Are Professional Athletes Overpaid?

There’s a great deal of controversy over the topic of whether professional athletes are overpaid or not, as compared to teachers, police officers, and firefighters. Jennifer Fontaine, a sports promoter, clearly states that she believes professional athletes are not over paid, due to their careers being short lived due to any serious injury, or injuries, that could end that highly paid career.
On the other hand, Roberto Hinojosa, a high school math teacher, disagrees with that statement. Roberto believes professional athletes are overpaid as compared to the salaries of public service workers, such as police officers, fire fighters, and teachers. Individuals such as these lay their lives on the line daily, and teachers motivate students towards higher learning as well as guiding willing students towards helping themselves to acquire the knowledge they need to know to become productive adults. All of these public servants are paid a great deal less, over the life span of their career. Salaries for a teacher average $50,950 a year, a police officer, $50, 512 per year, and a lead firefighter, $57,000 per year, as compared to a football player earning $32.4 million per year.

In recent years, the salaries of many professional athletes have soared, allowing them to collect millions every year for merely being on a team. Worshipped by their talent and the appeal of extreme wealth, many of these athletes do not see themselves as role models, which, in turn, affects society’s younger generation. These athletes should not receive millions of dollars a year when representatives of the law and instructors to the youth do not even make half of…

To achieve this we should employ taxes, but the money made off this should go to charity, also we should lower salary caps, thus we restrict the amounts teams can spend on their players. In this report, I will be explaining why athletes should be paid less…

Professional athletes sign huge contracts up to $20 million dollars per season, but it does not quite mean that they are overpaid. These athletes play sports for professional teams which is not that easy to get into. There is only a .03 percent chance for a college basketball player to make it into the NBA, which the chances seem nearly impossible. These athletes also have to work hard to stay in shape all year round, because their jobs depend on it. They also risk a chance of injury every time they step out onto a court, a field, or a stadium, etc. It’s also determined that NFL players lives are cut short by two or three years for each season they play. Not to mention the reason why their salaries are so high, are because of the fans who willingly support them. The premiere athletes of today’s sports can make upwards of 30 millions dollars in one year. This alone can raise some eyebrows. Now take into account that this amount of money is 75 times as much money as the President of the United States made last year. The President, by their pay, is less important than an athlete, like a LeBron James, but this couldn’t be any further from the truth. Compared to an actual beneficial job, like teaching, the athletes we gladly shell out millions of dollars for are very overpaid.…

In this paper, I will be discussing the research question, “Are professional athletes overpaid?” After researching the topic, I came up with the conclusion that professional athletes are not overpaid based on the amount of money that they bring into their organization. Other reasons for this conclusion include the following: professional athletes put in large amounts of time and dedication for their sport, professional sports are billion dollar businesses, society craves their entertainment, athletes are role models/ superheroes to young kids. Throughout the process of researching my topic, I read multiple sources discussing anything from the average career length of an athlete, to the average salary of an athlete based on his or her sport. I also interviewed a high school baseball coach to find a more professional view on the topic.…
