Jimmy Alcantara and His Works
“Red ang Luha ni Michael” and “Blue ang Kobre Kama ni Jake” are works of writer, Jimmy Alcantara.
To be honest, I have never heard of him, or his works before the class discussion of his “Red ang Luha ni Michael” story. But I must admit that the story-and it’s sequel as well-are very much different from the usual comedies and tragedies written by any other published or unpublished writer.
His first story and its prequel are undeniable tragedies of an unusual love affair. However, both had made different appeals to its readers. Some find it funny, while others believe that there are deeper messages in the story than an extraordinary love affair between Michael, a straight-headed bisexual, and Ricky, his partner who’s a little loose in the head.
In humanities, it is discussed that there are different factors that affect an artist; who, in this case, is Jimmy Alcantara.
Of course, we cannot conclude that the story is just a narrative of the writer’s experiences. But it is possible to say that his writings may be the reflection of his thoughts, which are likewise the result of his experiences.
If I were to guess who Jimmy Alcantara was, I would say that he is a man with an open mind and a liberated personality. I also think that he is a conscientious individual who strongly believes in the teachings of his religion.
I came to this thought because if you will look closely at the story, its characters are in a guy-to-guy relationship, which shows how possibly liberal Alcantara is. However, the relationship of the two characters doesn’t prove to be a good one, instead, they suffer a lot because their relationship was, according to the sequel, sinful in many probable terms.
I guess it may be true that a reader can guess or assess parts of the personality of the writer. In the case of Jimmy Alcantara, these are my assessments in accordance to his

This is seen through the parallels between Lewis’s love life in reality and his love life “on stage” or in the fantasy world created by the institution which exists through the presence of comedy. For example on stage infidelity is treated humorously “in character “it is a trick and emotional turmoil portrayed as comedy. Louis Nowra uses lighting to help enhance the fact that in the fantasy world infidelity is a humorous matter – where all the actors are on stage and suddenly the lights go out, in the commotion and under the cover of darkness we are shown how cherry develops the courage to kiss Lewis, even tho he is in a committed relationship. This technique re-enforces the idea that the institute has a sense of fantasy about it in which acts of infidelity are less impacting and seen as a humorous gesture rather than an act of betrayal. However “Off Stage” in reality Lewis is devastated by Lucy’s acts of infidelity and betrayal, it is evident that they do not share the same views on the concept of “free love”….(Should there be a full stop after betrayal and just leave it at that? Or should I include this…

Personal narrative and first-hand observation are key components if an author wishes to be effective in his writing. Through the use of personal narrative and first-hand observation, the author is able to gain sympathy from or relate to the audience. Although it can be argued the use of these two components does not result in effective writing, it is proven to be true in Frederick Douglass’ A Narrative Life of Frederick Douglass, Malcolm X’s The Ballot or the Bullet, and Immortal Technique’s Dance with the Devil.…

Story telling about a person’s life can be a good way to illustrate a point, a technique which has been used throughout human history. Authors such as Judith Ortiz Cofer, in her essay The myth of the Latin woman: I just met a girl named Maria, and David Sedaris in his essay I Like Guys, use narrative to argue their thesis, however this is not limited only to established authors. With the pair of essays written by Cofer and Sedaris (and a little story of my own) a reader can see how the use of narration describing events in an author’s life can be used to argue a point.…

Thomas Hardy believes that stories are written to tell an account of an important event whether it is personal or secular. He states that we look to books to find something greater than ourselves, we seek knowledge. If there is anything that is in the least bit more extraordinary than our own mediocre lives, we seek it. If a story does not include any unique phenomena it is considered unnecessary. “A story must be exceptional enough to justify its telling; it must have something more unusual to relate than the ordinary experience of every average man and woman.” I support this statement given the fact that most people read and listen to stories that have certain remarkable element for their own pleasure.…

For instance, Lewis’ and Lucy’s relationship is an open relationship. Lucy isn't into fidelity as reflected by her sexual affair with Nick. She’s very skeptical about the whole idea of Lewis directing a play in a mental institution however he is only doing it for the money and he supports the views of Lucy and Nick that ‘love is not so important now days’ and that Cosi Fan Tutte is inappropriate for the times that they currently live in.…
