Some of my duties included attending to each persons room to see how they were doing and if I could do anything to help make their stay more desirable. With my first week of clinical affiliation from the HCR ManorCare-Pittsburgh location under my belt I can give a sigh of relief that I have gained an understanding into the early expectations that my Clinical Instructor (CI) and staff have for me. From day one to current I have been asked to handle and comprehend tasks that I discovered during my academic and laboratory learning at CCAC such as goniometry, transfers, parallel bar training (to name a few). So for me being able to translate what I have learned and apply this to my inpatient setting has been invaluable. Yes, the way they document (electronically via IPad) and use of electronic stimulation placements are slightly different then what I’m accustomed my goal will be to learn these…

While visiting the College Foundation of North Carolina website I was not surprised in my answers. My Holland code was CES, meaning conventional, enterprising, an social. Also, I was able to find out my work values and they are achievement, recognition, and relationships. However, I do feel like there were more on the list that I felt were also part of my work values. I definitely feel like these relate to my degree and also my professional career. It would be very beneficial because while getting my associate and bachelor degree and then leading to my career as an Occupational Therapist it will become very helpful by being organized, working with people and helping others. At first I was very nervous to apply as a volunteer and had doubts about being hired. After a long process of applications, interviews, and trainings, I was assigned to work at 6-CD on Geriatric floor. While I was volunteering there I met with different people, nurses, doctors, and pharmacy technicians. Seeing the pace of work they work in made me realize how important it is to work in healthcare. For me, the most significant issue was to get the used to patients who have passed away. I have seen a situation where a nurse and a doctor telling a family member that their father has passed away. At first I hesitated and asked myself if I am brave enough to do the same in future. As I volunteered there I realized I got used to everything, I was able to handle…

Growing up in a small, rural town you come to know people on a very personal level. You share in their joy, their sorrow, and their struggles. Watching people who played significant roles in my life suffer because they did not get the help the needed impacted my life greatly. Observing the roles of several different healthcare professionals, I quickly came to the realization that patients in rural areas do not always receive the support they need. It wasn’t until I observed an Occupational Therapist working with my grandmother after she had a stroke that my perspective changed. I reflected while watching the Occupational Therapist work with my grandmother about the importance of what I was observing, not only for my grandmother, but for the…

One of the worst injuries that has ever occurred to me was having my fingers burned by extremely hot water. It was a cold, dark day at 7:31pm, and it was just me, my older brother, Gideon, and my younger brother, Theodore. I was 9 years old, Theodore was 2 years old, and Gideon was 12 years old. Every day I would drink some hot tea, because I tended to be extremely sensitive to the cold. And when I say sensitive, I am talking about that if I was drinking regular temperature water, I would be shivering probably throughout the rest of the night. Gideon was doing homework at the basement, while Theodore was sleeping in my parents’ bedroom. I was making myself some hot tea, when I accidentally poured hot water on my hand for 2 seconds. Now 2 seconds seem like nothing, but when something like…
