“WHOA WHOA WHOA THIS IS BALONEY MAN!” that is something I say whenever I am frustrated. People have always told me sometimes the best way to learn something is through failure. People value things they have accomplished differently. Often the people whom are naturally adept at things do not realize how much of a struggle it can be for others. Many times when people have told me that if you are going to fall, fall forward. Do not let your insecurities, doubts, and pride get in the way of improving yourself. In brief, there can always be a way to improve yourself.…
Throughout the past year I have endured several life changing occurances. One of my family members troubled through the treturous stages of cancer and unfortunately has passed at this time. If I have taken anything away from this, it is that family is the most important resource in a persons life. Without those people who tell you that you can, regardless of the circumstances, becoming succesful could be very challenging. After clearing my head, I was able to start thinking of a career choice that would make me enjoy going to work. I encountered an opening at a local CVS/Pharmacy as a Pharmacy Technician and applied. After being hired, I immediately fell in love with the surroundings, the people, the patient interaction, and the knowledge…
Many people would say that growing up with parents who could not speak english would be to my disadvantage, but I disagree. Growing up I always believed it to be exhausting having to translate and never really feeling normal. I believed it to be dragging and many times protested against it, but besides it being tiring, I also felt embarrassed. Yeah embarrassed of having to deal with my parents and not being able to communicate with them like other kids did with their parents. As I grew older the issue only grew because at that point I began to resent them for putting me through what I believed to be embarrassing moments of confusion, but all of this changed when I finally realized that my parents did the best they could with what they had.…
I am just your average teenager from Paterson New Jersey trying to make a better living for my family. Growing up in Paterson, I experienced things I should not have experienced, from deaths, drug dealing, to gang violence in my neighborhood. I come from a very big family where college was optional. But for me, I made sure to make it a priority. I come from your typical Dominican family. My parents migrated to this country in 1993 with nothing to their name. Two years later I was born. The sacrifices they made to provide a better living for me were enormous. I know the only way I can make them proud and paying them back is by being successful in my studies. It took the support of my family get here where I am right now in my life.…
The person i chose to interview was my mother, and the topic we chose was how her and my dad met. My parents were born in california, not anywhere out of california or america. It was a nice sunny day where my mom was dying of boredom, so the best thing she thought of was to go outside and explore nature.…
My heart is pounding in my chest as I am in complete awe as I realize that finally she is coming. It is one of the most thrilling events that has ever happened to me in my entire life. I don’t think one can ever be completely ready for what I was about to endure as well as the pain my body was about to be put through. The pain begins to become more alarming as stronger waves of torment flows throughout my body down to the deepest core of my being. I have to say no matter how many books or classes I have taken, nothing could prepare me for what was about to happen next. It is not something that one could ever be mentally qualified for until it is actually happening. Fourteen hours of agonizing discomfort and yet we are still waiting for her to enter into this nonsensical, yet wonderful world. At that moment, I realize once she arrives she will be completely dependent on me.…
Since I grew up in a family with an abusive father, my response to conflict differs from most people. My father resolved conflict by shouting, degrading, and often physically abusing the other person. My mother’s response to conflict was to try to settle a compromise or walk away until her own frustration was no longer there. I think based off the conflict responses I observed growing up, my responses are a mixture of my parents. When in an intense argument with someone, I attack their character and then silence them out. Family members play a big part in how we resolve conflicts, because a good portion of our lives begin by us spending time with and watching our relatives. We, as a society, adapt skills and mannerisms from those closest to…
I take pride in being a Mexican/American college student at Santa Ana College. I have been through my own struggles in life just as everyone else has in this city. My motivation has and shall always be my family. I push myself forward in life to be able to give back to my parents and my community. The only other person in my family that has completed college is my mother. While still raising me and working as a teacher, she received her Master’s Degree in Child and Adolescent Studies and has been a great inspiration for me to keep studying. Now she is working as a director at the SAC Child Development Center.…
Nearing the end of the tube I can almost see the shore, It feels as if I've been riding this wave for days. This wave is my hurdle in the ocean that is life, choppy at the beginning but slowly passing by. The ocean has many waves, one for each surfer to ride, my specialty wave happened to be dyslexia. It was in the second grade that my teacher first realized I was different from the other students, because I had yet to read my first book. My parents had found this odd as well, and took me to see a neurologist, who diagnosed me as having dyslexia. I did not quite know what this meant at the time, I only knew that it was the reason I could not comprehend the topics as easily as my classmates.…

My family environment has influenced me a lot especially when my siblings were born. I am the oldest out of five, so I'm always look up to. I always had to make a good example and never show that I was scared. When my mom and stepdad had to work, I would take care of them until they came back while getting my schoolwork and practicing my instrument done too. I never really had a chance to be a kid, I always had to be a mother to my siblings. I would always wish for more time in the day for myself, Although watching them grow up from when they were small and started school for the first time made up for that loss time. I live up to a quote, "Be the master of your future, not the slave of your problems." My senior year I had to stop being…
My mother’s parents would always share stories with us about how their parents came to America from Italy and Germany. They would bring out old photo albums and tell us all about how different life was for them and how they held on to family cooking recipes and every Christmas we make the same dishes that their parents would make. My father’s parents would also share stories about Ireland and my grandpa would talk about what he experienced when he was in the war. Unlike the family I interviewed, I was brought up in a Christian household. Every Sunday the whole family would attend church together and then go out to eat after to talk about what we had learned. We would also pray every night before bed and were always told to give thanks throughout the day for the life we have been blessed with.…
Everyone in their lives overcomes adversity whether it is from work or disability it is never easy. About a year ago, I faced my own near fatal struggle with adversity. Life had become more of a burden than an adventure and nothing seemed to be looking up. Things progressed and events occurred that produced life changing results. After nearly losing my life I realized that things needed to change, mindsets needed to change. The one thing that had not changed was my stubbornness.…
Since I was eight years old my family has always had a boat. From fishing, tubing, hunting and just cruising we did it all. My Dad’s first boat, Nitro 189 Fish and Ski, was the light of my life. Since the day he got it I was his first mate. Helping him with everything cleaning, stocking and repairing. I took great interest and pride into that boat, more than my dad at times, which motivated me to get my boaters license and learned how to work on marine engines before I was 14.…
Six years ago, I experienced the biggest event that has affected my life. I was living in murtaugh with my two parents and four other siblings. One of my older brothers named Fabian was never steered in the right direction. He was strongly influenced by my father's believes that he was not meant to further his education and to just work to support the family. Once of age, Fabian dropped out of school, not reaching freshmen year. He began to get into the wrong crowd and began getting into drugs and was in and out of juvie. The situation got so bad that my parents ended up moving the family from Twin Falls to Murtaugh to get away from the bad influences Fabian had. Fabian ended up doing better he started working at a dairy and made quite the…
