Imaginative Journeys
An imaginative journey can be defined as an extension of reality that transcends physical barriers. Through the use of abstract notions and an element of surrealism, an imaginative journey can result in distortion of the boundaries between imagination and reality. This type of journey involves readers by drawing on their imagination and can therefore result in the transformation of perceptions and attitudes, which may also stimulate a sense of enlightenment for both the characters and the responder. These characteristics are evident in the three texts I have studied, “The Tempest” by William Shakespeare, Victor Fleming’s, “The Wizard of Oz” and “Sky High” by Hannah Robert.

In “The Tempest”, William Shakespeare leads the reader into an island in a realm beyond reality, which generates obstacles and challenges that aid the characters in their self-discovery process. During their time on the island, they are encouraged to expand themselves and become more than what they think they are. This journey is especially evident within the protagonist, Prospero, as he is able to grow in many aspects of his entire being. Comparing his initial plans of retribution and punishment towards his brother Antonio, with his attitudes of reconciliation and resolution at the end of the play, it is apparent that he has undertaken a journey of self-discovery. Somewhere along the way, Prospero has arrived at a realisation, during which he comprehends that “the rarer action is in virtue, than in vengeance” (Act 5, Scene 1), meaning that it is both rare and ultimately more admirable to exonerate, than to hate one’s enemies. This sense of illumination and enlightenment is achieved through the island’s magical properties that stimulate growth within the characters, and also Prospero’s love for his daughter, Miranda, which humbled him greatly.

    Prospero is a protagonist in “The Tempest” because he has been attacked and betrayed by the people around him. Even though this puts him in a sympathetic position, he is ultimately cruel because he uses his advantages in order to get vengeance and stay in power over others. In particular, Prospero tournaments, Caliban, whom he catches trying to rape his daughter Miranda. He resorts to vengeance in Act 1, telling Caliban, “If thou neglectest or dost unwillingly what I command, I’le wrack thee with old Cramps, fill all thy bones with Aches, make thee roar, that Beasts shall tremble” (Shakespeare 1:2:21). Prospero threatens Caliban by imposing torture on him. To punish Caliban for his actions Prospero threatens to cause physical pain to Caliban by giving him painful cramps during the night. The fact that Prospero's idea of justifying the problem through torture demonstrates his standing in his sense of morality.. Prospero is wrong in the way he uses his social standing as a mean to torture others. Prospero feels a sense of authority. And this makes him like he is able to inflict suffering Caliban so that Caliban can pay for his actions towards his daughter.     The temptation to regard The Tempest as an allegory has proved irresistible to critics, although opinions differ on what it might be an allegory of, and what the principal figures might represent. In this essay I wish to discuss the character of ariel, who has received less attention than either Caliban or Prospero. If The Tempest is an allegory then each of its characters should fulfil some representative function. Prospero is generally associated with the playwright (or even, which amounts to much the same thing in some views, with God) as he controls the action on stage. Caliban is taken to represent the physical aspect of humanity, or the ‘will’, his uncivilised condition making him close to the beasts. In this view, Prospero represents intellect (in seventeenth-century terms ‘wit’, or ‘reason’). The opposition of ‘infected will’ and ‘perfected wit’ is a common trope of Protestant discourse, as in Sir Philip Sidney’s ‘Defense of Poesie’[1]. Ariel, then, (‘an airy spirit’ in the ‘Names of the Actors’) might represent a third part of the self, the soul or spirit, but at this point the allegory seems to break down, in that Ariel is clearly not Prospero’s immortal soul, or the divine part in man, as he is under the control of Prospero as intellect, and in fact performs the action of the play just as Prospero directs it.…

One will not become completely self-aware until he is able to see the world clearly. This un-blinding will only occur once the person has endured the pains associated with finding oneself.     Additionally, before reciting his spell to create the tempest, Prospero thinks influence from otherworldly forces are at play as the King’s ship makes it’s way towards Prospero’s island, and acts accordingly. In particular, he reveals to Miranda that “A most auspicious star, whose influence, if now I court not but omit, my fortunes will ever after droop”. In fact, Prospero sees the situation as ‘luck’ being on his side and how he chooses to treat the situation will affect his fate for the rest of his life.
