Personal Statement: Why More Students Should Consider Career Centers
Why More Students Should Consider Career Centers
It would be an easier transition in a student's life if they choose to attend a career center. Most students in high school plan on going to college. Students who go to college usually end up building a pile of debt, but some do not. If students went to a career center, they could start a career early in their life. Some careers need further education; however, a career center could give people a job in the career that they choose. Many students have to work a fast food job in between classes in college, and they make minimum wage while working there. A career center could not only provide a job in the career that one chooses, but it could also provide a higher wage for someone entering the

I do not mean to brag; however, it is the truth. A career center has given me an advantage over many students; students at my home school cannot receive good employment during their high school career, but I can. Having a good job can radically change someone's career situation, especially if it is in a desired field. During the first quarter of senior year I was asked by Spengler Electric for an application. I was hired shortly after. This opportunity has given me a jumpstart on my career. Before I got the job my plan was to work at McDonalds and get a degree in something. But now I have a potential life long job. I am getting paid better at my new job, and the work environment is more enjoyable. The two years that I have attended four County Career Center will account for one year of an apprenticeship, so I have already obtained a good job and I will be able to make more money faster because of the job placement. Even if the electrician trade does not work out for me, I will still have walked away with knowledge that can potentially save me thousands of dollars. A career center has impacted my life in such a positive way; it has given me a jump start on a career. This is a perfect example on how a career center can be good for …show more content…
Students need to take time and think about their future.career centers is not a place where “dumb” people go; career centers are a place where people who want to get a good job go. These schools make the transition to adulthood easier by preparing students for jobs and by getting students jobs. If someone chooses to take something in college, and they find out that they do not like it, then they have wasted their time and money. If someone chooses to take a program at a trade school, they may not like it, but at least they will have not wasted money. Also, they will have walked away with knowledge that can save them

It's a person's choice of which path they want to take in the future but without help they can choose the wrong path. As Dr. Seuss said in his poem" I'm sorry to say so but, sadly, it's true and Hang-ups can happen to you." My Perspective is that careers is a very important course in high school because it helps students discover their skills and choose the right career. Careers will show kids how to create and do different aspects of getting a job and starting a career. It will let them explore the different opportunities for them in the future and educate them to choose the career best for them. In…

“In California, 260,000 college graduates under the age of 30 are working in low paying jobs...gone to high school graduates and dropouts such as food services, retail sales, and clerical work.” Larry Cuban, a former high school teacher and 20 years as a professor at Stanford University, was partially persuasive on the idea that “everyone” shouldn’t go to college. High schools now have integrated pathways in technology and medical programs, which prepare students for middle-class jobs, by experience in early programs in high school. James Kemple, the Executive Director of the Research Alliance for NYC schools, ”.. Found that those students in career academies..who completed these programs earned more money than those who were in non-academy programs.” Cuban makes a point, academic programs are efficient because programs in Career and Technical Education (CTE) help students gain experience and prepare students for jobs that are rising in the career world. CTE programs help students from poor backgrounds and young adults to achieve skills needed in…

While still in high school CTE classes have been shown to greatly improve a student's motivation in all classes not just CTE. Also students in CTE concentrations show improved grades, academic engagement and an overall improvement in a student's efficiency. Students also have a chance to explore many career paths to see what they like or are good at before being forced into a difficult work force. Even for student who know what they would like to do CTE classes that specialize in that area can help you discover what discipline within a career they want to purse. A great example of this is a student ,who has chosen to keep their name discreet, who was inspired to become a nurse. The student had witness the Red Cross and decided to pursue nursing but was unsure of which type of nursing to undertake, but thanks to the CTE classes they took they were able to narrow down the choices, and eventually settled on going to college to be a labor and delivery nurse (TeGrotenhuis). Once out of school CTE education continues to improve the life of those who took advantage of it. A person with either an CTE- associate's degree or a CTE credential earn between 4,000- 19,000 more than their peers with a humanities associate’s degree. In addition 27% of people without an associates with CTE training make more than the average bachelor degree recipient (ACTE). So maybe some people will become a better person through college or maybe they will stay the same, but studies show that those with a college education make more money than those with only a high school diploma. Even though how much money someone makes is not always that important, it does not hurt to make enough money to send your own kids to college someday. As for how interesting someone’s work may be to them, that is entirely based on their decision in occupation rather than decision in education. And with higher education it actually gives people more choices to choose from in occupation…

