Politeness in the English Language
How does the English language enable us to express ‘politeness’?
The definition of politeness is ‘Having or showing behavior that is respectful and considerate of other people’(Oxford Dictionary) it is a social construct that has formulated by humans to communicate in society. They are usually taught in the home and in society through our norms and values of socialisation .Linguistically, politeness is a form of pragmatic, ‘the study of how interlocutors use their own knowledge of a language to convey and interpret meaning’ (Bloomer, Griffiths and Merrison: 468), this enforces that politeness is a form of language that previous knowledge and external influences that can affect our interpretation of what was spoken to the listener. There are many factions of politeness however, the main focus is the social interactions that may or may not be considered polite. Sociolinguistics such as Penelope Brown and Stephenson C. Levinson are the most creditable figures in studying politeness, ‘Politeness: some universals in language usage’ what this particular text introduces is that politeness is versatile and differs from culture, to culture. The study of politeness enables the understanding of the relationship between speaker and listener. Study’s such as J Holmes’ ‘Women. Men and Politeness’ also represent how politeness differs between genders and what is expected from women and men in society. Academic texts such as ‘introducing language in use’ and ‘politeness in language’ discuss the variations of politeness and how politeness operates, such as what is conceived polite and impolite. What may or may not be considered polite differs on the individual as Bloomer, Griffiths and Merriosn state ‘’it depends! More specifically, it would depend on who you are asking’ (Bloomer, Griffiths and Merrison: 109). Based on relationships and individual interpretation of politeness, what one may consider extremely rude one may think nothing of it, due to the listener’s

Steven Pinker writes, “Whenever you speak to someone, you are presuming the two of you have a certain degree of familiarity--which your words might alter. So every sentence has to do two things at once; convey a message and continue to negotiate a relationship.” People say first impressions are important, and the main way one will first impress upon another is through speech. So one has to manipulate the words they say to make oneself seem like an upstanding person. If I am meeting a new teacher or employer, I am going to be polite, kind and courteous because that is the kind of person I believe I am and want them to believe I am.…

Public manners have degenerated in recent decades. It is now routine to hear obscenities shouted in public, and by all sorts of people, not just in traffic but even in Starbucks. I am as fond of colorful language as anyone, but I try not to inflict it upon strangers. I suspect many people sense they should have better manners, and need only a nudge. In high school, I was addressed for the first time in my life as "Mister Ebert" by Stanley Hynes, an English teacher, and his formality transformed his classroom into a place where a certain courtliness prevailed.…

Throughout the semester, we have been introduced to many topics related to interpersonal communication. I have come to believe that these concepts have allowed me to better understand interactions that occur in our daily lives. My knowledge of these concepts was challenged when asked to relate these notions to a movie. During the time that I was watching the movie, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, I realized myself grasping onto what was going on and being able to relate certain scenes and situations to topics I had previously learned about. Interactions in My Big Fat Greek Wedding display concepts of conflict and politeness theory, which can be pointed out in a few specific scenes.…

You know that one person that bumps into you but doesn’t have the common courtesy to say excuse me or I’m sorry they just keep walking like it never happened, and wonder why someone is stepping to them rudely. Or that moment you are on the freeway and lanes are merging and it seems like the driver in the next lane seems to have speed up as you are trying to fit into the merge resulting in you having to slow down even more, All though it is not getting that person any faster to their destination. Etiquette is not just about what fork to use other words it’s all about self-awareness and treating others with respect. It’s sad and unfortunate that a lot civility has gone with the wind. Rudeness is on the rise, but it has some things to do with the economy and parenting.…

Conversations between Americans today have become scripted and lost their meaning. The subtle phrases such as, “How are you?” and “Good to see you,” have become nearly automatic dialogue when people meet up. As an anthropologist found in his studies, these phrases are used to communicate politeness rather than the literal meaning of what’s being said. It’s come to the point where people will state these quaint, polite sayings while totally disregarding the other person’s response. Polite speech does make a person look respectable, but the negative effects outweigh this form of conversation. There is no point for a people to employ polite phrases if it takes away from the emotional standpoint and isn’t essential to gain another’s respect with…

Brown and Levenson’s theory is based on the existence of speakers and addressees(1987:58).Both speakers and addressees are rational agents who have something that Brown and Levenson call ‘face’. The term ‘face’ could be translated as a public self -image. The concept of face derives from earlier work by Goffman (1967) and from the English folk term used for example in the idiom of ‘losing face’ (Brown and Levenson 1987:61)…
