Road Trip
The Best Trip Ever
And so it began, the countdown to what would be the best trip of my life which was about to start on the next morning and all I had to do was get my things ready that I wanted to take with me. I couldn’t wait for the day to end so that I could go to sleep and wake up and leave for Ulladulla. I had been to Ulladulla once before when I was only 4yrs old and my mum told me that I loved it and never wanted to leave. Well I was now the time of the year where our whole family would go on holidays together to a chosen location, and this year it was my choice so obviously I chose Ulladulla.

It was now 7:30pm and I had finished packing so I thought that I would make myself a quick dinner and sit down to watch some television for a bit before going to bed. By the time I had made myself some scrambled eggs and heated up some baked beans, settled down in the lounge chair and turned the TV onto the right channel it was just in time for How I Met Your Mother’s new double episodes at 8pm.

As soon as the episodes had finished at 9pm I went up to the kitchen and washed my plate and fork up, then went down to my room and hopped into bed ready for some sleep knowing that when I woke up the next morning I would be setting out for Ulladulla. But there was one problem; I had no idea what the hotel looked like or what the name of it was. So I got my iPhone off my bedside table and rung my mother to find out what the name of the hotel in Ulladulla was so I knew what to look for when I drove into Ulladulla. After a 10 minute talk to find out the name and location of this hotel in Ulladulla I finally went back to bed at 9:15pm and fell asleep really quick.

“Buzz-Buzz, Buzz-Buzz” went my alarm at 4:30am. I was still very tired from all the packing I had done the day before but as soon as I remembered where I was going today I was as awake as I could ever be. On that note I had a shower, got dressed, made myself some toast, brushed my teeth and picked up my suitcase and put it into the boot of my car. After I had placed the suitcase into the boot I walked back up to the front door and locked up the house then went back to my car and got inside, turned the car on and set off for a long 230km drive down the coast of New South Wales which was supposed to be a total time of 3 hours and 14 minutes.

And I’m off and on my way down to Ulladulla ready for a great relaxing week with the family. But just as I thought I was on my way to a perfect weekend I got a call from my Uncle who had his car brake down on the Princes Highway near Thirroul. Him, his wife and two children were coming along to Ulladulla as well so I lucky for them and me they were broken down on a road in which is was going to drive down to Ulladulla on anyway. So off I set on my trip again but this time a stop in Thirroul to pick up family members.

With 85km down and 145km left I had to stop my trip with a pit stop at a McDonalds in Appin. Seeing as though I was having a toilet break I thought to myself “Since I’m here I might as well have a food and drinks break too”. And so I did, then I once again set off for Ulladulla and soon to pick up my Uncle and his family who had broken down near Thirroul.

“Turn left in 2km for access to Thirroul” I read out to myself aloud. As soon as I saw this sign I took the exit off The Princes Highway that was to Thirroul and pulled over to the side of the road where I called my Uncle to find out just whereabouts he and his families car had broken down near Thirroul. My Uncle replied with “We actually had someone jump-start our car and we are now on The Princes Highway again on our way there”. When I heard my Uncle reply to me with that message I was stunned and confused in why he didn’t let me know that he had gotten help from some stranger and were all on their way to Ulladulla again and leaving me in Thirroul ready to pick them up and all go there together. “Oh well see you there then” I replied to my Uncle and hung up my phone and got back into my car and started the engine and was off once again.

50km left till Ulladulla and I was singing along to the CD I had put into my car’s CD player. I decided to switch over to the radio for a second and heard the radio channel’s traffic reporter say that there was a big hold up on the Princes Highway 43km outside Ulladulla. ”Oh crap” were the first things that went through my head as I knew that there was no more turn-offs till Ulladulla so I was going to be sitting in the hold-up most likely all the way into Ulladulla. I was not very happy about this at all!

Will this turn out to be the best trip ever?? Find out what happens next in Book 2 of the Road Trip Series!!

