Literary Analysis Essay: In the fairy tales, the protagonists always gain their Snow Whites in the end and they all live happily ever after. In fact, all protagonists’ fate is decided by the narrator’s hand. Just like the literary works we have recently read, including the poems “Sunday Greens” by Rita Dove, “Sinful City” by Jaroslav Seifert and the excerpt from Like Water for Chocolate from Laura Esquivel, the characters’ fate was sealed from that moment. Therefore, the most relevant theme through three works is that fate is for those too weak to determine their own destiny. We are fated, since everything has already happened. In the poem “Sunday Greens”, the woman is living under the poverty. Here is the one that uses personification to show the poverty: “Ham knocks in the pot, nothing but bones, each with its bracelet of flesh” (Line 9). By the way, Dove also uses alliteration with the W’s to show that she wants change. Even though she has the will for change, fate ordains her destiny; “she pauses, remembers, her mother in a slip lost in blues, and those collards, wild-eared singing” (Line 22). Instead of change for a better living condition, she acknowledges that showing the respect to her mother and keeping the tradition alive are more important. Furthermore, she was lost in the heavy sadness and time of depression toward her mother. In this case, she continues living in a miserable life and cherishing the memory of her mother. Fate, through her whole life, has doomed and been unchangeable. In conclusion, we are the puppets of fate because we have no choice and don’t want to break the principles. Fate always teases people. It is true in the excerpt Like Water for Chocolate that Esquivel portrays the same theme of fate limited by tradition. This is the story of Tita, youngest daughter of the formidable matriarch Mama Elena who forbids Tita to marry her true love Pedro because tradition says that the youngest daughter must take care for her mother
