Reflective Account
Reflective Account – Poster Presentation.
This reflective account is regarding my involvement within a group to produce an academic poster presentation.
My feeling when we were initially told we had to do a presentation was; please no! and my heart immediately sank! This was one main worry I had when I was accepted into university but I knew I had to overcome this fear.
A few sessions ago, we all decide which groups were going to work together. I was pleased with who I was working with as we all seemed to share the same views and we all contributed ideas on what we should produce our poster on. We discussed several topics and then narrowed them down to: * free University places for all * free nursery places * Inequalities in higher education
Deborah, one of the girls in the group mentioned her friend was studying a Masters degree within education. A topic within this was Scandinavian education with a link to high suicide rate of students, this became of interest to the group. With all the ideas running around in our heads it made us consider Scandinavian Education. As we all had different roles with our jobs in education, we then narrowed it down to our particular expertise. My role was to research secondary education as I work in a secondary school as a Teaching Assistant. Other topics being researched were early years by Louise as she worked with the younger children, Behaviour within schools by Deborah as she worked in a PRU and Results which was researched by Sarah. The group as a whole decided to research this topic along with the others we narrowed down for when we next meet and see if we had any ideas to offer.
When it came to researching and reflecting on our chosen topics, we felt there was too much information to consider and it became difficult to gather information especially for myself and Deborah. The difficulties I came across were the differences of children’s age when they enter into education. Children in Scandinavia do not enter into education until they are seven and they leave at 16. As Louise was covering the early stages of education I would have interfered with her research and probably repeated many points. Deborah also mentioned she was not able to find much information regarding the behaviour within schools.
After discussing the negatives and positives of the chosen topic, there was a common theme of Finland throughout. We all agreed and decided to pursue Finnish Education as our presentation. When it came to finally being in agreement of this topic, we took key points from the research we gathered and drafted out a poster. I wanted to do really well on this as it was our first presentation and I had taken a lot of time to research and meet with the group regularly, as did everyone.
Two weeks ago, Aaron who is also on our course did not have a group to join so we asked did he want to come and contribute to ours. He pointed out that he was confident in producing a poster on power point which was a relief for me really as it is not one of my strong points. It was like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders. We talked through our chosen presentation with Aaron and informed him what information we would like to put on the poster. I feel it was important for Aaron to know the background and the information we had researched. It would help him to understand what he was going to produce the poster on and why we had chose the topic we did.
The next step in the production of the poster was to distribute key points from the presentation and elaborate on them. Keys points included * Investments (Aaron) * Standard of teaching (Louise) * School timings (Deborah) * Class sizes (Myself) * Autonomy (Sarah) * Free school meals (All) * Students ranked by top performers (All)
As you can see from the points above we all have a chosen topic to discuss and elaborate on throughout the presentation. Where I have put (All) next to a key point we will all have an input and contribute to this area. This is to ensure we all have equal participation throughout. As the poster presentation is not for another two weeks I still have time to perfect my short speech and ensure it is done to the best of my ability.

I am feeling quite anxious at the thought of having to speak out even though I have done presentations before. I need to work a little more on my confidence and not be afraid of what others may think. I must remember to speak clearly and not to speak too fast as this will stumble the flow of my speech and is what I tend to do in these situations. This is how I deem it anyway! Each and every person is probably feeling some sort of anxiety as it is only natural for us to feel this way. I believe the group as a whole has worked extremely hard together and all donated something constructive to the presentation. I and the entire group have met on several occasions, in our own time and before lectures to discuss and produce our poster which I feel is commitment. I just hope that all our hard work we have put in to produce this poster is reflected in the feedback. Whether the feedback is positive or on points we need to improve for the next time we can only learn from what we do. We shall wait and see!

