Abstract: 'Go rural' is the slogan of marketing gurus after analyzing the socio-economic changes in villages. Rural marketing is an evolving concept, and as a part of any economy has untapped potential; marketers have realized the opportunity recently. Improvement in infrastructure and reach, promise a bright future for those intending to go rural. Rural consumers are keen on branded goods nowadays, so the market size for products and services seems to have burgeoned. The rural population has shown a trend of switching to a state of gradual urbanization in terms of modernisation and the shift is because of saturation of urban market. Rural marketing strategies are significantly different from the marketing strategies aimed at an urban or industrial consumer. Study objectives revolve around these strategies, covered with case studies. • Client and location specific promotion • Joint or cooperative promotion.. • Bundling of inputs • Management of demand • Developmental marketing • Unique selling proposition (USP) • Extension services • Business ethics • Analyzing mindset of consumers before purchasing • Brand ambassadors - impact
Henceforth, we feel that only those companies will survive and win over the rural consumers who apply strategies in innovative ways by understanding the mindset of them.

    This paper is an attempt to look into the rural market of India particularly with the focus of FMCG sector ( market ). The Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) sector is a corner stone of the Indian economy. This sector touches every aspect of human life. This sector is excited about the rural population whose incomes are rising and the lifestyles are changing. There are as many middle income households in the rural areas as there are in the urban. Thus the rural marketing has been growing steadily over the years and is now bigger than the urban market for FMCGs. Globally, the FMCG sector has been successful in selling products to the lower and middle income groups and the same is true in India. Over 70% of sales is made to middle class households today and over 50% of the middle class is in rural India. With a near saturation and cut throat competition in urban market, many producers of FMCGs are driven to chalk out bold new strategies for targeting the rural consumers. Many companies including MNCs and regional players started developing marketing strategies to lure the untapped rural market. While developing the strategies, the marketers need to treat the rural consumers differently from the urban consumers because they are economically, socially and psycho-graphically different to each other. The key reasons that has urged the FMCG companies to enter the rural market are- Large population, Effectiveness of communication, Rising income of people, growth projections of rural market.…

    A debate continued for a long time amongst the Indian marketers, both practitioners & academicians, on the justification for the existence of the distinct discipline of rural marketing. Consequently, two schools of thought emerged. The first school belived that the products/services, marketing tools & strategies that are successful in urban areas, could be transplanted with little or no more modifications in rural areas. However, the second school saw a clear distinction between urban & rural India, & suggested a different approach, skills, tools & strategies to be successful in rural markets.
