The aim of the Competition and Strategy course is to provide students with deep knowledge on strategic decision-making in a business environment and the strategic principles behind it. Within this course my team members Kristijan, Yaniv, George and me (Team KUGY) had the opportunity to apply our academic and theoretical understanding and knowledge in an online business simulation game, wherein we created our own car business and competed on the European car market fictionally. This paper aims to elucidate the advance of our strategic decision-making, observes the reasoning behind it and examines the following implementation of our approach.…

The business gaming community seems lately to have adopted the term business simulation game instead of just gaming or just simulation. The word simulation is sometimes considered too mechanistic for educational purposes. Simulation also refers to activities where an optimum for some problem is searched for, while this is not usually the aim of an educational game. On the other hand, the word game can imply time wasting, not taking things too seriously and engaging in an exercise designed purely for fun. The concept of simulation gaming seems to offer the right combination and balance between the two.Simulation gaming is also the term that the educational gaming community has adopted.…

This article summarizes the major insights collected in a retrospective comparative analysis of eight strategic projects in which ‘policy gaming’ was the major methodology. Policy gaming uses gaming-simulation to assist organizations in policy exploration, decision making and strategic change. The process combines the rigor of systems analysis and simulation techniques with the creativity of scenario building and the communicative power of role-play and structured group techniques. Reality is simulated through the interaction of role players using non-formal symbols as well as formal, computerized sub-models where necessary. The technique allows a group of participants to engage in collective action in a safe environment to create and analyse the futures they want to explore. It enables the players to pre-test strategic initiatives in a realistic environment. Gaming/simulation proves an appropriate process for dealing with the increasing complexity of organizational environments and the problems of communication within complex organizations and their networks.…

In February 2016 my team and I partook in the MEGA business simulation, a game in which teams take over different struggling car manufacturers in order to right the ship and compete against each other. The simulation consisted of a set amount of periods which I saw as turns in a game. For each turn we had to make decisions on what to do with your team’s company. These decisions were then put in an excel sheet and the results were often known the next day. The goal of business simulations is to learn while also having fun. The learning part is done by emulating real projects, in this case each team took over the board of a company. According to (Scarbrough, et al., 2003) Projects, and thus by proxy simulations, offer great opportunities to engage in learning and acquiring reflective habits that can be helpful beyond the scope of the project.…
