Reflecting On Wisdom
“Wisdom is a deep understanding and realization of people, things, events or situations, resulting in the ability to apply perceptions, judgments and actions in keeping with this understanding” (Wikipedia, 2012). Wisdom personifies a particular kind of knowledge, intelligence, and judgment concentrated on the behavior of an honorable life. Wise people have cultured life’s most important teachings. The broad scope of people’s understanding includes the uncertainties of life— that is, knowing what cannot be definitively known. Wisdom is not that of someone well educated, but that of one whom retains the ability of a happy and healthy life.

Reflecting off of what I see as a wise person, I had a role model to display it all. My mother, not just a knowledgeable woman due to education, but life experiences has made her wise and insightful. She is the back bone of my entire family and extended out into many more others. The characteristics she exposes are so insightful and calming. My mother uses the experiences she has encountered and others that her mother passed along and instills them into other’s experiences. I find the traits that my mother has makes her a wise woman because many of the advice she has given has resulted in rewarding outcomes. Growing up in a home with my mother and my grandmother (my mother’s mom) by my side has passed along attributes into my own habits. I find that rather than making decisions off of just knowledge, I use common sense. I did not always wait for an opportunity to come knocking; I went and knocked on the opportunity myself. There are times that I may need a helping hand, I honorably except that help, rather than turn it away. Although, I find that there are times I am a bit stubborn and my pride gets in the way, I respectfully accept what others have to give. Being open to greater knowledge from another’s experiences is what

    1. Analyze the following ethical dilemma from the perspective of rationality and respect (Dilemma Tucker & Marcuson, 1998). A local nonprofit organization that networks with other service agencies in the area was designed to fill gaps in needed services for families. This agency has been in existence for several years and has gained the respect of the community. The staff of this agency can serve families who have a need that cannot be served in any other way through connecting these families with community volunteers who adopt them. The volunteer director of the agency works on a volunteer basis and contributes numerous hours each week to fulfill responsibilities associated with this position. To reduce her workload, the director of the agency applied to seven different foundations to request money for a part-time administrative assistant. The agency requested $10,000 from each of the foundations, with the hope that they would receive assistance from one of them. To the surprise of the director, three of the foundations accepted their proposal and awarded the agency with $10,000 for the salary of the part-time employee. The agency ended up with $30,000, which was three times as much as was needed for the salary. The granting foundations had different requirements for reporting on the use of the money. However, at least two of the foundations asked that the money be used in the manner for which it was requested.…

Hi Melinda. Similar to you, I think my mother is the wisest out of all my relatives, friends, and acquaintances. It states, “Wisdom deals with important or difficult matters of life and human condition” (Kali & Cavanaugh, 2015) and your mom is definitely a great example of wisdom. Stating all of her obstacles, especially choosing to go back to school and at the same time working fulltime as well as raising a child, definitely tested her limits but she pulled through it, which is a great example of good judgment and knowledge. Anyways, I can definitely relate with you about the stubborn part. We sometimes tend to not want to listen to our elders, or get told what to do, but they have probably lived through it already so we should stop and…

There are two perspectives of knowing. Ishi seemed to understand the difference between knowledge and wisdom, which is essential in understanding why he claimed the human race is “smart but not wise”. Knowledge (smarts) is a noun that encompasses information, understanding and skills that one gains through experience or education. Knowledge in other terms is the facts and data that are available to anyone who has the resources. Wisdom is a noun that encompasses the ability to make sensible decisions and give good advise because of the experience and knowledge that you have. Someone may have the knowledge about a subject but may not have the wisdom to utilize this knowledge properly to be able to act in a sensible…

In my life it seems that one person always gave me great advice my grandfather lived a long time and was wise. Grandpa was the go to person for when I have a life issue. My grandfather is a very wise man. He has learned lessons from life he served in Korea and Vietnam. He would always tells us grandkids and great grandkids that everything happens for a reason; a reason to learn from. My grandfather’s name is Robert and he lived a very interesting life he served in the Army for a long time I think it was something like 30 years. Grandpa always had a reason behind everything he did. He always helped me by talking through my problems with a logical and reasoning view. Grandpa has always helped me to look at both sides of a problem and the possibilities of outcomes and apply things that I already know to the situation before making a decision. Grandpa always has listened to what I have to say and he isn’t against taking advice from me. He always says that he values my input and he will store it in his knowledge bank for future reference. Grandpa is very humorous along with being logical, he always seems to be able to make light of most situations and can help me look at things from a humorous side and if I end up making a bad decision. (Normally, because I didn’t go to grandpa about it before hand.) The best advice I have ever gotten from my grandfather is, when you are making a decision think about 6 months from now, or even 6 years, what is the outcome from both sides; and can you learn from your choice either way? Throughout his years grandpa has always held a positive mind frame and laced life with humor, he always asks what I learned even if I faced a consequence. I believe that my grandfather is one of the wisest men I will ever know. Grandpa always learns and uses past knowledge before making a decision. Grandpa always had been there it help me with his wisdom and knowledge of life’s great lessons. I joined the army 10 years…