High school students should think precisely about college, whether if it is worth going to a specific college they are thinking about, or the major they think or decide to major in. Every high school student should know what they are dealing with before going to college. Despite the student debt and tuition costs rising, college is worth it because you get to climb the economic ladder if you pick a good major that pays good and you can be more educated and see the world differently than others, do not be a robot!…

This option encourages all students to strive for further education since the school does not offer any classes that would be repeated in college. Instead, students would understand that attending college would provide them with additional skills needed for them to succeed in the future. In fact, learning these skills in college are even more beneficial as they focus on a certain field of study, teaching students more in-depth skills relating to their preferred area of work, rather than giving students a general overview of all the skills in high school, before students have decided on their future career plans. Despite the benefits, this option promotes failure for the students who are planning on stopping their education after high school. Without an opportunity to even learn about the skills they could be lacking, this option leaves students ignorant to the necessary skills of the workforce, causing these students to lead unsuccessful lives and contributing to an unqualified and uneducated…

Most students graduate from high school knowing what they want to persuade in life and accomplish, many other students don’t have a clue about anything they want to do nor persuade so for example, in the article The Pink Floyd Night School by Mark Edmundson, he as many other students after graduating high school didn’t know what he was going to do or study as a career, basically he had no clue of what he wanted. Life experience brought him the knowledge of knowing what he wanted to do in his career life. Edmundson uses many life experiences, as well as vivid examples to expand his argument of why he thinks students should take time off of school and about a year to just relax and figure out what career exactly do they want.…

My 4 hour observation was conducted on October 16th at Monmouth County Career Center located in Freehold, NJ. The career center is a public school system in Monmouth County that takes in 9 through 12 graders that all have some sort of an IEP condition. Once admitted to the school the students learn certain career skills, such as nursing, culinary, auto mechanic to turfgrass management. so when the time comes for the students to graduate from high school they will be able to obtain a job in the career skills they were taught. I had the pleasure to observe John Neyhart, he teaches the Horticultural classes that target on turfgrass management. I was able to observe his two classes that he teaches for the day. The morning students were…

When people first think about attending college they should realize by making this choice they are securing themselves within a career. In today’s society, the number of jobs is limited. Almost every time I look in the newspaper all jobs are now requiring some kind of training within that line of work. If people are able to find a job that requires no college or job training, they will most likely be working for minimum wage. When students chooses a career and attends college to get the education needed to fulfill that positions requirements they are giving themselves the opportunity to have a stable career throughout their lives. Attending college can be challenging and a lot of hard work; however, the payoff makes up for all the work and time spent in school. This decision can be one of the best in life because without attending school someone may be left without anything in life except meaningless jobs with no advancements.…

Lastly, if middle schools focused on careers it could help kids to set realistic goals for themselves. For example if a kid wants to be a pro football player there is a very slim chance of that happening because a very small percent of players go pro. A more realistic job is police officer because anyone can become a police officer or a firefighter. Those are realistic jobs that kids can set goals for and with work one day accomplice. Realistic goals is one of the key reasons why middle schools should focus on careers.…

When students don’t choose to attend college after graduating high school, many of them get lost on what their next step is, because there is no essential path for them to follow. While students are mostly raised without knowledge or ideas about not attending school, that is okay because, “education seems to make people happier and healthier,” (Source D) which means the practical thing to do is continue that and head off to college. “Both the cost and demand for a college education have grown significantly in the years” (Source E), so this shows that students have an interest in college, and if it really wasn’t worth the time, effort, and money, students would not have the desire to…