Set in 1919, following the end of World War I, the novel takes place in the wilderness of Northern Ontario and on the battlefields of France and Belgium. Niska, an Oji-Cree medicine woman, is the remnant of her native relatives who refused to assimilate in the 19th century. She rejected European beliefs and culture and continues to thrive in the bush in a manner befitting her and her traditions. Niska’s voice is one of two narratives that complete the novel. After getting word that her closest thing to living family, Elijah, is coming back from the war she paddles the three-day journey to meet him in town. She finds, however, that it is not Elijah but her nephew Xavier who has returned from battle. In an attempt to heal her only relative, who has clearly been sucked dry of his soul and has hardened with slaughter and turned hollow from morphine, she begins to recount the stories of her past. She believes that perhaps this will revive Xavier and the Three Day Road will not be one to his demise. Similarly, Xavier attempts to stumble over his story for his aunt and unearths ghosts of his bullet-riddled past.…

Moira’s bad attitude causes Barry to doubt his parenting skills and devours his confidence. Firstly, Barry‘s confusion in raising Moira alone, leads him to seek advice from others. W.D. Valgardson illustrates, “he sought the advice of women at work who had teenage daughters.” (Valgardson 2). The result of Barry’s confusion causes him to seek the advice of his fellow female mother workers. Secondly, when Barry seeks advice from his students, one of which helps. The student speaks, “The caged bird proves nothing but the power of the captor,” (2). The quote used by the girl, represents Barry the bird and Moira the captor and that Moira has more power which is causing Barry to be powerless. Furthermore, Barry’s anxiety makes him believe that Moira will confront him angrily. Moira says, “I’m smoking dope, six joints a day, and sniffing coke and participating in orgies,” (2). Barry causes himself to believe that if confronted Moira will say his worst nightmares, that she is doing drugs. In conclusion, Barry’s anxiety and confusion raising Moira causes him to have false beliefs and seek others advice.…

As my eyes struggled to adjust to the bright florescent light beaming from the kitchen I realized that it was no more than 6 am. "Well hello there drunkie!" an annoyingly screechy male voice yells from the kitchen. Confused and still a little disoriented I ignored whatever asshole decided to wake up at such a god awful hour. I had noticed he was wearing spandex and a bandana so that shed some light on why anyone would be up so early after a night of drinking. After lying there for around 30 more minutes, I finally decided I might as well get up seeing as how most of the house was waking up top 40's crap coming from the stereo. Eventually the rest of the house gathered in the kitchen and the stories of the night before started to unravel. Luckily, I wasn't on the topic of discussion (aka I wasn't the drunkest) so I decided to start drinking again since I was on vacation. Bad idea.…

In Josephs Boyden’s book Three Day Road, I got to read about the transformation of three main characters; Xavier, Elijah and Niska. As individuals we see these three go through change because of the events they experience in WWI. Elijah deals with the struggle of keeping in touch with his native background. Xavier challenges the urge to give into the morphine, along with the peer pressure to be someone he’s not by the people he’s surrounded by.…

Many times the protagonists become the victims of the story and are eventually defeated. This is the case in Joseph Boyden’s Three Day Road. The protagonist, Xavier Bird, is the victim and is eventually defeated by the powers and doings of the people that he encounters during the war, and also by the uncontrollable forces that act upon him during the course of the war. Ultimately, these two factors overpower him and lead to his emotional defeat.…

Arthur Joseph Boyden represents Carl Jung’s idea that humans often create a persona in order to be perceived by society in a certain way through the journey of the main character in the novel ‘Three Day Road’. Joseph Boyden illustrates the idea that war may impact someone to become something they initially weren’t. That being said, World War I, Aboriginal sniper Elijah Weesageechak becomes mentally and physically corrupted by the war, which results to his inevitable death. Further more, the loss of identity, his desire to become a war hero, and the use of morphine to escape reality caused Elijah Weesageechak to become a motionless killer.…

