What caused an 85 ton Sperm whale to crash into the side of the Essex, causing one of the most disastrous and tragic accidents in maritime history? Was this a calculated attack? Did it see the whaling ship as an unwanted rival in its territory? Did the crew of the Essex have anything to do with the whales' sporadic behavior? Or was this simply an unexplainable act of nature's unpredictability? On November 20, 1820 the crew of the Essex spotted an unusual sight, an extremely large bull. The men estimated it to be about eighty-five feet long and weigh approximately eighty tons. However it was not only the large sight of the whale that alarmed the men, but it was its strange behavior. "Instead of fleeing in panic, it was floating quietly on the surface of the water, puffin occasionally through its blowhole, as if it were watching them. After spouting two or three times, the whale dove then surfaced about 35 yards from the ship (81)." After diving the whale began to do the unspeakable it began to charge the Essex, "Its twenty foot-wide tail pumped up and down slowly at first, with a slight side to side waggle, it picked up speed until the water crested around its massive barrel shaped head. It was aimed at the Essex's port side (81)." Upon noticing that the whale was going to ram into the ship the captain gave the order to "pull the helm hard up" to prevent a direct hit however the order was given to late the whale it the ship, "The Essex shook as if she had struck a rock. Every man was knock off his feet …we looked at each other in perfect amazement (81)." Because a sperm whale is designed to survive a head-on impact it survived the initial blow to the ship. He then began to make another pass at the ship, "With his huge scarred head halfway out of the water and its tail beating the ocean into a white water wake more than 40 feet across the whale approached the ship at twice the original speed- at least six knots (83)." The book “Moby Dick” is a very interesting book with many interesting characters. The main character of this story is Captain Ahab. Captain Ahab is a man who is obsessed with finding the Great White Whale. I believe that the most interesting thing about Captain Ahab is how he is so obsessed with trying to find the great white whale that in my head I think that his obsession will make him insane. The reason for his obsession for finding the Great White Whale came from When Moby Dick Bit off one of his legs which left him with a prosthetic leg made out of whalebones. This is the reason for Captain Ahab's obsession…

Captain Ahab’s great white whale brings him destruction in the famous “Moby Dick”, but actual whales glide graceful and effortless through the ocean almost all of time. After the white whale in “Moby Dick”, there is perhaps no whale more well known among enthusiasts and scientists alike than Migaloo the white humpback whale. Migaloo the white humpback whale has been spotted this week off the coast of New Zealand as he makes his annual migration to warmer waters.…

Due to the small population size of North Atlantic right whales (~300 plus or minus 10%) and the low annual reproductive rate of about every five years, suggests that anthropogenic activities affecting mortality may be more prevalent for right whale population growth than for any other whale species. Ship strikes and fishing gear entanglements are considered the main factors contributing to reduced growth and recovery of the right whale population. Data collected from 1970 through 1999 indicates that the anthropogenic activities (ship strikes and gear entanglements) is responsible for at least two-thirds of the confirmed and possible mortality of non-neonate right whales. The data indicates that there were approximately 45 right whale mortalities…

“If it was a whale, it surpassed in size all those hitherto classified in science.” (the book) It could be a whale. They said that this monster came up and shot water. This makes since because a whale has a blow hole and they come up to breath. When they said that it was swimming at a high speed makes me think that it is not a whale either.…

In chapter 100, Melville writes about a story of a gam between the Pequod and the Samuel Enderby. He introduces Ahab to Captain Boomer who both quickly connect with each other, due to them both having ivory legs from a tussle with the Moby Dick. Ahab’s monomania kicks in and makes him impatient to hear about the whale from the captain. Boomer talks about how after losing his leg to the White Whale the first time, he meets him twice after but believes that “he’s best let alone” (482). Captain Boomer knows that the whale can bring great glory to him, but he realizes that it is near impossible to catch the whale and it would most likely end with his death, which is why he believes the whale is best left alone. Melville’s diction in the above quote shows that Boomer refers to the whale as a “he” instead of “it”. Melville does this to show that although the whale is a marine animal, it is much more than that. Boomer recognizes that the whale is more than he will ever be and, therefore, is able to respect and fear “him”, which provides for the reasoning that it is “blasphemous” to seek revenge upon an animal that is of a purer, higher nature. However, Ahab does believe that the whale “should” be left alone, but “he will still be hunted…What is best left alone, that accursed thing is not always what least allures. He’s all a magnet!” (482) Although taking into consideration…

