“Radio”

The movie I picked to review was one I had not seen before, “Radio” starring Cuba Gooding Jr and Ed Harris. It is based on a true story of James Robert “Radio” Kennedy and tells the story of how a man who is mentally retarded becomes friends with the high school football coach. The coach befriends Radio after some of his players have bullied and hurt him.
The movie opens with Radio pushing his cart through the street and shows a woman moving her child away from him, a man staring at him, and another man who almost runs him over calling him a “moron.” I liked that they started this way to establish what he goes through on a daily basis. Radio is constantly looking down allowing the viewer to realize that he has some sort of disability. Other times throughout the movie members of the town can be seen starring and laughing at Radio. The coach ignores their behaviors and continues his friendship with Radio despite what others think.
The film never establishes the exact cause of his disability but when Coach asks his mother what was wrong with him, she says the doctor just says “he is a little slower than most.” As the coach got to know him, he learned that he loved radios, hence his nickname “Radio”. The coach tries to bring Radio into the team as an assistant. The school didn’t allow him to travel on the bus for the “safety” of the students. As the movie continues some of the townspeople begin to accept Radio while others are very irritated that he is a part of the football program. Coach always supports Radio and teaches him many things throughout their friendship. The coach’s family also comes to appreciate Radio and supports the friendship of the two men. The things that impacted me about the movie are the fact that it is based on a true-life story. The filmmakers did a good job of being realistic in the fact that not everyone is going to support a mentally challenged individual all of the sudden being a part of a

Based on a true story, the movie Radio follows a young man named James Robert Kennedy. It opens up showing a bit of insight in his life as he walks through town with a cart avoiding eye contact, insults, and speaking to others. He gets called a moron by a man, and children are shooed away in the first few minutes. It is clear he is different from the people he is around as he walks daily with a cart full of his things and his radio. Walking past the football field like usual, he one day stumbles upon a football thrown over the fence, and when he doesn’t listen to a players demands to return it he again gets insulted called “dummy” He makes gestures by waving his hands in the air, specifically his right one, and makes no eye contact. He acts as if he cannot hear what he has been told and makes no effort to talk. He shows obvious signs of an intellectual disorder. The first incident that happens in the movie is when he is bullied and taped up, thrown in a shed by the football player who called him a dummy and some team members. When the football coach, Coach Jones, finds him he’s terrified and runs away from the crowd as fast as possible. He displays more traits of his disorder by appearing a bit socially awkward. As the movie progresses Coach Jones takes him under his wing, inviting him to practices and even noticing his infatuation with radios enough to give him the nickname Radio. Radio visits daily practices and games, and becomes a friend of much of the team. Coach Jones gets him to talk more, interact, and even begins teaching him at school in a classroom. Radio is ecstatic about sports and shows his love of his friends and school. However, Radio’s stability is questioned by residents of the town and his previous bully’s father when the death of his mother strikes and he is left alone in the home. The connection he has come to share with Coach Jones is proven after Radio’s mother dies and the coach is the only one…

The movie was very powerful just to learn about hate crime and how it attracted a lot of attention from media as well as public all over the world due to his tragic death. Matthew was the type of person that was very approachable and always put his family and friends first. Even though the death of Matthew Shepard was undeserved I definitely think that some good has come out of it because it made people realize how much violence and hatred there in the world and what it can turn into. This tragedy helped the nation wake up to the fact that hate and discrimination still lives in our communities, schools and families. Mr. Dennis Shepard gave speech in tribute to his son Matthew brought tears in my eyes. I was able to connect and engage to that moment. That moment touched me so much that I couldn’t stop crying.…

In my opinion, I though the film was powerful and overwhelming at times. As, the public figures and political activists gave a lot of information. Analyzing the film, you see how America’s complex prison system affects people of color. It is shocking. Because despite living in a country that gives liberty to all…

There were tons of key moments that impacted me and once that just did not make a big dent. I already listed a few moments that had a negative effect on me. The International Sign Language Theatre Festival towards the end of the film was amazing. I wish I could have gone, there were different acts from around the world, different types of acts, and a great thought. It was interesting to the different types of sign language across the world. It is similar to speaking, for example, certain countries have different type of language and that is the same with signing. Its inspirational characters and messages really made me think deeper into deaf culture. I wanted to learn more about deaf culture and more signing than just American Sign Language. The four many characters all touched my heart in different ways. Robert, the actor, no matter…

To know that he was capable of moving and getting through all the setbacks that arise makes me feel like I’m capable of enduring any challenges in life. For him to constantly get rejected even by his family shows how strong of an individual he is. It seem like he went through everything that you could go through to create a successful movement from the strikes to the grape boycott to the fast that he endured for 25 days. For someone with the health that he already have last 25 days without food really shows what someone is capable of doing when there mind is set on the goal. The film overall taught me a lot about the Mexican culture and the things that they went through throughout their history in California. I now have a different perspective on farm workers and what it takes to be able survive such horrific circumstances. The presentation made me feel as if I don’t know as much as I should know about history for every race and class throughout our history. This occurred not that long ago and is still an issue in the United States today. We see numerous people working for starvation wages that cannot improve the circumstance that their almost stuck in. It inspired make a change within the area that live and make sure everyone has their rights to the basic necessities of life. It also offended me that we as a nation could treat a group…

The movie starts off with Ms. Johnson being interviewed for a job at a high school. Ms. Johnson is surprised because she is hired of the spot, but she soon finds out why they were in such a rush to find a teacher for the class. When she walks in her new classroom, she sees something she is not expecting: a wild group of students who obviously didn’t care about school. Ms. Johnson was put in a situation where she could give up, like most of the other teachers, or try to reach out these students. She chose the latter and figured out how to get to the students.…

Common powerful anthems from the 70’s are used to remind us of the era we’re in and to show the bond the music creates between the characters. Another great aspect is the way the movie does not strictly focus on football. For example, Louie Lastik (Ethan Suplee) is an obese white boy with some struggles concerning his grades. This movie shows how this issue brings Coach Boone and him together and creates a stronger relationship between them. The juxtaposition between Gerry and Julius Campbell (Wood Harris) is intriguing from the beginning of the movie to the end. When the boys first meet, they quickly clash and pretty much hate each other. However, when Gerry becomes paralyzed, he is only calling for one person – his “brother”, Julius. There is one thing about the movie I did not like, though. At the end, when everyone is at Gerry’s funeral, they made that scene very brief. They should’ve milked that scene a tad bit more to make the audience really feel the characters grief.…

This movie shows how most people can react when they lack knowledge of mental illness. They seem to develop a fear of the unknown that leads them to a poor attitude on the subject of mental illness. I feel that the study of mental illness and its relationship with society can go a long ways if people would just take the time to truly research and find solutions as to how to fight stereotypes and how to educate society. It’s time that mental illness stop being used as a scapegoat and be recognized as a real struggle in today’s society.…
