Communication can facilitate the development of a therapeutic relationship or serve as a barrier to block its development. Blocks are any factors that may cause the nurse consciously or unconsciously to hinder the patients expression. Therapeutic communication is to help the patient express thoughts and feelings so that his/her needs can be identified. The nurse should use the elements of the communication process and utilize specific skills or techniques. In order to do this, the nurse must have the ability, to perceive and communicate accurately and with sensitivity, the feelings of the patient and the meaning of those feelings.

    Description of Theory: “Orlando’s theory is a reflective practice that is based on discovering and resolving problematic situations” (Alligood, 2010, p. 339). This theory is focused on defining the nurse-patient relationship. According to Orlando, the main function of nursing is to determine the needs of the patient and ensure that these needs are met, whether by the nurse or by others. The patient will have verbal and nonverbal behaviors that clue the nurse into the nature of his or her problems. The nurse must explore these behaviors with the patient to determine the needs that must be met to resolve the problematic situation that the patient presents with. The nurse must also be aware of his or her reactions to the cues the patient presents and must validate these reactions with the patient. It is always possible for the nurse to misinterpret the behaviors of a patient, and form incorrect ideas about what the patient needs. Validating the behaviors with the patient ensures that the nurse can fulfill the function of nursing, which is to find and meet the patient’s immediate need for help in the immediate situation which results in improvement (Alligood, 2010). The success of the help provided can be evaluated by observing for improvement in the patient’s verbal and nonverbal behavior. These behaviors must also be validated with the patient.     In my context with the patient, it is important for me to improve the nurse-patient relationship. In this relationship, there is a sense of trust and a mutual understanding exists between a nurse and a patient that build in a special link of the relationship (Harkreader and Hogan, 2004).     Research has shown that ineffective communication between physicians and nurses can result in missed or delayed diagnosis, unnecessary or repeated testing and over prescribing of medications (Espetin, 2010). It has also been shown that poor communication between team members can have a negative effect on patients in ways of psychosocial experiences. This occurs when patients are confronted with information depending on the nature and quality of information that is transmitted to them and can also affects the enactment and outcome of the decision making process regarding treatment opinions (Thorne, Bultz & Baile, 2005). As a result, patients are often dissatisfied with the amount of knowledge they receive from medical professionals and they, in turn, express that this is an area requiring improvement (Conn, Lingard, Reeves, Miller, Russell & Zwarenstein, 2010). As noted above, poor communication between team members often results in negative outcomes not only for the team itself but also for the patients. Because communication plays a vital role in effective collaboration, healthcare providers must address potential breakdowns so as to ensure productive dialogue and to create troubleshooting strategies. The College of Nurses of Ontario website states that communication is how nurses establish and maintain their therapeutic relationships by building trust, empathy and receptivity (CNO, 2006). This information is also applied to interprofessional collaboration.     A) The communication patterns observed in our last group interaction on Wednesday March sixth, during International Women's week was a free floating pattern that involved most of the group's members. Given that our instructor was the "facilitator" of the group, the role of the leader was assumed with that role as well. The topic for discussion was, "Who is the most inspirational woman that has affected or impacted your life?". The question was asked and the first person to respond, stating that her inspirational woman would be a super hero, starting off the topic, unsure of what other relevant inspirations would come forward. The pass went to the next person, whom chose Princess Dianna, who is a well respected, caring, loving woman that during her time as Princess left a powerful impact on the life's of many women. Once the first two students spoke, the pass went with ease, with only two people passing on the whole group communication. The group members had inspirational women to speak of, the women that were fighters and survivors were talked about a little longer, with more questions being asked about their experience.…