To take the life of another man is considered to be a great sin, however when placed in a war setting, the inverse is true. When one thinks of a hero, they imagine a man of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities. In the eyes of a country during war, these deeds and noble qualities relate directly to the amount of enemy kills a man acquires. War evokes the cruelty and immorality within a man and his country causing the definition of hero to be altered. Although upon their return, soldiers are placed on a pedestal, they are continuously reminded of the pain and suffering that they condemned their enemy to during combat. The novel Three Day Road by Joseph Boyden, is a haunting tale of how different people cope with the horrors of war and how this diversity can drive them apart. The two main characters Elijah Weesageechack (Whiskeyjack) and Xavier Bird, young Cree Indian men, leave their home in the bush to defend their country’s honour. In this story, the reader is able to see how Elijah’s personality evolves from a respectful bush Indian who lives off the land, into a cold-blooded killer. As the novel progresses, it becomes evident to a great extent that the qualities which make Elijah heroic in the eyes of his country, are also the cause of his suffering and destruction. These qualities include his ability to kill, his need for inclusion by his peers, and his addiction to morphine. Had it not been for these qualities, Elijah might have been able to survive the war and remain true to himself maintaining his morals.…

Joseph Bodyen’s, Three Day Road is about survival and difficulties of an Indian soldier on WW1 after returning home. In one situation when Elijah explaining Xavier about their returning home he says, “This is war. This is not home. What’s mad is them putting us in trenches to begin with. The madness is to tell us to kill and to award those of us who do it well” (Bodyen 322). The line shows that with the orders from their superiors the soldiers went into the battlefield and killed innocent people to serve their nations. The Protagonist Xavier is called by different names in different contexts of the novel to reveal relationship, military and honour. Xavier was addressed as Nephew, X and Elijah. Nephew represents the culture, X represents an unknown name or a mystery and Elijah shows a mistake and an honour. The name is used to show the different dimensions of the protagonist in the story.…

“Life is all memory except for the one present moment that goes by so quick you can hardly catch it going” -Williams. Memory plays an important role in one’s life; it is also one of the main themes of the two texts “Three Day Road” by Joseph Boyden, and “Simple Recipes” by Madeleine Thein. The role of memory in the two stories is played from the start to the end, and they are made up by memories. Memory has created a unique feeling in the formation of the two stories. It is obvious that the use of memory telling through the two contexts Three Day Road and Simple Recipes creates a way of healing and purifying the characters’ heart, further falls deep in connection to the characters.…

Like all things in life, there will always be standouts. We see the examples of the Olympic athlete, the world-renowned singer, the jaw dropping sports car or even the perfect weather. The word we use for them is “unique”. But what makes these things or people so unrivalled? It is their personal qualities that make them so prominent, and without these qualities they would be no different from any other. And, although difficult, it is possible to create even novels that are remarkable. The story of Xavier, Elijah and Niska and their tales of war, home and ancient traditions, is surely of the most unique novels ever written, and should be considered an unsurpassed gem. The Three Day Road by Joseph Boyden is a compelling story due to its unique qualities of both aboriginal and Canadian perspective, its variation of distinct and raw settings, it’s stark realism and powerful description, and finally its tangled relationships between the 3 main protagonists.…

The morning went so fast, I was slightly nervous about seeing Josie again since it had been three months since our last encounter. I put on a t-shirt and shorts on then stood in front of the mirror as I splashed my face with water. I looked at the clock and saw it was 11:50 so I grabbed my helmet and jacket as I pushed my motorcycle out the garage. It wasn’t until I got to the street before Subway that I realised my phone had fallen out of my pocket and I had left my wallet at home. I knew then I was going to be late and Josie was going to…

Out of boredom, and despite the doctor’s orders of rest, I rode my bike around the park. The ride was lovely, but left me unfortunately bedridden. In hindsight, this was my worst idea of the day. One painful drive home led me back to the books and kitten. I didn’t feel terribly disconnected until I knew Adult Swim would be coming on. I plugged in my alarm clock, dreading the mass of text and voice messages I would wake up to. What a mass it…
