The leadership model in ADRP 6-22 (2012) shows that military and professional bearing, fitness, confidence, and resilience affect one’s presence (p. 1-5). Throughout Benavidez’s life, he created a presence that is still seen and felt today. During a speech given in 1991, long after his retirement, Benavidez showed his military and personal bearing. Benavidez said, “It makes me feel great when I put my uniform on. That’s the best piece of clothing I have ever owned. And hey I wear it all the time, I don’t care what other people think. They think I don’t have civilian clothes. I don’t care. It is great to be in uniform. . . And I get a haircut every Friday” (Losch & Kingsbury, 2017). Benavidez demonstrated his fitness, confidence, and resilience during his recovery from his first wound in Vietnam. In 1965, Benavidez stepped on a mine, which paralyzed him from the waist down (Benavidez, 1991, para. 7). Against his doctors’ wishes, Benavidez would “slip out of bed and crawl to a wall using my elbows and chin. My back would just be killing me and I’d be crying, but I get to the wall and I’d stand there like Kaw-Liga, the Indian. I’d stand and move my toes, right and left every single chance I got” (Benavidez, 1991, para. 7). Nine months later, Benavidez limped out of the hospital on his own (Benavidez, 1991, para. 9). Benavidez’s drive to walk again…

Discipline is the focal point of marching but marching also promotes the enhancement of midshipmen candidate’s physique. This is due to the grueling long hours of marching which enhances ones physical ability. Marching is a key element of traveling, or Δx getting from point alpha to point bravo. As one is able to find the initial velocity and final velocity with the amount of time they perceive with the accounted data they have of the distance they are going, or will travel. This helps with finding the final displacement which in turn will help the Midshipmen Candidate with mental processing’s of the “brain” or mental states. Marching helps break Midshipmen attitudes that they have previously had before coming to NAPS. Marching helps discipline and understand the standing of other units and how important it is to not walk through marching formations during broad daylight. The audacity one must have to walk through a marching platoon of any company. The balls one must have to walk through a marching platoon as if he/she didn’t care of the consequences such as writing a 500 word essay on the Ethics of Marching which the word count was just broken 21 words ago. If these Midshipmen Candidates do not break their attitudes by writing such essays, in the future they will be in serious trouble with bigger authorities such as Chief Clarke, Chief Kennon, and or LT Miniter or CAPT Fielding, which are some of the names that I fear to be in trouble with. Resilience, dedication and leadership are qualities befitting for a successful USMA cadet and a successful Army officer. Resilience is not only an essential quality for becoming a successful cadet or officer, it is also essential for your life. Resilience is the ability to resurrect one’s self from hard times, to never give up, and displays ones mental strength. In the academy I’ve heard that on a cadet’s first year they undergo times of overwhelming stress in tests of emotional stability, perseverance, and ability to organize and perform under stress. With resilience and resolve a cadet will be able to overcome these stressful obstacles. Likewise, discipline is another quality in becoming a successful USMA cadet and a successful Army officer. At times resilience may complement dedication because when one dedicates their self to something, one needs the resolve to continue on with it and never give up. Dedication shows ones loyalty, commitment, and devotion, in which is an important trait when offering one’s service to their country. To finish, a successful USMA cadet and Army officer should have the quality of leadership. As a leader one must offer guidance and work together as a team to get things done efficiently. Leadership brings out control and order in a group. Showing resilience and dedication as a leader conveys a sense of trustworthiness and cooperation among their followers. Any person with a position of leadership needs to set a positive example in order to make their self charismatic and a successful leader. Having these qualities will show the mental strength, devotion, and management skills it takes in becoming a successful USMA cadet and Army…
