Reasons Why Smoking Should Be Banned in Public Places.
Essay: Reasons why smoking should be banned in public places.

Tobacco is one of the most widely-used drugs in the world, mainly in the form of cigarettes. Although most countries put restrictions on its use, many people smoke everyday despite the fact that it is poisonous and harmful to their health. In my opinion, smoking should be banned completely for several reasons.
Firstly, smoking can cause serious health problems to the smokers themselves and to those inhaling secondhand smoke. Tobacco smoke contains many harmful subtances including a lot of carcinogens and nicotine which is addictive. Smoking can cause cancer, emphysema and heart disease. It can also shorten your life by up to ten years or more. Inhaling secondhand smoke for even brief periods can be deadly. Studies show that exposure to cigarette smoke for as little as thirty minutes a day can raise a non-smoker's risk of suffering a fatal heart attack. The danger is even greater for those who are already at a higher risk of coronary problems such as men over forty, pre-menopausal women or anyone who is obese, has diabetes or high blood pressure.
Secondly, apart from health hazards, being forced to breathe tobacco smoke is annoying and irritating to most people, especially people who have chronic conditions like asthma and bronchitis, which make them susceptible to tobacco smoke, and young children who are very sensitive to cigarette smoke. It should be noted that many activities, such as playing loud music, engaging in sexually provocative activity, dressing in inappropriately scanty attires, are banned in public places simply because they are annoying and irritating.
In addition, discarded cigarette butts can be a big problem. Cigarette butts constitute the overwhelming majority of litter in many public places such as parks, beaches, sidewalks. Smoking ban have substantially reduced the litter and therefore the costs of cleaning up these places, as well as improving the overall appearance and

With this being a known fact there are still smokers in today’s world. The question that should be asked is why do people smoke cigarettes despite their proven dangers? In the United States, for every eight smokers that die from tobacco use, one non-smoker dies as well (Clarke 2010). In recent years, a growing awareness of the deadly effects of smoking has led to the enactment of tobacco control policies throughout the industrialized world. Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable death worldwide (Jones 2009) estimating that one billion people are expected to die during the 21st century as a result of tobacco-related disease”(Cole 2012). Secondhand smoke (SHS) contains hundreds of toxic chemicals and is linked to cause cancer, coronary heart disease, and respiratory problems. Innocent individuals of all ages should not be impacted by the poor choices of smokers around them. After all, there is no risk-free level of exposure to someone else’s drifting smoke. The debate on smoking bans has rose significantly in the pass two decades. There are two types of bans, partial and full smoking bans. Full bans make it illegal to smoke in any public area. Although smoking is seen to be a personal right to many Americans, smoking should be banned in all public places. As a result the ban will overall reduce health risks, change smoking behavior in workplaces and improve the economy.…

For several decades, smoking remains one of the most common and most unhealthy of human habits. Smoking, specifically in public, had generally been regarded as a personal choice that bystanders had little control over. Now for the first time, the act of public smoking is becoming regulated, even restricted in many cities worldwide. The city of Columbia has recently implemented a ban on smoking in efforts to reduce the negative effects of smoking on employees and customers of restaurants and bars. The issue is that smoke directly affects everyone in the vicinity of a public place, restaurant or bar. Based on the evidence that a ban on smoking prevents secondhand smoke, deters the unhealthy habit of smoking, does not affect business in similar cities, the city of Columbia should retain its ban on smoking in restaurants and bars.…

There are many reasons why smoking in public should be banned. The three main reasons to ban smoking in public are because of the health risks, offensive smell, and environmental risks that are the cause of cigarette smoke. Secondhand smoke is smoke from a cigarette, cigar, or pipe that is involuntarily inhaled, especially by non-smokers (The American Heritage Stedman’s Medical Dictionary, n.d.). In many public places smoking is allowed and is not fair because non-smokers are exposed to chemicals that can harm them internally and externally. Children for example, are chronic victims of secondhand smoke. The inhalation of cigarette smoke that can harm people nearby is called passive smoking (Pros Vs. Cons, 2007, p.1). Also cigarette smoke can make non-smokers agitated by the smell of cigarette smoke, which is not very pleasant. Also the environment is tainted by the hazardous chemicals, which can cause permanent scars on the earth. For the most part, smoking in public should be banned to help decreases its negative affects.…

We have a right to clean air and to a safe environment, smoking should be banned in public places for many reasons, including the fact that it is a huge health risk for both smokers and non-smokers. We find smoking to be irritating for a number of reasons. The smell of smoke is awful, it clings to your clothing, and it affects the breath of the smoker harshly. Smoke in the air is also irritating to the eyes, causing them to water and itch. Personal hygiene is affected too: smoke stains your teeth and can cause sores inside the mouth. Smoking, simply put, just looks stupid. Smokers whether they like it or not, are criticized and judged daily by strangers just for having a cigarette in their mouth. Frankly, we believe smoking to be a complete waste of the time spent smoking and the money.…
