Response to Documentary: “Addicted to Plastic” This documentary enlightened me on how plastic influences our lives. For instance, in the beginning of the film the filmmakers mention that they wouldn’t have been able to create to movie if it wasn’t for plastic. Almost everything we use has plastic or plastic residue in it.
I believe that it’s going to take a very long time until we can be completely weaned off plastics. I also believe that we will never be able to get rid of plastics in the oceans. The moment the film showed the buildup in our oceans, I was shocked. If all that grime was at the surface, I can’t imagine how much plastic has accumulated at the bottom. However it was nice to see that people do try and help clean up the

Every year, more than 300 million tons of plastic is made, this poses as a threat when you take a look at how much of this plastic is only intended to be used once and thrown away. Throughout the entire planet, plastics are being used more often and are being thrown away rather than using the recycling bin. When you throw these plastics away, they are taken to a landfill which often times will bury the garbage underground; nevertheless, although you can no longer see the plastic waste, it is still taking a toll on our health. Burying these products creates issues with the ground water that we humans, as well as our pets and other animals, drink from. When the plastics are buried in landfills, they have the potential to leak harmful chemicals into the ground water. Not only do these plastics effect our ground water, but they often times will find their way to the ocean if the landfill is found near a beach. The trash that has found its way to an ocean can float for thousands of…

How does it feel during a storm or while looking at trash? Plastic: A Toxic Love Story tells about garbage that washes up along a shoreline, and how the author feels about it. "A Dirge" tells about how nature sounds during a storm. It also explains how everything sounds very sad by saying, "Grief too sad for a song". Both of the story's themes are alike by the way that the authors are describing each story.…

The most effective way to stop plastic pollution in our oceans is to make sure it never reaches the water in the first place. We all need to do our fair share to stop plastic pollution: individuals need to recycle and never litter, but producers of single use plastic packaging need to do more too. We need producers to design packaging so that it is fully recyclable, and so there is less waste. We also need producers to help cover the costs of keeping their products out of the ocean.…

The Twentieth century was filled with many inventions that have greatly influenced our world. The invention of plastic was one of the most dramatic of them all. Humans use plastics each and every day and just imagining a day without them is inconceivable. A material can be a plastic if it satisfies three conditions: its main ingredient must be a polymer material, it must be fluid at some point during processing, and it must be solid in its final form. (Stevens) In our ever-changing world, plastics have improved in areas such as: standards of living, health care, and education. Although plastics are so important, they are posing environmental hazards to our world. Three factors that affect how environmentally friendly something is are renewability, degradability, and production. (Stevens) However, there is a new type of plastic being pursued called green plastic or bio plastic. It is an alternative to the oil based plastics and there is an increasing interest in it because of what it has to offer. All in all, when comparing the two types it is evident that green plastics are better than conventional oil based plastics due their less harmful affects on the environment.…

Each year, more and more bags are ending up littering the environment. Once they become litter, plastic bags find their way into our waterways, parks, beaches, and streets, and plastic bags also clog water bodies, canals. And, if they are burned, they infuse the air with toxic fumes. One of the worst environmental effects is they are non-biodegradable. “The decomposition takes about 400 years. No one will live so long to witness decomposition of plastic.” (Rita Putatunda, December…