I would like to contribute my ethics to having great role models within my family. I come from strong figures, who take no nonsense, work hard and do the right thing because it is what you do. We take the lessons they teach us for granted and then don’t know how to teach the next generation. Luckily, for me, I had those teachers and when making a decision I often think “What would they do?”. It isn’t about being liked or making the most well received decision it is about making the right decision.…

    Wisdom: Virtue and People

My friend Lili is probably the only person who I could really turn to for advice and her wisdom and knowledge has always helped me through the rough times and the good times. I remember meeting Lili one day at school and asked if I could borrow a pencil from her during math class. When I returned it back she said I could have it but to try not to lose it since it is an obvious writing instrument to have. Well, after a few days I noticed she would sit alone during lunch time so I asked her if she wanted to join my friends and I for lunch, ever since we have been best of friends. According to my reading in my Positive Psychology books in Ch. 10 Table 10.2 Classification of virtues and character strengths wisdom and knowledge is cognitive strengths that entail the acquisition and use of knowledge. The defining strengths describe her or what she possesses: creativity, curiosity, open-mindedness, love of learning, and perspective.…

Encouragement and wisdom has always been something I’ve had, but once I accepted Christ, it just became clearer. I have always been the friend in a situation to help those who are struggling and want to see that everything is worked out for the best. I have always wanted to make sure that those I care about are happy and that they get along. I am always the friend that will hear each side and work through the problem and try to find a resolution that can be good for both sides. I feel that wisdom and often goes along with encouragement. Wanting to work through a situation and making sure that if someone needs encouragement in a bad time of their life, wisdom can very easily go along with that. Knowing the best way to work out a problem between people and knowing how each side feels is important for everything to work out for the best. I always feel better too knowing that my friends and those I care about are happy…

Although one can argue that knowledge and wisdom are similar, they have been proven to be very different. Knowledge and wisdom cannot be considered similar or else a person might have a bad outlook on life. “Never mistake knowledge for wisdom. One helps [a person] make a living; the other helps [a person] make a life,” said Sandra Carey. Knowledge is nothing but facts that can help a person to know what to do in their life, but wisdom is how a person uses that knowledge to benefit oneself and others (Steup). There are many different definitions of wisdom although they all relate to each other in a way. Wisdom is the knowledge and understanding of the ultimate goals and values of life and how to reach these ultimate goals in the best way possible for all. Wisdom is the knowledge of how to live well. Many believe that knowledge is required to have wisdom, whereas some say that even the most knowledgeable people are not wise (Ryan). It is possible to distinguish knowledge and wisdom through learning and then using that knowledge to apply it to experience.…

Some say wisdom and intelligence apply to different types of problems—wisdom to human problems and intelligence to abstract ones. But that isn't true. Some wisdom has nothing to do with people: for example, the wisdom of the engineer who knows certain structures are less prone to failure than others. And certainly smart people can find clever solutions to human problems as well as abstract ones. [2]…

    the wisdom and knowledge

Though knowledge and wisdom may seem alike, they are really very different. They actually only have two things in common - they both involve the mind and both are hard to acquire. Someone who has knowledge would know that a tomato is a fruit, but someone who had wisdom would know not to put them in a fruit salad. Anyone can obtain knowledge about anything, but only some can use that knowledge and apply it in the best way.Knowledge' is information of which someone is aware. Knowledge is also used to mean the confident understanding of a subject, potentially with the ability to use it for a specific purpose'Wisdom' is the ability to make correct judgments and decisions. It is an intangible quality gained presumably through experience.Wisdom, the goal for which Govinda seeks, is a manner of living, a capacity, and not an object which one can isolate and capture in thoughts. This is Siddhartha's second lesson: while knowledge is communicable, but wisdom is not. No one can tell you where to find wisdom; it simply comes when you are ready to receive it. Siddhartha's third lesson is that words are deceptive, which he expresses in the paradoxical phrase that "in every truth the opposite is equally true"Many people mistake knowledge for wisdom because they are intimately related, and this is unfortunate because they are quite different in an important way. Knowledge is the accumulation of facts and information. Wisdom is the synthesis of knowledge and experiences into insights that deepen one’s understanding of relationships and the meaning of life. In other words, knowledge is a tool, and wisdom is the craft in which the tool is used.…
