Rocket Science Personal Statement
Sometimes, it is rocket science. As I looked through the externship opportunities for this January, one stood out: Greenbelt, Maryland, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, working with the systems engineering team for the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). Among all the externships, this was the only one that matched my interests: aerospace, astronomy, and precision mechanical engineering. I’ve been following the progress of the JWST for years - I remember my dad handing me an issue of Popular Science and in it were the early plans to replace the Hubble. Since then, the JWST became one of NASA’s programs, along with the Space Race, Shuttle, and ISS, that inspired me to pursue mechanical and aerospace engineering. Working in Greenbelt is far more than a chance to see this inspiration first-hand, though - anyone can visit the Space Flight Center if they want. But the opportunity to apply my education as a mechanical engineer to an area I’m passionate about, with a direct connection to my career interests, is invaluable. What’s learned in a working environment can’t be replicated in the classroom - …show more content…
As I apply to summer internships at companies such as Boeing and Lockheed Martin, I do so with the intent to continue into the aerospace industry following graduation. While this externship could solidify my interests in doing so, it may also motivate me to explore career opportunities as well. I also understand this time in Greenbelt is just a brief introduction to the world of aerospace engineering. While I would work alongside those that hold what I perceive to be my dream jobs, I know I must temper my enthusiasm and keep expectations realistic. My goal from this externship is to compare my current interests and understanding of aerospace engineering to those of a veteran in the industry, gaining insight by working within the sector rather than observing from the

Although Jim held much respect for Van Allen, he never took a course with him because he lacked the confidence. He confides that he “didn’t want him to know how ignorant I was” (page 73). Instead in his junior year, he took a general astronomy course taught by Professor Satoshi Matsushima, where he befriended a student named Andy Lacis. The two did so well during the course that Matsushima suggested they take the graduate qualifying exams in physics, which unexpectedly, both of the undergrads passed. Their success escorted them straight into graduate school and earned them financial support from NASA graduate traineeships.…

The summer internship at Fermilab will give me a real feel of how science, technology, engineering and math function together in the workplace. I look forward to gaining broad exposure and hands-on experience through the TARGET program at Fermilab. As Brian Greene said, “Science is the process that takes us from confusion to understanding in a manner that's precise, predictive and reliable - a transformation, for those lucky enough to experience it, that is empowering and emotional.” I have felt the power of this process. By interning at Fermilab I can experience even more…

I have always been interested in Science and its associated subjects from infancy. It is no surprise I have exceptional interest in studying Diagnostic Radiography due to its practical science nature. My curiosity in practical science grew after my first dispersion of light by a triangular prism experiment. As a child, I was curious about the formation of rainbow and tried to workout how the rainbow is formed. My desire for science made me reject an offer from one of the prestigious colleges in Ghana to study Business to one of the deprived areas in Ghana to study Science. Studying Science in Ghana with shortage of teachers and limited resources did not deter me from studying hard and eventually graduating as the best Science Student from my college. Furthermore, I represented the college in the National Science and Mathematics Quiz program.…

During the summer of 2014, I had the opportunity to be an intern at Advantage Resourcing, Inc. in Southfield Michigan. I got firsthand experience in the field of Marketing and Business in just the matter of four months. It was an honor and privilege to be one of the eight interns who were selected to be a part of such a vastly expanded and innovative business such as this one. Through this great opportunity, I found and channeled my strengths and learned what it takes to be a successful businessman. I was able to get hands on in business affairs and get to know clients and fellow business partners personally. Interacting with clients showed me how business men and women both get involved and accomplishes goals in the business field. Despite only being just an intern I worked hard for this enterprise and in return they made me feel a part of a family. This was a family that is a team with one goal, which was to find and provide the best engineers for our automotive clients here in the city that is known and proud of to be the home of classic American cars, Detroit, Michigan.…

    Aerospace Engineer

My will to become an aerospace engineer comes indirectly from my father. Not that he is an aerospace engineer himself but because he gave me the love of space. Indeed, my father is a formal civil engineer and he spent a big part of his engineer's career to build runways for airports. He used to take me with him on his workplaces when during my childhood. There were many planes taking off and that fascinated me. later, when I was eleven years old, he took me with him in a small plane to show me how the cockpit was.at that moment I decided that I wanted to be a pilot and I did everything in order to realize my dream: I tried to travel by plane as many times as possible.in high school, I was not the best in every subject but I was untouchable in math and physics. Unfortunately my dream was broken after I graduated from high school, as I went to pass a test in the company my father worked for, a company that also formed future pilots, to determine if I had the abilities to become a pilot. Unfortunately for me I did not pass the test because of my eye's problem. Indeed, since I am nearsighted, the testers told me I was not qualified for their pilot program. I was really disappointed but I still wanted to find a job related to aerospace, planes and which fitted my abilities in math and physics. I searched on internet and I found the job that matched all the specifications I wanted.it was aerospace engineering.in my researches, I also found that engineers' job is to innovate, create new things to ameliorate living conditions to make the world better. Those characteristics caught my attention and really encourage me to in…

I have always had a passion for the STEM field. Ever since I was a child I have been exposed to biomedical engineering from a young age, have always loved my science and classes, and have had experiences that have introduced me to different fields of STEM. So far I have taken ten STEM classes in Highschool. and my favorite was Biology. I remember loving every second of every lab we did and excelled in them. I have taken 4 lab based courses Pre-AP Biology, Pre-AP chemistry, AP physics and AP Chemistry. Out of all the labs in all the classes, my favorite was the pig section lab. This experience was a very poignant moment for me and I could see myself doing something of that nature as a career. From that moment on I knew that STEM was the right…

I hope to gain knowledge of the industry through the internship, learn what the work environment is like, and learn how the industry is changing, and what's probably going to be changed when I get there. One thing I wish to get from the internship is knowledge of the industry, because I am not actually sure what areas I want to go into yet, although I have a good idea. Another thing I hope to see and get to know is the work environment, I want to know what I’m going to be doing day in and day out, and try and get a glimpse of myself in that position. Finally, one of the last things I hope to gain is the knowledge of how the industry changes from time to time, and if it does, what probably going to be changed by the time I get there, and to almost prepare for what I’m going to be tasked with on a daily basis.…

I am interested in the Science program (much like my sister) and there is so much I am looking forward to. I am keen on getting the exposure offered by the university especially since it is in another country and the education system is so very different, and also as I would be meeting many new people from different backgrounds, cultures and nationalities. I am also inclined towards this activity as I would be given a whole new set of responsibilities, the biggest being of handling myself in a completely new “habitat”! And therefore I hope to emerge and as an independent, tolerant and changed individual. I believe this program will give me a whole new perspective on science as well as the outlook on life. The sciences taught and the methods of teaching are extremely different yet awfully interesting (as I have gathered from students who have previously been on this trip) and the trips to various labs , listening to lectures by famous professors and the video conference with somebody at NASA is said to be very enjoyable. The thought of seeing science from a whole new perspective excites me; it brings a chill down my spine. And where a changed outlook on life is concerned, I believe getting a view on this wonderful game known as life will be exceptionally beneficial to me just…
