Personal Narrative Essay: The Value Of Community Service
This is Tammy Ngo, and I know that you are very busy and have a lot of things on your plate but I have been inquiring about my badge for the last one and a half week without result. I had tried to attend to this matter in a timely matter in order to reduce the trouble it might cause everyone. I do admit that it was initially my fault in losing the badge and missing my shift on 1/16 (the day after I lost my badge and found it missing). I had tried my best to reach you through emails and phone calls to the volunteer office when on 1/19, you told me that my badge would be ready for me in front of the office by Saturday; which was the day of my next shift. Since I was expecting my badge by my next shift, I did not reschedule any of my future shift on the assumption that the matter will be resolved. I was there Saturday morning to pick up my badge and attend my NICU shift, but discovered that it wasn't there. I drove home and emailed you again in hope that it was a misunderstanding and that I could attend another one of my shift on Tuesday the 26th. I once again drove to the hospital on 1/26 to see if the badge was there and once again I could not find it. I received an email back that night …show more content…
When I entered this program, I know you have certain expectations you expect me to fulfill as a volunteer, and I have certain expectations for you to fulfill as the program coordinator. I was ready to face any consequence that came with losing my badge, but I also expect my badge to be there when you informed me it would be. I am at a lost end of what to do at this point since my next shift will be on Saturday 1/30, and the rest of my February schedule is packed. I do wish to continue on with this program, but this situation is spiraling out of hand. Please reply promptly. Thank

I just wanted to reach out to you again regarding the Regulatory rotational program. I was contacted last Monday by Nitya Narayanan via cell phone although I was unable to take the call at the time because I was in class. Later in the day I returned the phone call and left her my contact information and times I would be available to speak on the phone. By Friday of last week I had not heard anything back so I called again and left a second voicemail regarding the role she was contacting me about. I still have not heard back from anyone on St. Jude's end and was unsure if this original call was related to the rotational program or another position.…

When most people think of character they often associate it with the idea of having to do the right thing. I on the other hand believe character is more than just doing what is morally righteous. Our experiences, obstacles and most importantly, passion define our true character. Passion establishes the difference between obligation or choice and giving up or persevering. Our actions result from the passion we choose to dedicate towards different aspects of our lives including school, work, extracurricular activities and community service. Everyone values these aspects differently and that is what allows for each of us to have our own unique character. I believe people have a more powerful influence when they have a true sense of passion for what they are doing.…

The service that I did with the poor was at St. Vincent De Paul. I took the bus with a friend after school on a random Thursday with Ms. Reuter driving the bus, which I didn’t expect her to know how to do at all. It was my first time working there, because I had only worked at the distribution center the year before for confirmation. When we arrived we all signed in and they put the people who had been there before in their normal locations. My friend and I got split up, with me in charge of sorting all of the donated canned foods and my friend went over to move pallets around. While I was working with one of the staff there, I made friends with some freshmen that were also working with me. They started calling me silly names like “broth boy” because at some point I got in charge of sorting canned broths.…

Carefully, with a shaky hand, I successfully inserted an insulin pump into my left thigh. I counted every carbohydrate I ate and timidly calculated my carbohydrate/insulin ratio. The liquid I was distributing throughout my body was not in fact insulin, but saline. Volunteering as a diet aide at Camp Carefree, a children’s summer camp for type one diabetics, gave me the opportunity to know what it felt like to step into these innocent children’s shoes.…

It’s a Friday,” says my mom. She asked me to go to with her to work this Friday to help out with the staff after school. I roll my eyes, annoyed by even the idea of going to that old boring mental institution. I sigh. I don't have a choice when it comes to me and my mother. “It sounds like so much fun,” I say sarcastically. “Sarah, you’ll be fine,” replys my mom. I ignore her and go to school.…

On June 21, 2011 Spc Brown and I were on CQ duty. 1SG, the SDO and the Platoon Sergeants conducted a walkthrough of the unit’s footprint. When they entered I was laid back at the desk watching a movie, on my phone and had my boots on the desk. I did not immediately stand up or yell “AT EASE” when she entered or exited the building. She also noticed that I wasn’t writing the log down correct and didn’t log Spc Brown out when he left for dinner chow. 1SG asked if I had read the memorandum and my 3 General Orders. I quickly responded “Negative 1Sg I do not.” Upon them leaving once again I didn’t render the proper “AT EASE” when she left the building. I was then order to study my General Orders and 1SG might stop by before pt that next morning. The people who work for you are being thrown under the bus when an appointment is missed. In my case, the people at the physical therapy clinic who work tirelessly to provide care for others that are injured, to get them back in fighting shape. By missing the allotted time all of the preparation and care to make me better was essentially thrown down the drain. A substantial amount of time was wasted that could have been used to benefit me or another soldier. I cannot reiterate enough, the selfishness of missing an appointment. All that was needed was a simple call, a common courtesy, for the situation to be resolved. By missing my appointment I basically told the physical therapy clinic that my time is more valuable than yours, which is very disrespectful.…

I felt this sense of fear, but I knew it was just nervousness. It caused my whole body to tremble. I creeped onto the field and pass by the fifty girls and all of the coaches. Just me walking by everyone gave me this ginormous knot in my stomach, it made me feel like I was going to pass out right on the field. I was breathing heavy, like I just ran a marathon. I was beyond nervous just to be the new girl on the field. I was scared of what the girls thought of me, and how the coaches thought I would play and adapt to the sport. I had never even picked up a lacrosse stick and the girls were passing, catching and shooting on goal: how does a new player get to there if they were two week late into the season? I was terrified I would never get to the level of the rest of the team.…