The Scientific American article “Why do whales beach themselves?” published on June 1, 2009, bring the polemic and controversial reasons about the phenomenon observed in the last years when more than Fifty-five false killer whales were stranded on a South African beach over the weekend. The scientists still do not fully understand why mass stranding happen, and if we should be worried about this event. Whales are the largest marine mammals in the world — the smallest species weigh in at several tons. When whales beach themselves, they can die simply from the crushing weight of their own bodies or from overheating due to their blubber, which is needed for insulation in cold ocean waters.…

His infamous first encounter with the abominable white whale was what set his hatred in motion. The whale had taken his leg and left a void inside of him that nothing but it’s death could fill (or he so thought). As time passed the constant hatred of Moby-Dick evolved into something worse. Moby-Dick began to symbolize everything that was wrong with the world. It was the cause of every one of Ahab's problems. Just as any demagogue does, Ahab uses this as a way to gain supporters in his hunt. Beyond all logic and reason he is able to inspire his crew of whalers to abandon their normal whaling routine and hunt down and kill one specific whale out of pure burning hatred for it. “I see in him outrageous strength, with an inscrutable malice sinewing it. That inscrutable thing is chiefly what I hate; and be the white whale agent, or be the white whale principal, I will wreak that hate upon him. Talk not to me of blasphemy, man; I’d strike the sun if it insulted me."(Melville,179) Coming from the chapter “The Quarter-Deck” this quote not only touches in on Ahab’s hatred for Moby-Dick, but also the whale’s elusiveness. Seen only once by Ahab, the whale is a mysterious and ubiquitous force that will destroy anything that confronts it. It was a challenge like no one on the pequod had ever…

In the novel “Moby Dick” by Herman Melville, a story describes a character named Ishmael and his dreams of going on a whaling boat to see the world from a different view. One of the most memorable scene of this novel was the ending in which we were able to visualize Captain Ahab jump of the boat to try his best to kill the white wale know as Moby Dick. It was a very gruesome scene that portrayed Ahab jump onto Moby Dick with a harpoon, stabbing him as best he could trying to end the whales life yet in doing so became tangled in ropes of the harpoons which caused him to become stuck onto the whale as it swam off and die. The whale continued and hit the Pequod with his head causing the Pequod to sink and all the sailors to die all except for Ishmael that was left to tell us the story. Nobody knows exactly what ended up happening to Moby Dick so they all make their own assumptions such as he may have survived and maybe not, but the truth is Moby Dick survives and goes of to stop whale hunting.…

Bowhead. Once known as the common or Greenland whale, this cetacean was targeted by British whalers in the 18th and 19th centuries; William Scoresby of Whitby took 533 in his whaling career alone. The bowhead – a close relative of the right whale – is rarely seen as it confines itself to Arctic waters, using its huge head to break ice in order to breathe. It is threatened by the receding polar ice, and by the probable expansion of the oil industry.…

Imagine your swimming in the ocean, minding your own business. Then, suddenly, something sharp hits you. It enters your body and explodes. The pain is killing but it does not kill you, not yet. Again a sharp object hits you and explodes. Again and again you are hit. Your enormous body, however, does not give up that easily. It will take more than a half an hour to get unconscious. Maybe, if you are lucky, you will drown. Perhaps you will be dragged on a ship. Although you are still alive, conscious and in great agony you will be cut up in pieces, not able to make any sound to notify that you are still alive. This is what happens to hundreds of whales every year (IFAW, 2011). Therefore whale hunting is completely senseless, immoral and inhumane and it has to stop.…