Felicia, I like your discussion board. I think your discussion board is very interesting. In your discussion board, Felicia you stated that you would like to lead a support group in which the group members will share their feelings with any issues or concerns. In a support group, “groups enable members to learn that other people struggle with the same problems, feel similar emotions, and think similar thoughts, and the role of the leader in a support group is to encourage sharing among participants” (Jacobs, Schimmel, Masson, & Harvill, 2015, p.15). In a support group, the leader needs work toward their goals and know each participants strengths and weakness.…

On an occasion at work I was aware of a staff member communicating very negatively, for example sighing and tutting and general negativity. Supervision was due so it was brought into meeting that last had concerned had noticed a change in the person’s general attitude, I asked if there was a specific reason and was told there was not. Although they agreed that they were being negative. We discussed the workload and it was decided it was not that. It was mentioned by the staff member that they were feeling a little unsure of how to deal with a service user who had dementia and was unpredictable and seemed to have taken a dislike to the staff member .We discussed at length the way forward and I arranged for some training in challenging behaviour and dementia. The staff member realised she could not avoid the service user and that if she had mentioned her concerns sooner the problem would not have escalated. She tried to hide her feelings but they were shown in a different way. I agreed to mentor and support the staff member with the service user helping her to find an appropriate approach, the service user was feeding on the negative behaviour of the staff .In a few weeks the situation was improved undoubtedly and the staff member is more positive and no longer showing any sign of negativity. I recorded everything we had discussed and we both signed it. At the following supervision the staff had been on a training workshop and was awaiting further news of more. She mentioned previously that she felt it was a weakness in her that is why she had tried to cover it up but since our discussion and my ongoing support she would never hesitate to mention any concerns she had in the future.…

The assignment is intended to discuss a case I worked on whilst on my final placement and use an analytic stance to discuss the interaction and interventions used with the service user. In order to maintain confidentiality and anonymity of the service users in this case study I will be using pseudonyms for all people involved and mentioned in relation to this case. The assignment will demonstrate professional judgement, accountability of a social worker and the statutory requirements of protection and intervention when working with vulnerable adults. The case study will focus on my work with Sarah throughout my time on placement and assess my principal interventions as well as locating my work within the wider discourses around risk deploying both recovery and exchange models. It will also highlight the strengths and limitations within the process of recovery. Within this case study I will aim to describe and analyse the practice, theories and values that have emerged by carrying out this piece of work. The assignment will critically evaluate my practice with specific reference to the social work skills used. By reflecting on my practice I hope to demonstrate how I have considered issues such as power imbalances and social injustice and how this consideration has assisted me to work in an anti-oppressive, non-judgemental way with the service user involved. With reference to this particular case study I will also demonstrate to the reader the power imbalance that existed between the professionals in terms of their approach. This was clearly evident in relation to the social model approach versus the medical model approach. Drawing on my observation and the experience of working within an inter-professional team I will provide critical appraisal of the issues and barriers that existed. I will also compare, contrast and evaluate the medical and social model of mental health and mental disorder by referring to appropriate literature and…

Some of the negative aspects of this collaboration, were similar to difficulties previously experienced. As in any group collaborative work, not every group member contributes equally to the work, the mark is however shared. I believe that the most positive aspect from this collaboration was managing to plan multiple conference calls and meetings that successfully took place online. Although, not everyone attended the conference calls we, as a group were able to use the technology available to us, to maintain continuous access to each other.…

    Oral Presentation

As a college student it is almost a must to be able to present an oral presentation. No matter what your major is, most probabaly it requires the ability to do a nearly perfect representaion. Especially in high school, students try to do everything to avoid making a speech or an oral presentation. I can still remember my first speech back in grade 5 which went terribly wrong. Though i was far from being a shy student, i was so nervous on the day of my speech that i could not eat that morning. I was so quiet in school that my friends thought that i was maybe sick. Anyway somehow i managed to finish my speech which was from my point a view a disaster as a i mentioned before. From my own experience, i believe most students feel uncomfortable doing a speech or a presentation because they simply lack the methods of preparing and delivering an effective oral presentation. Here are some examples of what you should do before, during and after an oral presentation.…
