A Summary by Michael Alberico

Mary Jane and Dan had moved their family to Seattle, do to Dan’s new job which he loved and would come home every night and just talk about it. Mary Jane had taken a managerial position at First Guarantee. However, less than a year later tragedy struck. Dan died suddenly from a burst aneurysm.

There was a carnival atmosphere in the air. People were laughing and fish guys yelling out at the crowd. Even fish flying through the air. The guys would call out the orders to each other and then repeat the calls “One salmon flying away to Minnesota” one person called and the rest chorused. Then one of the fish guys noticed her and asked what was wrong? She didn't mean to tell him but the whole story about the third floor and her situation just came out. To her surprise Lonnie listened very attentively. He asked her how she liked the fish market. “I love it, so much energy and enthusiasm”, she replied. Lonnie explained that it hadn't always been like that, in fact, a few years ago they had their own toxic energy dump, but now he just loves working there and is spoiled for life. Lonnie asked if she would like to know how they turned things around. Mary Jane was unsure if a fishmonger could help her with her problem, but agreed to return the next day.

RETURN VISIT

When Mary Jane returned Lonnie took her aside and explained some of the tedious tasks that a fishmonger does during the day. They discussed how any job can be boring to the person doing it, he said. Some of his customers travel all over the world for their job, which sounded exciting to Lonnie, but the customers say it gets pretty boring very fast. Just the same any job can be done with energy and enthusiasm. Here, Mary Jane learned her first lesson: There is always a choice about the way you do your work, even if there is no choice about the work itself. We can choose the attitude we bring to our work.

    Passing-Death of Clare

The death of Clare at the end of Nella Larsen’s Passing though left unclear was, in my opinion, caused by Irene pushing her out of the window. Nella Larsen does not specify what exactly happened, but Irene pushing Clare out of the window seems like the most plausible one. I don’t know whether Larsen intentionally left the ending so abruptly but I just feel as if Irene was the one to kill Clare. Larsen makes this point clear through the phrasing she uses when describing the self-esteem destruction Irene undergoes once Clare has reinserted herself into Irene's life, and the situations Irene finds herself as a direct result of Clare.…

The message that working at a job that one enjoys is one of the best ways to live a happy and fulfilling life is depicted in many of the interviews both through the text and the visuals. The people in the book that dreaded going to work every day and didn’t have any passion about what they did had a very different voice than people who did. The overall tone and mood of their interviews based on the visual and textual connections, was depressing, as opposed to the others who enjoyed their job, which were much more cheery and uplifting to read.…

Poet, Mary Jane Sterling, expresses the pain of desolation through Thoughts on Silence, with an intention to raise consciousness on residential schools. Throughout the poem, longing and loneliness is evident while Sterling expresses her hardships in trying to adapt to a different culture and a new language. The poem starts with her feeling lost and confused in what seems, to her, like a different world. Looking outside, the narrator feels her “heart [leap] with the bird.” The bird symbolizes the tranquility and freedom which she longs for. These three examples undoubtedly illustrate her experiences of despair, and why she chose to write this poem. In truth, Sterling uses her personal experiences in a cleverly written poem to raise consciousness…

An ordinary boy who loves to fish more than anything, anything that is except for Shelia Mant, he said "There was a summer in my life when the only creature that seemed lovelier to me than a largemouth bass was Shelia Mant". The Mants had rented the cottage next to ours; Shelia Mant was the middle daughter at 17-years-old, a perfect ten in looks, and had his heart in her back pocket. When the boy finally got his chance he took her in his canoe to Dixford where a band was playing. On the way to the concert there was a largemouth bass flipping around in the water and Sheila mentioned that she thought fishing was dumb and a few seconds later, his line caught a fish. Shelia said, "I think fishing is dumb, I mean boring and all, definitely dumb." It was a huge bass, and it was hooked on. The whole time he was rowing the canoe, he was debating whether or not he should catch the fish, or ignore it.…

But as this is self-evident, Schwartz wonders why we embrace Smith’s view of work. Schwartz answers that Smith’s view creates a self-fulfilling prophecy. The world of work is often so gloomy that people do hate it. Even highly skilled professionals like physicians, lawyers or professors may want to do good work, but find that only satisfying the bottom line matters to their employers. They are actively discouraged from spending time with patients, clients, or students. After a while, they start to work only for the money. But this is contrary to our…

    Sympathy for Mary Maloney

Roald Dahl makes the reader feel sympathy for Mary Maloney even though she has just murdered her own husband by skillfully developing her character and by placing Mrs. Maloney in a situation that justifies her actions. Firstly, the authour begins the short story by showing how loyal and loving Mary Maloney is towards her husband. He starts off with telling the reader how Mrs. Maloney looks forward to him coming home and pampers him after his workday with alcohol and dinner, even though she is six months pregnant. He shows the reader her deep devotion for her husband, “She loved to luxuriate in the presence of this man, and to feel-almost as a sunbather feels the sun-that warm male glow...”. As well, the author shows that Mrs. Maloney is very dependent on her husband financially and emotionally. She is unemployed and pregnant and she seems to spend her day looking forward to her husband coming home. By the time the truth comes out, she seems to be the ideal wife. When her husband finally tells his endearing wife what has put him in such a horrible mood, she is heartbroken. He is leaving her... The reader feels so sickened by this selfish man that the reader does not really blame her for killing him. Her reaction after she kills him reinforces the sympathy that the reader feels for her. The killing was quite obviously done in the heat of the moment. When Mrs. Maloney turns her mind to getting caught she is completely unselfish, in contrast to her husband. “It made no difference to her. In fact it would be a relief. On the other hand, what about the child? Did they kill them both mother and child?” Finally, Roald Dahl shows that Mrs. Maloney is very clever and this makes the reader like her even more. Her method of cooking the murder weapon for the investigating officers is so clever (“[The weapon is] Probably right under our very noses.”) that we forget about her murder and think more of her cleverness and the…
