The ‘Ken and Barbie’ murders are a fascination for many Canadians still to this day. Despite 20 years passing since the infamous murders occurred, there is still much debate surrounding the crimes that took place. In analyzing this crime, it can be found that there is still many grey areas to the serial murderers: Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka.
A young 17 year old girl named Karla Homolka met 23 year old Paul Bernardo at a restaurant in 1987. By late 1989 Paul and Karla were engaged as a happy couple, while Bernardo was raping numerous women in the Scarborough region with Homolka’s approval. In total, he admitted to sexually assaulting 14 women and being related to 53 charges in total. Paul wanted Karla’s younger sister’s virginity because Karla wasn’t a virgin. In July 1990 Bernardo and Homolka served Tammy a spaghetti dinner laced with Valium stolen from Homolka’s workplace. These drugs rendered Tammy unconscious as Bernardo raped her. This first attack lasted only a minute before Tammy became conscious again and bernardo was forced to stop. Homolka stole animal tranquilizers from her work and after their family Christmas dinner, Bernardo and Homolka served Tammy the drugs through beverages. She began to choke on her vomit while being raped by both of them and died. This was one of their first videotaped acts, and they were both let off free after Tammy’s death was ruled an accident.
Friday June 14th, 1991 a rebellious girl named Leslie Mahaffy had broken her curfew and arrived home in the early hours of the morning only to find herself locked out of the house with her parents in bed. When attempting to enter her house she encountered Bernardo attempting to steal license plates when he then pulled a knife on her and kidnapped her. When he brought her to his home, Homolka was asleep and was angry when she woke up the next morning to find a new victim of Bernardo's. Being an obedient wife she began to sexually assault Mahaffy while participating in Bernardo’s

The popular television show, CSI: Crime Scene Investigations has been on the air for 12 years, and it has brought forth the behind-the-scenes actions of criminal investigations, even if its portrayals are not always scientifically accurate. This has caused an interest in the forensic sciences that has led most people to a skewed view of how a criminal investigation actually works. The reality of a criminal investigation is that it is generally more tedious and difficult than the theory of criminal investigation would have you believe. By examining the forensic and investigative procedures of the case of Pamela Foddrill, it is apparent that the theory of criminal investigation was not representative of the procedures concerning examination of the body, but that it was demonstrative of much of the investigatory steps taken by police, like search warrants. On August 18th, 1995, 44-year-old Pamela Foddrill disappeared from the town of Linton, Indiana. Pamela went to buy some groceries at the local IGA and was abducted: her body was found wrapped in a sleeping bag near Russellville, Illinois four months later. Roughly four years later, five individuals were held responsible for their part in the abduction, rape, and murder of Pamela Foddrill: Roger Long, John Redman, Jerry Russell Sr., Wanda Hubbell, and Plynia Fowler. Long, Redman, and Russell are serving life sentences, while Fowler pled out to 14 years and Hubbell pled out to 20 years of incarceration.…

Anthony Sowell moved in with family directly following his release. He moved into a Cleveland home on Imperial Avenue. Soon, residents started to complain about a pungent odor coming from Anthony’s home. Sowell blamed the source of the odor on a nearby sausage factory, and a new sewage pipe that had just been put in. Based on the article ‘After Gang Rape of Girl, 16, First a Fine, and Then a Murder’ written by Kai Schultz. Throughout my entire reading of the essay, it is crystal clear that the article focuses on the criminal cases that happen in the country. It is quite shocking as the number of cases increasing day by day, most of the criminal cases involving the violence, murdered and rape cases towards women. The author begins the article by stating the recent gang rape and killing that happen in that country and state the weakness of the recent government in handling the sexual assault in the country. Kai Schultz drives most of his argument in explaining that even crimes happened, the people would take advantage at the victim.…

Months later, on November 30th, married, 52-year-old father, Gary Ridgway, is arrested as he leaves his truck-painting job. Thankfully, it is the end of the longest running serial killer investigation in U.S. history; the break in the case was connecting the DNA taken when Gary Ridgway was arrested for the relatively minor offence of ‘loitering for the purposes of soliciting prostitution’. And this wasn’t the first time Ridgway’s connection to prostitutes had come to the attention of the police. In 1980, a prostitute he’d picked up accused him of driving her to the woods and trying to strangle her. Charges were dropped when Ridgway explained it away by saying she’d started to bite him while performing oral sex, and he only choked her to make her stop. Then again, in 1982, he was stopped with a prostitute in his truck and questioned by…

The story of Olivia Tamayo who worked for Harris Farms for approximately six years is only one example of cases featured in the documentary. Her supervisor Rene Rodriquez raped Olivia Tamayo three times at gunpoint. Her voice was shaky in the interview when she recalled her ordeal, “He said I was his, and that he would never leave me in peace.” She tried to defend herself from her boss. She remained silent until she reported her case to a Rape Crisis Center. Human Services workers reported the abuse to the EEOC. Then the EEOC contacted the law firm of Smith and Johnson who took the case of Ms. Tamayo. Attorney Willie Smith was successful in winning a lawsuit that awarded her a damage settlement. However, the CEO Mr. John Harris sides with his Supervisor and denied the rape occurred. It took teamwork from the report by the Rape Crisis Center and working within a network of other services to bring a small amount of justice to her unjust treatment.…

The controversies surrounding the ordeal were that the girl wanted it. After the description of the ordeal, the father of the rapist defended his son basing himself on time spent. The victim states that people don't get it that the rape as a crime is not about the sex involved but rather the violence attached. Another case is that of Michelle who was abducted in a village of Monjas in Jalapa and raped repeatedly. The man pulled up from a motorcycle and threatened her with a green gun. That time she was a teenager, and she discovered that she was pregnant three months after the ordeal. Surprising enough, the wife of the rapist threatened her to get her husband out of…

    Kristin’s Death

This case is based on the death of Kristin whose author is her father. Michael Carter was Kristin’s ex-boyfriend, his past criminal record demonstrates how easy it is for criminals to get away with murder. I’m going to go over some of his past criminal record to demonstrate how Michael Cartier should have never been set free in the streets, and to demonstrate how many opportunities our justice system had to put him away in jail before he committed more crimes. I believe that the best way to present Michael’s criminal history is by covering some of the many encounters he had with our justice system prior to murdering Kristin as well as the consequences for his actions. The first arrest was 1998 for burglary, when arrested Michael was sentenced to six month in jail. However, he never served any time for this crime. Followed by a sledgehammer rampage in 1990. Another incident where our justice system failed to put Michael in jail was on March 28, 199I when another of Michael’s violent abuse victim called his probation officer. The probation officer “told Rose to get a restraining order” (Stillman, 2010). Rose Ryan sister mentioned to the probation officer that Michael had a gun in his possession, this led the probation officer to obtain a warrant for Michael Cartier’s arrest. This didn’t stop Michael from attacking rose with a pair of scissors. When Michael was finally picked up by…
