My Story: Why I Choose Nursing When I was a child, I always said that when I grow up I want to be a doctor because I loved to help people. As the years went on and I started college, I began to ask myself some questions such as, “Do I really want to be in school for that long?” “Are there other medical professions that I might be interested in?” Well, my answer to the first question was “No” and to the second question “yes.” I knew right then, I had to start doing more research to find out what other medical professions I was interested in. After doing some research and asking some of my family and friends for advice, I came to the conclusion that I want to be a nurse. Figuring this out was just the beginning of my journey, now it was time for me to find out what type of nurse I want to be. Discovering what type of nurse I want to be was not an easy task for several reasons. First, there are so many different nursing opportunities so I had a hard time just narrowing down to one area. Secondly, when I did narrow it down to one area and I decide to go with pediatric nurse, I realized every time I saw or heard a baby cry, it broke my heart. I knew right then that pediatric nurse was not for me because I would be too concerned with making the baby cry. At this point in my journey I was stuck. How was I going to figure out what type of nurse I want to be? Finally, after pondering and searching for quite some time, it finally hit me. I decided that I was going to be a home care nurse. I was working at this home care agency for a little over two years and what I saw and observed there was really what helped me decide to become a home care nurse. One thing I noticed about the nurses in home care, in comparison with the nurses in the hospitals, is that they have more one on one time with the patients. Secondly, I like the fact that
