Huffman Trucking Operating Systems
Huffman Trucking is a national trucking firm with offices in California, Missouri, New Jersey and Ohio. Most of the systems at all the offices are Windows based, utilizing Windows NT, Windows XP, Windows 2000 servers, Microsoft Exchange and IIS. The Missouri office utilizes a mixed windows and Macintosh environment. The mixed environment also uses a Lotus Notes rather than Microsoft exchange for email. The New Jersey office uses a thin client environment. Bar code scanners are available in the plants in California and Ohio. (University of Phoenix, 2005)
A mixed environment like that utilized by Huffman Trucking usually evolves over time. The evolution takes place as a company expands and adds needed systems due to increased demand for products or new business requirements. The overall topology is created due to necessity by not necessarily according to any plan. The results of a mixed environment are that standardization across the organization in not achieved. This can be costly since each environment requires maintenance, training, and expansion. Any new programs must be tested across all the environments. Sometimes data must be "translated" in order to be viewed by a different system in another office.
The bar code scanners are needed to scan outgoing and incoming merchandise. This system in critical to the company in keeping track of what is trucked by each client. A shared database that can be used across the different offices would be more efficient. The New Jersey office using a thin client could easily convert to a Windows based system like the Ohio, California, and Missouri offices. A centralized and unified email system would allow the company to offer access to employees "while on the road" and also schedule activities and meetings in a more efficient manner. References

A virtual company is a network of independent companies—suppliers, customers, competitors, that are joined by information technology or intranet to share expertise, labor, costs, & access to each other 's markets. Such companies are normally formed on the basis of joint venture agreement with little or no organizational chart. This fluid style reduces the impact of the agreement on the individual organizations and facilitates adding new players with new skills and resources. Such deals can be temporary and the dissolved once the business objectives are met. A virtual company is rarely associated with a brick and mortar identity of itself.…

After analysis of the Huffman Trucking companies network diagram, I have determined that this business uses several different Microsoft Windows products to meet the operational needs of its everyday functions. Windows 3.x and Windows 9.x environment which include Windows 95 and Windows 98, these were all shown on the network diagram and it also shows that Windows XP Pro is used at Huffman Trucking 's Missouri office. It is apparent that Huffman Trucking Company has chosen to use the same brand of operating system throughout their various office locations. I could easily assert that the reason for this is to maintain familiarity between the systems and assure that these numerous systems would remain compatible because they are all variations of Microsoft Windows. It is my belief that these Windows Operating systems were chosen by Huffman Trucking because they are some of the most cost effective and well known Operating Systems available on the market today.…

The context of the problem is looking at the inefficiencies that are apparent within JUNK VAN’s current virtual business model. Currently, the business runs in a very structured manner with two call center operators, one data clerk, three drivers, and three helps. The customer’s requests or jobs came in through phone and from that point information would be inputted into a custom-built MS-Works database. Onwards, information would be e-mailed to the morning and evening operators and then to the drivers. Mr. Kingo wants to maintain this virtual business and eventually move into franchising and growing. Before that can happen, he would like to have a central database and remove the manual process of e-mailing internal information.…
