Write a 400 - 600 word essay responding to the following question. “In spite of criticisms by some revisionist historians, Christopher Columbus, and other sixteenth century explorers, acted with a daring and courage that brought both wealth and pride to their patron nations. By viewing these men within the context of the historical periods in which they lived, they truly deserved to be called heroes.” To what extent is the above statement true?

FRQ-
In response to the truthfulness of aforementioned statement, many factors must be taken into consideration. For example, if the act that led to the fame and glory of an explorer was actually founded in logic and science or if it was luck that led to their discovery and subsequent recognition. Also, one would have to consider the difference between their motives and the actual findings. For example, if they accomplished what they set out to do or if they ultimately failed in the mission they attempted to accomplish. There are two explorers that this response is based on, Christopher Columbus (Cristobal Colon) and Ferdinand Magellan.
Many attribute Christopher Columbus with daring and ingenuity for having the initiative to sail into the unknown and discover North America. In reality, however, it was a mission doomed to failure. He ignored the (accurate) counsel of the top scientists of his day, insisting that his hypothesis that the world is round (true) was possible but if it was true then there would be an arc much larger than his calculations indicated between Europe’s west tip to the east of Asia, specifically India. Had he not stumbled upon North America, which he thought was India, (Hence Native Americans being referred to as Indians) his men would have mutinied or perished from dehydration or starvation. His folly led to an accidental discovery of a new continent, but was not based on his greatness. Rather, it was based on his ignorance and

Christopher Columbus could be considered successful in some ways, as an explorer and as a representative of Spain. Although there are a lot of negatives when you evaluate him as an explorer, he did discover land that was new to him and the Europeans. Because of this, he was able to bring gold and riches to Spain and Europe. He also changed lives in both the Old World and the New World, though the changes for the latter were detrimental and unpleasant. He introduced European colonization to the Americas, leading to an exchange in plants, animals, cultures, and ideas. Also, while Columbus wasn't the first European to reach the Western Hemisphere, he was the first European to stay. To be brief, Columbus quickly changed the world.…

As I mentioned before I have always heard the saying but was always uncertain as to Columbus’ claim to fame. After reading about him I realized he had lots going for him other than the famous boats the Nina and Pinta. I thought it was interesting how his life before setting sail was rough, he was washed onto the shores of Portugal and his wife died during their marriage. “The Lord having opened my mind to the fact that it would be possible to sail from here to the Indies” (p. 51). This quote to me says that he really had his mind set to finding the land and he was a very persistent and religious man. I found the picture of Columbus leaving Ferdinand and Isabel to be somewhat comical because of the boats in the background just waiting for him to get…

As we all stood in line to aboard our supplies for a hazardous exploration mission, you could feel the despair in the atmosphere. The thought of going into unknown territory away from your love ones, with the threat of unknown new diseases, however there were those men that looked at this as a new start and a way to make history. Although there were rumors that Columbus had no entirely told the truth about are objective. Columbus thought that by sailing west he would find a quicker and easier route to the East. There should have been more about Christopher Columbus on the United States history myths search. Not only did he not discover that the world was round, but he never even landed in America. The more research I did, the worst I found out he was. In 1492, Christopher Columbus and the Santa Maria shipwrecked off what is known now as the Bahamas. The land was inhabited by the peaceful Lucayan people. The Lucayan people worked for hours rescuing the crew and ship. Christopher Columbus did not look at the Lucayan as people but as a means to wealth. Men were forced to provide him with food and gold while women were forced to have sex with his men. If they refused, Christopher Columbus would cut off their ear or nose to serve as a warning to the others.…

Following the Crusades, European interest in Asian goods skyrocketed. This interest led to a need for new cheaper direct water routes to Asia. This led to the accidental discovery of America by Christopher Columbus. This discovery is seen as one of the most successful failures in history, as Columbus failed to find his target, India. However, the failure was a disguised success as new trade routes were discovered, colonies for European nations, and new crops were discovered. Columbus’ methods were seen as cruel and inhumane by some and he was criticized by many. This is seen in the textbook, In a People’s History of The United States. The latter of the argument glorified Columbus for his “acceleration” of the Native populations in the Americas through the introduction of old world crops and technology. This view was supported by the American Pageant. Both texts supply factual information about various events in history, but present Christopher Columbus and the Europeans in different ways.…

Christopher Columbus may not have been the first European to find out about North America and South America. For instance, the Vikings came before him but then why did people in Africa, Asia, and Europe not know about the achievement or the new continents? It’s because the Vikings did not tell anyone. Nor did any other people who came to America before Columbus. But Columbus did. He told the world. Therefore, Christopher Columbus is a hero in the same way Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, or Neil Armstrong are heroes. Neil Armstrong was the first man to step on the moon. Someone would have done it…

Previous opinions of Christopher Columbus was to be the man to find the New World. Many elementary school children are taught that Columbus is a hero for “discovering” the New World. However, other explorers had already been to the new world, and historians have written books based on Columbus’s journal that portray his true persona. My own opinion of Columbus has changed after reading the Queen editorial.…

One myth is that Columbus actually found America. He never explored America, but he did explore a few islands near it. There were already many Native Americans already living in America. He also didn’t prove that the Earth was round because it was already proven by the Greeks. He was just trying to find an easier trade route to Asia, but his math was wrong and landed in America.…

Columbus, the man who discovered the new world, infact did not discover it, for it was inhabited by migrants from Asia, more than fifteen thousand years ago, almost one thousand years before Columbus landed in America. Christopher Columbus was, despite the arguments a Genoan man and infact Christian, and he had two brothers and a sister. He sailed a thirty-three day trip on his first voyage and ‘found’ America on October twelfth. But, before this, Columbus had to go through the queen in order to receive the money needed to go on his voyages. He was denied twice before finally being given permission in 1492. When he landed he believed he was in the Indies and had even convinced his crew of about ninety boys and men. Christopher found naked inhabitants who were “gentle and naive” upon reaching the new world, and spoke greatly of them in his journals. Before being called America (which was given its name because of the sailor Amerigo), the land was referred to as the new world, which a Venetian printer came up with in 1504. Columbus was a man who sailed a great four voyages and may have been more cruel than…

As children, we all remember hearing the rhyme, “In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue.” This has to be the best example of someone going after what they believed in. In the year 1492 Columbus set out to prove to Europe that the world was not flat, which at the time was the belief of many. Despite the fact that if he was wrong, it was said that he would fall off of the earth; Columbus didn’t let anything stop him from seeking the truth. Like a true explorer, Columbus forged an expedition with himself and a few reluctant crew members. If not for the courage and effort of Columbus, who knows how long it would have taken for someone to “discover” America. The Expeditions of Columbus made it possible for many other explorers, ultimately leading to trade and greater migration. Although Columbus died rather poor and was despised by many, his discoveries, knowledge and most importantly his actions, helped shape the world today.…
