Human Freedom

For this assignment I have chosen to discuss the social issue of human freedom. My definition of human freedom is deciding for yourself what is right and wrong, moral and unmoral and not because or the influence of another individual.
In an article by G.C. Berkouwer, freedom is defined by being free from all restrictions, but throws no light at all on the nature of human freedom. Berkouwer goes on to explain that even though we are a free human race, we put restrains on ourselves. For example, deportation is not an act of human freedom. This means to me that only U.S. citizens have freedom. Even the U.S. conforms a certain amount of control on people. Cell phones and computers have become a tracking device to watch our every action. In another article, the definition of human freedom is said to “vary in every culture and political ideology”. It also says “they have no right to say which one these definitions are correct,” from “Freedom and the Human Being” by Fabio Fermi. I totally agree that each culture’s social freedom is very different. The U.S. has the “Declaration of Independence” to define human freedom. Further us, the human race and society, conforms how much human freedom each person deserves or earns.
Social categories that may/are affected by human freedom are Employment status, wealth, marital status, education level of adults and many others. Employment statuses are affected in numerous ways. Human freedom allows an employee to speak one’s mind, whether good or bad. This trait of freedom of speech may change the employee’s employment status either way. Some companies like a free spirit, and others just want you to be a robot and just work with no opinions against the companies’. The wealthy category is affected almost the same ways, individualism and opinionated responses may make or break your financial growth. Marital statuses may be affected in the way we are able to choose who we marry. Giving adults human freedom also pays a toll on their continued education. Since in this day in time college is a luxury, many adults have chosen to go straight to work to make a living and put school on the back burner. I believe human freedom has been the best and the worst all at the sometime. The weaker minded have a hard time taking advantage of making their own decisions based on their own individual thoughts and judgment. Also those that are determined to make the “right” decisions throughout life, make it hard for any person to learn from human error due to free will.
In Karl Marx excerpt on evolution he says, “Concerned ultimately with human freedom, reviving the ancient concept of communism, wherein human beings could fulfill the cooperative roles within society without fear of exploitation.” Believe he means we can now have no fear of losing social status for speaking our minds and doing, not what society expects, but what we need/want to do. These growths in human freedom have shocked the older generations, they are not as open to change and evolution as our generations is. In the early 1900’s woman were not expected to speak their mind on issues of any importance, that way left for the “more important Man”. Now it is considered sexist not to include at least on woman on every board of decisions. Most companies must now employ a certain percentage of women, elderly and African Americans to meet the criteria for equal rights and opportunity laws. I think women and African Americans were the two categories that have had the most noticeable change over the past hundred years. I am so proud of the growth as a human race, since I was growing up.
Though human freedom exists, Society conformity has blocked some of the freedom part. Our society has become so concerned with how others see them that they are not using the freedoms that so many before us fought to have. We seem to think that freedom just exists and don’t bother ourselves with the how and why behind human freedom. If we can take more time to appreciate what our parents and grandparents fought for, I feel me would more value the freedoms we have now. Some of them are: Freedom of speech, press and sexuality. Along with us looking back to remember, the older generations need to look forwards and loose the “old school” ways. If these two improvements for the respect of human freedom are taken care of, our society would get along better within the different classes and statuses, rather than excluding individuals due to their title, as they have for many years before us.

In conclusion, people should not live without freedom, and nothing could do without it. People who have not freedom live like slaves because they forced for thing that they want to do. People want freedom; if they have not rights, they would like a bird in a cage, so they need it for choosing what they want to do, saying their ideas, and voting. Many celebrities like Mandela, and many kurdish poets mentioned freedom for their people in many…

The idea of freedom can be seen in Collection 2 of our textbook. Freedom can be seen in the speech, “I Have A Dream” by Martin Luther King Jr, when he was speaking out to everyone about his dream to have the same rights as white men. A lack of freedom can be seen throughout the short story, “The Censors” by Luisa Valenzuela, when Juan discusses about how every letter is carefully read, which is an invasion of privacy. “Reading Lolita In Tehran” by Azar Nafisi also showed a lack of freedom, when the author discusses the lack of rights that women had to put up with.…

Understanding all 3 are imperative for understanding true freedom values (p. 3). Footnote of definition of all three It was not until the enlightenment period in response to new race slavery institution that the 3 types of freedom gained importance. However evidence suggests ancient society such Rome and Greece used slaves and through comparing oneself to the ‘other- enslaved’ allowed for the basic understanding of freedom. One always had hope of freedom either from buying it or from their owners, this was eliminated with the introduction of race science throughout the enlightenment period. It must be considered that Roman slaves, once freed were endowed with the ability to transgress between social classes with many becoming craftsmen and business operatives…

Mises asserts that freedom should become granted to all or else when it gets denied the progress of mankind may become hindered. Freedom allows man to do both good and bad within a society (Mises, 1962). Economic freedom allows individuals to decide on how to integrate themselves within a society. He postulates that without freedom in a market economy, political liberties and bills of rights become deceptive and false. Political and economic freedom must go in tandem to ensure a prosperous society. Freedom within a society ensures that the society continues to function even when its members disagree in their judgments (Mises, 1962). Freedom ensures that members within a society become interdependent. When members in a society attain economic freedom, they begin to desire such freedom in other areas of their lives. A desire for freedom in all aspects of a society brings about prosperity and…

    Man Is Condemned to Free

For me, freedom is a matter of awareness and our perception of what freedom really is. It’s true that man is condemned to be free because he has no choice in the matter of being free. But, if man is not aware of such choice then he could possibly be free. If he perceives freedom as to live in a country that’s not invaded by foreigners, and is currently experiencing such, then he could be free. For example, a child believes freedom is when his parents leave him in a playroom. When this happens, the child experiences freedom since it is what he perceived to be freedom. Although, his parents believed that the child will not have freedom to go anywhere else since they have isolated him in the playroom. But, since the child is not aware of this concept of freedom of his parents, he still experiences freedom.…

In Kant’s philosophy, as you know, the concept of freedom has given very importnat meaning. Actually Kant regard it as one of the ”ultimate ends towards which all endeavours of reason must ultimately converge”(B491). However, though the concept of freedom is so important, Kant’s explanation is unclear and seems not to be enough. the most critical reason of that vagueness comes from the unclearness of the dichotomy between “transcendental freedom” and “practical freedom”. Furthermore, the relationship is not only vague but also contradictory at a glance. He says “The denial of transcendental freedom must, therefore, involve the elimination of all…

    What Is Freedom

In What is Freedom Hannah Arendt argues that freedom is related to “the political realm” rather than “the inner domain”. Arendt points out in the opening of her essay the need to “eliminate the greatest and mist dangerous difficulty, namely, that thought itself, in its theoretical as will as its pre-theoretical form, makes freedom disappear – quite apart from the fact that it must appear strange indeed that the faculty of the will whose essential activity consists in dictate and command should be the harborer of freedom.” (Arendt 439) What’s the logic behind Arendt’s opposition to the notion that equals freedom to free will? What’s the “theoretical” and “pre-theoretical form” of thought according to Arendt? And why would she contend that thought makes freedom disappear?…

Based from the passage above, I can sense God’s challenge to exercise my freedom in accordance to His will. Though God bestowed upon me the gift of being free, He wanted me to apply what He has taught me through His words in exercising this ability in my daily dealings with other people. His message directs that I am not the only one given with such ability that is why respect to each one’s freedom should be done to establish a society living harmoniously. However, from what the world depicts today, it is very distant from what God is expecting us to do. Regarding this, He also challenges me on how I can channel to other people what He is telling me when it comes to the proper manifestation of one’s freedom.…
