I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud

I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o 'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the Milky Way,
They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

The waves beside them danced; but they
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:
A poet could not but be gay,
In such a jocund company:
I gazed—and gazed—but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:

For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.

—William Wordsworth (1770-1850)

    My favorite poems are jabberwocky by Lewis Carroll and Knoxville Tennessee by Nikki Giovanni. I like those poems the most because they are both different. Knoxville Tennessee is about the great things that summer can bring, like the things you love to do in the summer and the things you like to eat in the summer. I like jabberwocky also because it is fiction and not real story. In the poem jabberwocky in think these nonsense words make this poem special and it is a really exciting poem. But I think you can learn something from that poem, and that is you can be afraid of something but you can always do it when you believe in yourself and when you are not afraid anymore but in this poem he killed the jabberwocky and came home and now maybe he is the hero. And when you can do something you are afraid of when you can be a little hero because you are not afraid anymore. I think poems are sometimes better than books because you can read long poems and short poems but you can learn from both, but in one thing books and poems are equal they both tell a story even when it is a story that is not real they tell a story.…

    The poem ‘Daffodils ' by William Wordsworth reflects the inherent connection between man and nature, which is so commonly found in his poetry; for example, in ‘Tintern Abbey ', and ‘The Two-Part Prelude '. In my essay I am going to explore and analyse the variety of figurative devices Wordsworth uses to communicate this idea, and the poetic motives behind his writing. ‘ Daffodils ' is essentially a lyric poem which is expressive of the feelings of joy the poet encounters when seeing the multitude of daffodils.…

    “I wandered lonely as a cloud”, written by William Wordsworth in 1804 and published in 1815, is one of the most famous poems of Wordsworth, and it’s also known as “Daffodils” or “The daffodils”. The poem is 24 lines long and it’s composed by four six-lines stanzas. In each stanza, the first line rhymes with the third and the second with the fourth. The stanza then ends with a rhyming couplet. Wordsworth unifies the content of the poem by focusing the first three stanzas on the experience at the lake and the last stanza on the memory of that experience. An interesting aspect is that despite the fact that it is a lyrical poem, it’s built as a sonnet, meaning that the rhyme is type ABABCC, and each stanza is composed by a quatrain and then a couplet. Also ,the lines in the poem are in a iambic tetrameter. The writer uses figures of speech, such as metaphors, epithets, personifications or comparisons in order to express his feelings to the reader.…

    A figure of speech is the use of a word or words diverging from its usual meaning. It can also be a special repetition, arrangement or omission of words with literal meaning, or a phrase with a specialized meaning not based on the literal meaning of the words in it, as in idiom, metaphor, simile, hyperbole, or personification. Figures of speech often provide emphasis, freshness of expression, or clarity. However, clarity may also suffer from their use, as any figure of speech introduces an ambiguity between literal and figurative interpretation. A figure of speech is sometimes called a rhetorical figure or a locution.…

    A figure of speech is a rhetorical device that achieves a special effect by using words in distinctive ways. Though there are hundreds of figures of speech, here we'll focus on just 20 of the most common figures. You will probably remember many of these terms from your English classes. Figurative language is often associated with literature--and with poetry in particular. But the fact is, whether we're conscious of it or not, we use figures of speech every day in our own writing and conversations. In common usage, the opposite of a literal expression: a word or phrase that means something more or something other than it seems to say. As Professor Brian Vickers has observed, "It is a sad proof of the decline of rhetoric that in modern colloquial English the phrase 'a figure of speech' has come to mean something false, illusory or insincere."…
