IMPLEMENTING ROLE PLAY METHOD TO DEVELOP STUDENTS’ SPEAKING SKILL IN SMPN 5 POSO

ABSTRACT

This study is conducted in a classroom setting to find out the appropriate way in implementing role play method in order to develop students’ speaking skill. Two cycles were implemented in this Classroom Action Research, consisted of planning, action, observation and reflection. Subject of this research is 20 eighth grade students at SMPN 5 Poso. The data were taken from observation, checklist, documentation and questionnaire. The data were analyzed quantitatively. The findings in cycle 1 revealed that only 54% students were able to achieve the criteria of success (categorized as good in speaking performance). In cycle 2, the findings then revealed that 85% students were able to achieve the criteria of success. So, the target of research was able to reach in cycle 2 since 85% students were able to reach good category in their speaking performance by implementing role play method. It can be concluded that the role play method is effective in developing students’ speaking skill.

INTRODUCTION
English language is very important since this language is used to communicate with people around the world. In Indonesia, English language is considered as a foreign language. Therefore, English language has been taught in education, starting from SD, SMP, SMA, and in Universities in Indonesia. The main objective of teaching English for students of SMP in Indonesia is to master the English language.
In order to reach this expectation, teachers should teach students in appropriate ways. The function of learning English in SMP is expected to develop students’ knowledge of science, technology, and culture. It is expected that they can grow up with Indonesian personality and using English to communicate with the people around the world. There are four language skills that have to be learned by students, they

    Based on the reflection form the teaching and learning process during the practicum period, the main issue focused on pupil’s lack of vocabulary. From the document analysis and observation, it has been identified that some of the pupils have problems in identifying several words with pictures. The issue has been supported by the findings from the diagnostic test that was conducted before the implementation of the intervention. The observation has also supported that the pupils with this problem were usually very passive in the classroom. Therefore, this action research is conducted to help Year 3 pupils to enhance their vocabulary with the use of role play with pictures in script. Role play is essentially learning through play. Learning through role play is important within the early primary classroom. In order to accomplish this, teacher have to equip the students with spaces, scenarios, props and the support they need to create a fun and interesting learning environment for their pupils. The research participants consisted of two boys and two girls which were chosen based on the diagnostic test result. The data were collected by instruments mainly document analysis, interview and observation. The qualitative data were analyzed descriptively based on each research participants. The findings had proven that the use of role play with pictures in script was productively able to help the research participants to enhance their vocabulary and solved the problem encountered by them. Pupils were able to relate words based on the pictures which were included in the scripts. It is the key that contributed to the success of enhancing vocabulary by using role play with pictures in script.…
