual object here. It is also significant that the male is wearing a kilt as it could suggest that the female is metaphorically wearing the trousers in the relationship. This interpretation would only become apparent if the reader was accustomed with the relevant social codes and textual codes of gendered magazines. If the reader is familiar with popular culture however, they could assume the man in the kilt to be the actor James Redmond who portrays Finn in Hollyoaks (a half-Scottish Lord) and therefore presume that there is an in-depth interview with him in the magazine - this is suggested by the text at the top of the magazine cover - "Finn-tastic! We Check out James Redmond's Morning Glory".…

The first verse of the song sets the tone of respect and the theme of potential. The first lines of the song use multiple metaphors that read “She’s just a girl, and she’s on fire. Hotter than a fantasy, longer like a highway. She’s living in a world, and it’s on fire,” which demonstrate how this girl is just an ordinary girl but she has been able to accomplish great things in this competitive world that we live in. The following verse also demonstrates how the ordinary girl has “stood her ground” in the competitive world. The verse contains an idiom that reads “Oh, she got both feet on the ground...Oh, she got her head in the clouds and she’s not backing down,” which states that the ordinary girl has ideas that may seem unrealistic but she will strive to make these ideas come to life and not just be a daydream. Throughout the song “This girl is on fire” is repeated, hence it is the chorus. When the chorus is on, the audience just awaits that powerful note, because throughout the song Alicia Keys puts the most emphasis on these five words. The repetition of that line demonstrates the strength and potential this ordinary girl has. Also the repetition and vibrato behind the chorus, makes the metaphor that much more powerful and believable to the audience; it is able to evoke a sense of hope in the audience for this ordinary girl.…

The characterization of the beast is in itself a sign of crudeness in various forms since each part of his beastly body is formed from a variety of acceptably ferocious animals in real. For example, the facial structure is of a mandrill, horns of a buffalo, the jaws, teeth and mane of a lion, tusks of a wild boar and leg and tail of a wolf. Each of these parts relates to a wild or dangerous trait. One other example is the rose that is a sign of love, hope,…

She took her tracks and headed for her favorite place on earth. Dancing was her life; she couldn’t live without it. It freed her her from everyday worries, even relieved her resident wounds, and on some days it was the only reason why she’d get out of bed in the morning. She put on her dancing outfit, set the recorder and stood in the middle of the wide, empty red-floored room. It was, by coincidence, that the first track was the one she loved to dance most to. It was the song that had always described best her feelings and even her whole life in some of its lines with its romantic, yet mysteriously gloomy tune.…
