The 55 minutes we collaborated one-on-one gave me a closer perspective on cognition and language, by working on math and grammar. When I asked Michael to take out his homework, he was organized and turned to his weekly assignment outline. The grammar on page 154 in his Voyages book was fairly simple, with one incorrect answer on how to form a contraction from “I am.” First, Michael wrote, “I’s.” When I prompted him to rethink his answer, he wrote, “Im’s.” With one more attempt to help him talk through the question, I watched Michael figure out, “I am” becomes…

    El Loro Anthropology

The excavation of El Loro unearthed numerous old artifacts. It uncovered pots, bottles, textiles, grinding stones, and numerous other items once used by this lands inhabitants. Based on the law of superposition we know that the stratum furthest down is the oldest and the stratum closest to the surface is the newest. Another fact that we have for excavation is the law of association stating that, items near one another or in the same stratum are from the same time period. From those facts it can be determined that stratum that includes stone tools are from the oldest time period, then the pottery and textiles are from the middle time period, and lastly the painted items are all from one time period. As time progresses the sophistication behind the items unearthed grows. It starts with rock, then becomes handcrafted clay items, then painted and decorated items showing the progression of this civilization. There are also a couple of skeletons buried that show how the people treated their dead. If I were to run this excavation I would have used the total coverage strategy due to the density of artifacts in this area. It would be more expensive and damaging but it would allow us to find all of the artifacts by time period stratum by stratum. Of course there would be part left untouched for the future archeologists and their new technology…

    Johnathan Anthropology

In the summer of ‘69, Woodstock had just begun when Jonathan Wells arrived with his makeshift garage band in tow. Johnathan’s band had the main parts of any good band. They just weren’t creative enough to get that heart beating, fist pumping, head nodding music that was absolutely necessary for any garage group to find. There was Tommy on the drums. He never really learned to play. All he could do was memorize solos and didn’t contribute at all to the creative pot. Cyrus rocked the bass, but as the same with Tommy, he just wasn’t creative enough to do anything more than memorize his riffs and occasionally scream out the chorus. Cyrus, unlike Tommy though, did learn to play at the crisp age of 13.…

Biological Anthropology is the study of human biology within the framework of evolution. Cultural Anthropology is the “study of contemporary and historically recent human societies and culture. The main focus being culture i.e. the customs and beliefs of some human group” (Bailey,Garrik and James 5).Often, to better understand the meanings that people attach to their behavior, anthropologists live with them to observe them and get involved in their daily activities and rituals. “Acting like a thief” and “A Rajasthani Jagrata” are examples of two documentaries made by such anthropologists as an attempt to understand the behavior of the people of two very different societies. They cover various concepts including the process of enculturation, racism, rites of passage and gender.…

    Biological Anthropology

For many years biological anthropologists have been trying to identify race through genetics but race is not determined biologically. The closest aspect to a biological feature in grouping people is cline; geography making people of the same area in the world similar. Human variation, however, is classification of skin color, eye color; characteristics that are genetic and unchanging genes. Genetic traits have nothing to do with race; it influences the idea of it. Mutations cause variation. An example of this would be with how sunlight affects skin tone because of dark and light melanin. Race cannot be naturally divided into groups because it is an arbitrary, modern idea; a social construct based on ethnicity, social reform, and culture, otherwise known as The Great Chain of Being. Constant change in the world, such as migration and reproduction, brings diversity upon us. Jim Brown, in The Power of Illusion, specifically says, “Race has changed as a definition in this country.” The world is always changing; people will continuously try to identify race through genetics, but it never will be proven biologically because it’s merely a cultural classification. Also, in the film, a group of students try to find out who they might be closely related to, based on mitochondrial DNA. A black girl believes she is more closely related to another black boy in the class. When they matched the MTDNA, they found out they were wrong. Some had the same number and pattern of MTDNA that others across the country had. This proved race had nothing to do with genetics. Scientists have tried to see differences in athletic ability according to race. However, there is no biological explanation for why someone of one race might be more athletic than someone of another. If a white person ran in the mountains with high altitude, he would have greater lung capacity than someone who ran an average racetrack. Nutrition and adaptation affect…

The use of anthropologists in intelligence gathering for the military is a very complex subject. To speak upon because, there are many pros and cons they will encounter along the way here is an example of a con that was stated in Chapter- 9 of our textbook “Anthropologists have deep reservations that anthropologists' involvement could hurt civilians,” (Nowak & Laird, 2010). They are right! By given the military personal information could cause horrific trouble. However, pros side of this if anthropologists does go out in the field and gather valuable information. It will provide the military with the knowledge they need to understanding the local population. According to Steve Fondacaro, helping the military will reduce the need to use lethal force by determine what the community needs (Shay, 2009). The AAA says the program violates its code of ethics. So, if this violates their code of ethics why do they still let the military obtain the information collected? I cannot accept this in my opinion that is why other culture does not trust our American soldiers or people, and I do not blame them. Especially if it will get someone kill, and even provoke a war. Anthropologists supposed to observe ones culture, the only time interacts happens is through discrete interview session. For most, they should not be involved in situation they do not understand! How thing change when the government need help. They have little concern for the people well-being when their society is attack.…
