Yubing Shi Reaction Paper 2 The original story of Akugawa’s “In the Grove” uses third person point of view. While in Akugawa’s adaption work, he examined the darker side of humanity by using multiple narrators to narrate their own agenda. Hence, each person gives a different account of the story which leaves reader to analyze what is truth and who is the murder in the story. Each character’s testimony seems to clarify this murder from own viewpoint, however they contradicted each other and eventually created a complex vision of events that brings into question humanity’s ability to perceive the truth. First of all, Akugawa develops several other characters other than the three main characters in the original story, including woodcutter, Buddhist Priest, the girl’s mother, and a police. These all provide reader with a complete picture of the incident. The most interesting is the testimony of the three main characters. A simple story is elaborated through the description of different people. The sexual desire for Tajomaru and the greedy of the husband are presented in both stories, whereas, in Akugawa’s adaption, we experience how the desires exactly cause the murder. In Tajomaru’s testimony, he doesn’t mention about the rape, instead he describes how he is attracted by the woman and how the woman encourages two men to start a fight to get her as wife. The single desire has filled Tajomaru up and drives him to kill the man eventually. The story used a treasure in the grove instead of exchanging a valuable sword to attract the greedy man into Tajomaru’s trap, which develops more conversations and emotion exchange among three people. In Akugawa’s adaption work, he also identifies Tajomaru, as a citizen’s rebel toward greedy and cruel governor killing people using power and money, which is no better

In each story except for the last, the teller war the murderer. As the viewer, I noticed, that the story of the first three teller are not convincing, because on their character are hard to believe that the bandit (Tajomaru) would beg the women to came with him. Base on the character of the woman, maybe she is the one who wished to with the bandit. She encourages the men to fight with one another. Base on the story of the Samurai, it’s hard to believe that he allow his wife to have another man in her life. So for me, the most accurate story is the wood cutter. He would not be able to tell the story if he is not the one who killed the Samurai. He did not tell that he killed the Samurai, but what is the purpose of telling that entire story? He did not admit that he is the murderer because maybe he wants to hide his imperfection. If we put the evidence from what I watched, that is the dagger. He stole the dagger that was used to kill the Samurai. He gets the dagger in the chest of…

Although Akutagawa’s literature depicts women as vulnerable, and to serve their husbands, on the other hand, men are depicted as being authoritative, and violent. The Heian time period has subjected Tajomaru and Takehiko to the societies roles on gender given to men. A male character displaying the gender norm of being brutal, and egocentric is when Tajomaru rapes Masago, which was an act of brutality, and was for his own personal desires. Tajomaru states, “At least I could satisfy my desire for her without taking her husband’s life” (Akutagawa 3). Here Tajomaru is saying that he has satisfied his sexual desires for Masago without having to kill her husband, as he says he had no wish to terminate Takehiko’s life at this point. The irony hidden…

The way a story is told is completely different depending on the narrator because of their point of view. An example of this incident is in the passage from Nathaniel Hawthorne¡¯s The House of the Seven Gables. The sarcastic way that the character Judge Pyncheon is revealed through the narrator is distinguished through the narrator¡¯s (not the author¡¯s) style of writing including tone, selection of detail, and syntax.…

In the story “The True Story of Ah Q”, Lu Xun wrote nine episodic chapters describing a series of adventures of Ah Q. Ah Q represented a combination of the weaknesses of the Chinese people. Using Ah Q, Lu Xun wanted to analyze certain particular “Chinese characteristics” such as gaining merely “psychological victories” through arrogance, belittling, the strong bullying the weak, foolishness, escaping from reality, and despising females, in order to deliver his message that would to reveal the “diseased” social system in China at that time. Lu Xun was dissatisfied about the current characteristics of people and the society and so he wrote this story to awaken the consciousness of his fellow countrymen and change their minds. The purpose of my essay is to demonstrate how Lu Xun and the narrator in “The True Story of Ah Q” created a list of “Chinese characteristics” and related these to the subject of awakening China and thus influencing the history and scholars of his time.…

Comics didn't interest me much until a few years ago: long Indian summers spent reading Archie digests out of utter boredom had convinced me that there wasn't much to the form. It was only when a friend introduced me to Japanese comics (or manga) three years ago that I began to realize that the synthesis of image and text could produce complex layers of meaning, which shifted from reading to reading. In Japan, manga has "spread and diversified as a dominant (almost the dominant) medium in mass culture" The huge audience for manga in Japan has allowed artists to diversify into many different types, the two primary classifications being shonen - boys' manga - and shoujo - girls' manga. Shonen manga are usually heavy on action and light on character development and romance. Shoujo manga tend to focus on relationships and characters. They are also visually different: shonen manga is generally laid out clearly in rectangular panels, whereas shoujo artists take pains to present the story in creative ways, for example, by using unusual panel shapes or configurations, or by using symbolic images to represent emotions or events.…

Japan 's dances and dramas as they are seen today contain 1300 years of continuous uninterrupted history. This prodigious feat of conservation, theatrically speaking, makes Japan an extraordinary and unique country. In all of Asia, where tradition generally is sanctified and change eschewed, Japan stands as the only country whose theatre is its entirety has never suffered an eclipse nor undergone any drastic revivification or renovation. The most traditional form of Japanese theatre is kabuki. Its origin goes back to the latter part of the 16th century and, with extensive and continuous evolution, it has now been perfected into a state of classical refinement. Though not as flourishing as it once was, the kabuki theatre retains wide popularity among the people, and is in fact drawing quite large audiences even now.…
