Integrity
Integrity is a quality we all should have, but often many people lack. It can be defined as being honest and having strong moral principles. It’s a difficult trait to possess, for it means to do the right thing, regardless of others and their thoughts and actions. It means to be honest, to be truthful. It means to be loyal to yourself and your beliefs, and not compromise your loyalty of either for another person. Your integrity grows as you mature and come to a realization on the rights and wrongs of a situation. Integrity grows as you learn the truth may cause more harm being kept than being said. Integrity grows as you learn what you want and believe in life, and you refuse to let outside voices alter them. I would like to believe I have such a noble trait as integrity. Often sympathetic, sometimes empathetic, I’m aware that my words and actions can cause harm to others. When I know the pain some words cause, I never dare to inflict that pain onto other people because I was raised to know the wrong in that. When jokes are cracked about noncomical things, such as race, sexual orientation, weight, physical features, and nonchangable characteristics, I don’t dare to laugh along. Behind that punch line is a person with emotions. When occurrences around me are harmful to others or myself, I refuse to engage myself in them. I remain locked on an opinion I know is right, even when everyone around me persuades for the wrong. Surrounded by people so unexposed to worldly issues and social issues, often the opinions of others will not match mine. Many times I have stood up against misogynistic, ignorant, or just plain rude comments and have been ridiculed or appeared poorly because I stood up to them and for my beliefs. I never abandon my opinions though, because if I don’t stand up for something morally unjust, I realize that no one else probably will.

First of all, people may ask, "What are morals, character, and integrity," but they should know that they are mainly the same thing. Character means moral or ethical strength, or as H. Jackson Browne once said, "Our character is what we do when we think no one is looking." John Wooden said that everyone should, "Be more concerned with your character than your reputation because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are." Morals are rules or habits of conduct with reference of standards of right and wrong. Socrates once said, "Moral philosophy is hard thought about right action." Paul Tillich stated that, "Morality is not a subject, it is a life put to the test in dozens of moments." Integrity is the rigid adherence to a code or standard of values. Denis Waitly said," integrity is what we do, what we say, and what we say we do." A doctor named Dr. Laura stated, "integrity effects you by either being honest or not. If you are honest, then you have integrity. People who say that they are going to do something do it." You can now see that character, morals, and integrity are very important.…

As I move into and through late adulthood, I expect to have a sense of ego integrity. Being satisfied the past decisions I have made; whether it was in the work force, the friends I've kept and made, the way I live my life, the way I have raised my children, and brushed any hardships off my shoulder makes me more likely to have a sense of integrity. The decisions I have made currently and in my virtual past to cope differently with negative experiences are, calling my life long friends, Alex and Sarah, who have always been there for me no matter what the situation was regarding; they always knew what to say. Also, keeping myself busy. For instance, going out for a walk to get some fresh air, doing yoga, and gardening; which I enjoy doing.…

I believe in integrity. Everyday you show people who you are, what you value, and what you represent. If you see something happening that you know is wrong, will you say something, or will you keep quiet? As a child, I was kind of a goody two shoes and would speak up if I saw something wasn’t right. At recess, if somebody went up the slide instead of down, or if somebody cut in the lunch line, I was that person that would say something about it. But now, being older, it’s harder to speak up for what you believe in.…
